“Looie” Statue

First and foremost this is awesome and Coach's speech was just the best. He is about to turn 97 in January and is still so thoughtful and eloquent. The fact that he got to see this come to fruition, even if long overdue, is beautiful. And surrounded by so many great people, former players, or SJU or Big East luminaries. It was very nice of people like Val Ackerman and Mike Breen to show up...and Ron Artest came.

So what excuse does Chris Mullin have? I thought it was so classless and offensive and disrespectful for him to not be there. All Chris ever spoke about was how much Coach meant to him, how he was a second father etc etc etc. Not only was Mullin's coaching tenure here an absolute disaster that I wish we could erase from our history, but he's doing himself no favors in the years after. Yes we separate the player and the coach and the person, this was just a really bad look on the person.

That being said, well deserved coach. I can't wait to see it in person!
I think Chris Mullin pretty much revealed himself as one of the biggest phonies out there. He loved Looie when it was convenient for him to say so. He also was going to have the keys to all the NYC high school gyms lololol. Him not being there is the ultimate showing of what a classless POS he is.

I actually wonder if because of how things turned out here with him coaching, his relationship with the school is now fractured. Then again, it's not like I can recall him showing up around the program very often prior to coming on as coach either.

When you are on the pedestal that Mullin is on with this school it's hard to do that. This boils down to basic human decency and appreciation for a man he claimed he owed his life and career to.

Are Walter Berry, Bill Wennington, etc also PiecesOS because they didn't make it either?

I just want to make sure I know who I'm supposed to hate these days.

It can get so confusing.

Bill Wennington was coming but got hurt and was unable to make the trip. Another former player did not come because he chooses not to get vaccinated. Mike Moses traveled from California to be here for Coach Carnesecca's statue unveiling and Mark's induction into the Hall of Fame.

I have no idea why Mullin was not here. However, I do know that he is the player who benefited the most from his association with St Johns and Coach Carnesecca. This is why some on here may find his absence disappointing.

The reverse is also true, though.

Anyway this is just one of those unfortunate things that happens in life.  I suspect that a day will come when Chris will regret not attending this event (assuming he was invited, etc which I do not know but I would be shocked if he wasn't).  It's sad when a snapshot in time has an outsize impact compared to the big picture.

I think we all have to consider the possibility that Chris could not attend for good reason and reached out to Louie with congratulations and regret.  I know we all sense a worse scenario is also possible, but we really don't know.  At the end of the day, it was Chris' decision not to attend and he, and he alone, has be comfortable with that.

When Chris became the head coach, we all knew his pristine legacy might take a hit.  Unfortunately, for multiple reasons, he was not at all equipped to be a coach.  We didn't know that before he was hired, but it's hard to imagine how he didn't know the job was not for him.

Chris' relationships are his business.  Personally, I will forever remember him as the best St. John's player of all time and among the worst coaches.  It's really that simple.

Maybe Chris also thought it was a recruit visit and decided not to show up like he did when he was coach :)

Would hope that it was a scheduling issue given his relationship w/both Coach C and Mark Jackson.
Getting fired didn’t seem to ever stop Brian Mahoney from attending games and other events. He looked like he really enjoyed catching up w/players.

On a more positive note, apparently, Ron Artest flew in on red eye (and he didn’t even play for Coach C) So, kudos to him. By the way, he looked great as did most of the former players.

Not quite as eloquently put, but something my father taught me as young boy, no hero worship.  Well I did make one exception, my Dad.

I wanted to and planned to attend both events, but a schedule change made it tough and I had to make a decision.  Go to my Son's Senior Day Football game and stay for the Team parent reception or bolt to try to make it to Queens.  While disappointed i didn't go, these times with my offspring are fleeting as his senior days of High School wind down.  I don't want to miss things just like I didn't for his older siblings.

And I know, I am not Chris Mullin but life happens.

Between the time Chris left SJU in 85', and the time he started coaching,
Chris rarely showed his face around here. I don't believe he even returned for the ceremony honoring the 84'-85' team. For whatever his reason(s), Chris never seemed all that connected to the school, the program and Coach C. Maybe it's just my perspective as an outsider. Maybe Panther, JSJ and others who are more connected to the program, know differently. I'm not judging him for it, I'm just saying that I'm not all that surprised that he didn't attend this event.

I will only opine on this, he did come to the 84/85 celebration and participateD in the pre-game festivities however he couldn’t stay for the game.

That's what I suspected. So then why did he feel so compelled to come back as coach?

He wanted the millions he was paid.

Only Chris knows the answer to that question 112. Some guesses: chance to do something he'd never done before, chance to once again be the hero at his alma mater, money(as Ron said), chance to come back home, something else, all of the above.

I believe (but am not 100% certain), that I saw Chris at the Garden for a gathering of his '84/'85 team in the rotunda mezannine. He was signing autographs and engaged as was his teammates.

He must have come back for the Garden putting his jersey up in the rafters. Again, also when Looie's victories jersey went up there.

Missing a big event like this can be complicated by many things. Over the years I've missed things for family reasons that I could not share with others at the time. Let's cut him some slack.

His coaching tenure was disappointing but had a few good moments here and there.

I personally think his losing his brother to a long drawn out horrific illness deeply affected him.

If Mullin could not attend in person, he should have called in or provided a video tribute.
