DR Game #3 Dominican Republic Sr National Team

I might have a different prospective on the three games.

We are set at the center position for the first time in years. Soriano had three double-doubles and was actually calling for the ball in the post. Nywie is a capable backup to give him a blow.

Stanley has impressed. Hustles his buns off and no one looks to feed him. Gets his stats on effort. A true junkyard dog.

The calls for a lineup of Joel, Stanley, Jones, Storr and Posh defeats the idea of Posh being a scorer and makes him a point
guard again. He shot over 50 pct from the three for the three games.

Jones and Storr seemed like solid contributors and King will be heard from. The rest are a mixed bag, fighting for minutes. Someone will rise and claim minutes.

I think this team is solid. The best in years. Now go out and prove it.

It’s August. We really don’t have at least half of our sets in. Haven’t been through conditioning. Still a long way to go to be pronouncing kids can’t play.

Curbelo struggled, mainly because he was trying to do too much. Trying to find the spectacular play instead of the simple one.

I trust CMA to get the best out of him.

Was good to see young guys go in and not be scared. Storr can simply do a lot of things others can not on this team.

Still like having another ball handler out there with Posh.

Bigs will play a huge role this season. I like our bigger lineup as opposed to having small ball 4.

Good to have these games so coach can get a glimpse, and for kids to see what it’s like to put the whole team together as one. Long, Long way to go.

Again, it’s still August. Football hasn’t even kicked off yet.

Our strongest lineup is clearly:
C Soriano
F Stanley
F Nywie
G Jones
G Alexander

Play big.

If you don't agree with me on this on Aug. 16, you're not only wrong and but you're a person of low moral character.
Just put the 5 biggest guys out there 🤪

Stanley gives 1000% effort and does all the little things that don't show in the box score. He clearly looks like he will be a nice rotation player this year. But imho if he is going to play starter minutes, his offensive game needs improvement.

The difference between Stanley get more playing time is if he develops a mid-range jumper. Put back are good In limited play but if he wants to stay on the floor, he needs to be at least some type of offensive threat.

Based upon the posts in this thread, I appear to be in the minority of thought, but I'm not sure that you can make wholesale conclusions about our team and individual players based upon three exhibition games against teams from the Dominican Republic in August.

Sure, it was fun to see our new team in action. I laughed out loud every time the announcer yelled "triplee". It was a great bonding experience for our kids. Having an opportunity to practice with a purpose and play some games in the summer can only help us down the road. But, before we talk about the merits (or lack thereof) of our players and predict starting lineups, etc., we need to consider the quality of our three opponents.

Don't get me wrong. I'm really glad that our team had this experience. But I thinks it's very premature to decide who should start, and who should (and shouldn't) be in the rotation just yet.

IMHO we have the offensive pieces to compete. In this game it seemed like we lost discipline at the end of the game. Im confident that CMA will instill discipline by BE games.

I am psyched about this years squad. Best we ve had in 20 years.

Only watched the first and third games for obvious reasons. A lot to work on but it was good competition. Duarte looked like a giant on the wing, NBA players are monsters.

Quick impressions of the roster:

- Posh looks like he improved his shot, showed consistency.

- Soriano was the most reliable option offensively and looks like he can handle a lot more minutes.

- Jones was aggressive but his shot was hit or miss, felt he should of took it to the basket more. Ball handling should be kept simple or it gets sloppy.

- Curbelo was not good he really struggled out there. His shooting mechanics are not good no wonder he can’t shoot. Seemed to just drive into traffic with no plan at times. Did have some nice flashes as a passer and he has good quickness but needs to develop his awareness.

- I think Mathis played fine he’s clearly a role player and not a score first type. He provides consistency on defense and he wasn’t forcing shots or anything.

- Storr looked like a freshman, he’s going to need some time. Showed some flashes of athleticism especially in transition. I think his motor was inconsistent that’s why his minutes were limited.

- Wusu looked rusty and didn’t really play much. Not really worried about it we know what he brings.

- Stanley will be the energy big his role is pretty obvious, played hard. Hit a nice mid range shot the first game.

- Pinzon looked pretty good to me despite the criticism. He got beat a few times mostly in the first half of game 1. Duarte cooked everyone who guarded him not just Pinzon. Pinzon forced him into a miss actually on one possession. His shots were rimming out but he uses his size well and got to his spots.

- King is a good fit he plays hard and has a pretty good feel on both sides for a freshman. Too bad doesn’t look like a shooter so far.

- Nyiwe is similar to Mathis, he plays hard consistently on defense/rebounding and doesn’t force shots. He’s the best option of the big guys to play the switch defense that coach likes, has good quickness.

- Traore and Keita barely played at all, probably injury insurance for this year.

I keep reading comments about Nywie being a capable backup center. But in my opinion he's not a center at all. He's still rail think and doesn't play in the post, and hangs around the 3 point line for shots. Certainly not someone you'd feel confident bodying up the opposing teams big man. Just my thoughts

Agree Nyiwe is not prototypical post man, but many teams don’t have back ups fitting that mold. If opposing teams with strong interior guys get Joel in foul trouble, we’ll have to address that by committee with Nyiwe and Omar. The latter offers enough physicality if opposition offers that challenge, but yes, both guys are really forwards.

Lastly, you could have a beefy, strong backup center, but how well would he fare in the running system employed by CMA? Just my thoughts.

Noticeably talented frontcourts this BE season:

Creighton: Kalkbrenner/King
Georgetown: Wahab/Akok/Mourning
Depaul: Ognenda/Anei
UConn: Sanogo/Clingan/Johnson

Not to mention the bigs from Syracuse, Iowa St. and Florida St..

We will need every ounce of production from Nyiwe and Stanley to help Soriano. Keita obviously isn't ready and I wouldn't mind the redshirt.

Going big with Posh/Wusu/Jones/Stanley/Soriano will impose physicality and strength from the get go.
