Johnnies Tidbits

The Creighton fans travel extremely well. They are going to be ranked very high this year. I was at the Garden the year we played them there. I believe it was Doug McDermott’s last year. There was a good crowd at the Garden. If we wind up getting ranked this season and they’re a Top 10 team, they will have to find a way to move that game to the Garden.
Creighton will be a top 10 team very possibly this year and if this game is on a Saturday at MSG it would draw in much the same way ranked Pitt v Dwight Hardy led Johnnies did imo.

Problem with the Charleston Tournament is its an ESPN run tournament and schedule is Thursday, Friday, Sunday. They don't want any Saturday programing with College Football. Anyway. Short trip for me from Charlotte and my oldest son lives down there and currently works in a nice steakhouse so hopefully he doesn't change jobs and we will have to get a group together.

I am extremely optimistic and supportive of the Anderson/Cragg leadership team, but scheduling is one component where I am often left scratching my head.

Given my druthers, I would have played Creighton and Providence at MSG and moved UConn to UBS Arena or Carnesecca. I have said it many times, playing UConn at MSG is just a bad look for our program. If am Danny Hurley, any recruit considering both SJU and UCONN is coming to that game. Gosh....please let us win that one.

Nice piece about Joel Soriano becoming a leader, and an improved player, for the coming season.

By the end of last season, we finally had a BE-caliber center. With Nywie, we might have two.

He doesn't get talked about as much as Posh, Belo, Jones, Wusu, Pinzon and Storr but he is definitely a main cog of the wheel on this team and I hope to see him improve his averages to 12 and 8 in points and rebounds this year, which I think is doable having had an adjustment year getting acclimated to the manimals in the post in the BE.

Agreed. I care more about him crashing the boards, protecting the paint, and not getting into foul trouble (by not reaching in and staying vertical). I think easy baskets could then come to him, especially as he improves in the pick and roll. There are many other players capable of scoring in double figures on this team, so if Joel doesn't that's fine by me.

A month ago I had the opportunity to officiate 2 different All-Star games at the Top 40 Long Island Girls camp at The Green Vale School here on LI run by the Alfieri brothers. Gus was not there, but his brother Ron was.

Quick Story:
Freshmen year at St. John's. Big game at the Garden against Syracuse the next day. We late for practice. It's snowing. Z got the 4 Runner. He beats a stop sign. 1 police car lights come on. But we gotta get to practice. He beats Red light, 5 police cars chasing us. We about 3 blocks away from Campus. Beat another red light and makes that left turn, the entire police precinct with guns drawn boxed us in. Through all 3 of us in ground and took us to the precinct.

We beat the Cuse the next day, story never got out. We all started the game by the way. 🥂

Zach reporting that St. John's will play in the Charleston Classic NEXT season

Field includes; Houston, Minnesota, and Dayton, among others

Also reports that Garden games THIS season will be Georgetown, Villanova, UConn and Seton Hall

It's one of the earlier MTE tournaments (played the week before Thanksgiving), so probably no Gavitt Games appearance for us, next year.

Charleston huh? Definitely sounds like a fun December destination. We've been there 3 or 4 times and always enjoy it.

Great arts scene, great history, great food, great golf. WHat more could you want. I may even travel for this one. Already reached out to my old season ticket partner.

I assume if you asked a current player who was recruited to “play in the Mecca” he would opt to play a fifth game at MSG even if against PC. The more exposure there the better and this is what was sold to kids. Moot now, but really need to raise the MSG bar within reason going forward. I have beat the dead horse enough I know.

Remind me again how much it costs SJU to play before 8K at the Garden? We must have a poster who would be willing to offset the costs. ;)

If you go in December you will miss the tournament 😳😊

LOl, I was (mis)reading the part underneath about the 2023 tourney being played in December in Charlotte. If the Charleston one is around Thanksgiving that would be problematic for me as we always have our kids visiting then.

Always the Thursday/Friday/Sunday the week before Thanksgiving.
