SJU Portal Targets

Let’s hope Kentucky is involved with some other good guards.
When have we ever beaten Kentucky for a player? And now with NIL money, yikes. If they want him bad enough, the money will be rolling and I don’t like our chances. And while there is always hope, the Pitino/MSG factor means little these days as for the right amount of NIL money, kids would play for a perennial loser in a cow pasture. 🤪

Maybe this is the one the collective spends some money on. They are not spending on players that are flawed . The coffers are full.

Was not it actually. I want to say it may have been on CBS Sports but I don't see a search function there.

The Hurley formula is very simple . Get a top 50 or lower SG , likely a McD All American . Pair him with a UCONN experienced PG , like Newton , get a 7 foot decently skilled big man and back him up with a quick Athletic kid , like Johnson , pick up a shooter from the portal , Spencer and round out with a PF type , Karraban

Put them all together and repeat Annually . Have kids on the bench ready to contribute during the reload .

We’ve never had Rick Pitino

I wish it was that simple but if that was the case, recruits would be breaking down the doors to come here. Now, win or lose, all that concerns them is how much money they will make out of the deal. Pee Wee Herman could be coaching but if the money is there, so will the recruit be.

We have the money for this type of kid. We’re not Kentucky, but we’re not poor.

By any chance, did you listen to the podcast SJUDave posted? The agent gave very specific insight into what's happening. Some of it is what you describe, but not all.

I do but the reality seems to be that the majority of the kids are going for the money which they may never make in the G league or Europe. The few that are confident they are future NBA stars may consider the coaching but more likely the visable program to showcase their talent, ie. Cooper Flagg.

Did you consider they are being prudent with the money of the collective. When they want someone enough they will get their guys.
This board is a reflection of the world. Now now now! Good things come to those who wait. It’s not a proverb but it should be!🤓

I agree. I would think if they really want a player and if it does come down to a few extra dollars they will come up with it. Unless the numbers get way out of hand to land that player.

Maybe for some and even most, but not every recruit.

A bag chaser shouldn’t be the type of kid we target. Not even purely from a character perspective, although that’s an important consideration, but also because we won’t outbid for those guys. Cliff is probably that hard lesson for the staff to learn.

But there’s enough guys who won’t prioritize money first and foremost.

You can call it copium if you want, but I do think the coach and players that fit the coach is still the most important variable in college sports. This isn’t the nba where superstars only win the day.

Yes but I’m also a believer that a bird in the hand (even an expensive one) is worth two in the bush as too many of the birds we are chasing are flying to other nests, even some big birds. 🤪👍

True , but you have to keep the other 12 players happy , or at a minimum the 8-9 that play every game. If 1 player gets a million $ and the rest of the players each get 100 thousand I can guarantee you will have an unhappy disfunctional group. It happens regularly in industry and Pitino is smart enough to understand that.

A former assistant at SJ told me the Looie formula was "get me one NBA draft pick a year and the other players will contribute".
