SJU Portal Targets

Offensively, Mitchell would be an odd fit. He's a very good player but he's exactly like Cliff in that he can't score more than 8-10 feet from the basket. Couple that with the fact that Luis' strength is slashing and getting to rim and I don't see how Mitchell + Cliff on the floor would do anything but allow teams to just clog up the paint. Mitchell and Cliff sure wouldn't be coming here to play than 25 mins per game at minimum so they'd be on the court together a ton.

Defensively, Mitchell and Cliff would be an elite rim protecting + rebounding combo. Mitchell has the size and athleticism to guard anybody on the floor pretty much. Those two plus a dog on the perimeter like Bensley Joseph could make the defense one of the best in the country.

It's a more puzzling fit if Ledlum is indeed trying to appeal for another year. Certainly can't Ledlum/Mitchell/Cliff together. Offensively, Ledlum is a far better fit next to Cliff because teams at least have to respect his outside shot. I figured with Cliff in tow they'd target a stretch 4 type to open things up a bit.

The Ledlum uncertainty makes for quite the conundrum. Do they recruit the 4 position as if he'll be back or if he'll be gone?

There's no guarantee that Ludlum would stay at St John's even if he gets the extra year
This is the Wild, Wild West. Anybody can go almost anywhere anytime they darn well please
I really hope that this nonsense can be brought under control soon
I'm not opposed to kids getting paid but the situation has become absolutely ridiculous

Agree on your main point. I believe SJU is assisted Chris L with his waiver application

One of our big weaknesses was 3 point shooting. Cliff & Dillon a bad fit imho as they are both pretty strictly inside players..
But when you think about it, our best win this year (against Creighton), was the result of a good midrange shooting game. And while of course a three point shooting team is beneficial, teams that have a solid mid range game win more games then not.

Mitchell is a NBA athlete right now, and has a super high motor. Like marillac said, if you can get him you get him.

I do share some of the offensive concerns but we would be amazing defensively and on the boards. I’d trust Rick in figuring out.
He may be an NBA athlete but as St. John's has learned from painful experience signing the best athletes doesn't always translate to success at the college level. He had a very mediocre freshman year followed by a decent sophomore year where he took virtually no threes and shot 59% from the line. To me his skills very much overlap with Zuby's and just do not think he is a good fit on a team with Cliff & Zuby. Just my opinion but we are infamous for signing great athletes who can't shoot and losing with them so color me skeptical on this one.

I'm sure people have seen Zagoria's tweet claiming Cliff won't take visits until after the NCAA tournament, as I've gotten tons of messages about it. It's not accurate. Just want you guys to remember Adam Zagoria is the same person who said Mike Anderson wasn't being fired...the next time you guys wanna cite him.

Visit is happening next week.
Zagoria has more sauces than the Olive Garden. Him and Andy Martino are the biggest clowns in NY Sports.

I’d think of him like Sir’Dominic Pointer. He really impacts the game beyond the stat sheet — he helped “shut down” (as much as one could” Knecht this past weekend.

I do agree that fit next to Cliff is curious offensively but having a defensive death lineup like that is equally great.

dk, greatly respect your opinion and I was a huge fan of Sir Dom. Only thing I will say is most felt Dom underachieved for 3 of his 4 years and had a great senior year. He was a huge intimidator that year averaging 2 and a half blocks per game and shooting 73% from the line. But he played with Harrison, Greene & Jordan all of whom could shoot the three. If we are going to go with Cliff & RJ at the three next year, I think we need a stretch 4 who can shoot the three at least a little. Just my view, I am very often wrong as my brackets would prove.

I agree with everything you said! Thankfully we have Pitino to teach Mitchell a jump shot (if he comes in the first place) and to make the roster fit.

Ledlum will be a success with anything he does in life. Remember: he played hurt. He will have a terrific career in Europe playing basketball. After that: the sky is his limit. I’m hoping for the extra year for our sake.

Dillon Mitchell has not made a 3 in his career, only taking 8. I think he knows his limitations.
