Zags: St. John's & Slice Part Ways

"One possibility is to elevate grad assistant Luca Virgilio".
Luca? Luca!!!!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!!!!!
Heck, if we are going to go with the youngest and least experienced assistants let's check the availability of Tony Lucca from the Mickey Mouse Club.
Luca????
We would be going from a Slice to a meatball!

If they decide to go musical chairs route, and dont move Ritchmond to asst then I think Dan Matic has coaching & recruiting experience for asst coach and Luca V takes Matics Operations position.....

Someone on here or JJ suggested Tim Welsh and I think that would be a perfect fit IMO. Has spent a lot of time leading programs in the area, decent bench coach, knows the Big East and led a catholic program. Think it'd be a solid fit. Obviously there are benefits to having Mitch Richmond on staff full-time, but the total lack of experience on staff would be worrisome.

Deeply disappointed to lose Slice. I thought he would be integral to the turnaround. Needed a NY guy who understood recruiting with the capability to paint a picture of what St. John's can be.

But if he's gone, he's gone. I appreciate the leap of faith he took in leaving Kentucky and wish him the best.

Onward and upward.

I want Marcus Hatten and Darryl Hill to play one on one for a spot on the staff

"Sources told The Post Rohrssen was unhappy with his role at St. John’s (he expected to have a bigger say in everything from recruiting matters to in-game strategy) and his relationship with Mullin had turned sour.

If Rohrssen does leave, special adviser Mitch Richmond is considered a heavy favorite to replace him as the third assistant coach, alongside Greg St. Jean and Matt Abdelmassih."

Btw, Moose was right when he originally said there was trouble in paradise. He took a lot of grief for that, just saying.

If and when this buyout is settled I hope ( but I highly doubt it) that some provision is put in that stops him from taking a job at area schools because he is really close with Shoes over at Rutgers and that would not be a good look for us.

I was one that thought the rumors were BS.. so my apologies to Moose. Thanks for the info back in March...
Anyway good luck to Slice... Let's get through this change quickly and focus on the upcoming season.

What do we need to buy him out for? If he wants to leave only because he's unhappy, then don't let the door hit him on the way out.

The only justifiable reason for buying him out, is something that I do not want to think about.

Have to say I was wrong and Moose called this. Very concerning as I have no idea what Mitch can do as a recruiter. Also don't like St. Jean coaching the team. The team really needs to improve this year.
Also have to wonder how close Mullin and Slice were in the past.

Don't mean this in a demeaning way, but I have no idea what Mitch brings to the table. For those in the know, is he being brought in primarily as a recruiter or strategist? Personally, I'd prefer them target an experienced X's and O's guy with head coaching experience.

That first paragraph is what I had figured. He was the Associate Head Coach but it looked more like St. Jean was filling that role while Matt seemed like the lead recruiter. Wish him well.

Welsh would be a good choice. Hatten spent a lot of time with the team while rehabbing a new injury over the past fall and Zendon has been around. Not saying they would be the choice for Assistant but a role somewhere on the staff is possible.

You buy him out because it is not working out which both parties agree. He isn't going to walk away and he is under contract so even if he does, he could be blocked from excepting any other position. That could make the situation extremely ugly and not good for either party. And if it is not working out and he stays, that is a difficult position with Chris and the rest of the staff. The dysfunction would be apparent and exploited by others.

A buyout with certain stipulations is the best way to go.
