Zach Article

Nothing new here in the article. It's what those of us that want CMA terminated have been saying all along.

Being a beat writer for a good team makes work exciting and enjoyable (see Billy Martin's Yankees).

Being a beat writer for a dysfunctional team can be fun and crazy (also see Billy Martin's Yankees).

But being a beat writer for an irrelevant, mediocre team just plain sucks (see St. John's 2005 to present)

At least someone is writing about the program. More than half our articles are AP which is pathetic for a so-called major program in the media capital of the world.

Repole isn't coming in to the fold. I honestly think even writing his name should be banned from the board.

Maybe this puts a tiniest of tiniest pressure to make a change but I doubt it. It isn't rocket science that we need the program to go in a positive direction. It comes down to dolla dolla bills y'all! Wake me when he is canned because I am exhausted of being Depaul-East.

While I am firmly behind Pitino, there are other very good candidates out there as well. In the end, just make a good hire and let’s resurrect this f*cking program because that is what we all want in the end.
Who are the other good candidates? I read the other thread and I don't see a lot of good options. Gambling on an up and comer, I don't see working out. And it would just seem like limping in once again.

When was last time sju gambled on a proven (at their level) up and comer?

I get it. I believe there is a big gap between Pitino and any of the other candidates.

There may be others outside of the ones we hear about. Who knows? Great. Now I am depressed about the coaching search again.

Do Gtown fans travel? My recollection from attending a number of games in DC was that GTown’a fan base was nearly as apathetic as ours. I don’t recall them traveling well at all. Guess we’ll see tonight.

I also don’t recall Providence’s fan base traveling particularly well, but maybe that’s changed as they’ve become more successful.
Georgetown fans don’t need to travel, there’s a ton of alumni in NYC working in finance, law. I have been to many a MSG game when the chants of Hoya Saxa drowned out everything else. Not lately, I’ll grant you.

I’m all for ripping the media. Most are hacks. Hell in some ways Zach is a hack.

But with all the ribs on Zach reading the forum. Well no shit. If you’re writing a piece you should do research. That being said Stevie Wonder can see the same things that people happen to post here. It’s not like we’re all geniuses unearthing something that nobody else can see.

I guess the proverbial patting on the back whenever Zach comes out with a hit piece is a bit much to me. I’m happy there is still a beat writer and a NY paper that ‘covers’ us.

Disclaimer I’ve never met Zach and never spoken a word to him in person or online.

I used to bump into Zach a lot when I worked for the Giants. We would chat in the locker room about St. John's and he was always willing to discuss hoops with me. Came across as a good guy IMO

He is reiterating the sentiment of the board. He is seeing the same awful strategy and execution of whatever Mike coaches the players.
I was thinking this was finally the year Saint Johns would be a formable team. I was wrong and when it went sideways Mike was unwilling to try the suggestions from his staff. His act is tried and it’s time to move on.

Zach is engaged and involved with several st john’s twitter chats. If he is listening to fans it is from over there

being totally serious I know someone ( a member here ) who saw him at a game and was standing behind him and this person swears he was reading redmen.com at one point ( this was a few years ago )

And at least for a year or two, it seemed like a good gamble right?
Clearly.

And no need to get into anything after that with Fran as it has been discussed on these forums many times. The big difference now is the money aspect is very different. The players get paid and almost all of them will go where the most dollars can be made. SJU will need a coach who can generate some level of enthusiasm needed to get people to open their wallets. And that is beyond buying tickets. A guy like Langel might be known on this board but 99.9% of New Yorkers have never heard of him and a hiring like that will not get SJU five minutes of publicity and interest.

Without players no coach can win. Without money no coach can get players. There is one coach who should be available who would immediately generate cash for the program. That's my opinion. It's also my opinion that he isn't going to be considered. I'm not looking to start that fight again over why not because it is what it is.

Of the guys the school will consider I think some are better than others. But I firmly do not think any of them will be able to get SJU out of the bottom third of the conference as I don't think they will be able to "recruit" (pay) the level of talent needed to do that. That's why if I was an actual up and comer (instead of the opposite) I wouldn't touch this job as it feels like career suicide. There is a raise involved so I'm sure somebody will take the short-term view and bite.

I do think a younger coach is a better lottery ticket for SJU at this point than another retread. So of those two bad options I prefer the younger guy.

I just don't get the criticism of Zach or his article. He is "reporting" certain facts in support of his opinion, now, concerning a coaching change to an audience that hopefully is larger and far less knowledgeable than this board. It doesn't have to be reporting breaking news or any "new" facts to be what it is--a report about the state of the team supporting, with facts concerning records, team play and dysfunction, an argument for a change at the end of the season.

Gambling when you are a consistent loser is for fools. Also the definition of insanity at this point. I think the situation will be extra challenging for a younger coach because of the internal politics and the state of the program. It is not just about being good at in game coaching or recruiting. We need a man with a plan and someone one who can effectively wade through so much BS and not be sucked into it. A more mature coach will maybe be better equipped to deal with it.
