Zach article/Our soft OOC schedule

Say for instance our OOC schedule was:
Kansas
Indiana
West Virginia
Syracuse
Iona
St. Francis
Hofstra
Wagner
St. Bonaventure
Buffalo

What do you think our record is? Are you happy with it and do you think we get into tournament with it or does it hurt us?

Id say we'd go either 7-3 or 6-4. Let's just say we were to go 7-3. Right now we're likely to go 8-2 in our first 10. So the question is whether it's serves us better to go 7-3 against tougher OOC comp, or 8-2 against weaker comp? Not sure, but I would think the former.

Regardless of OOC.... if we cant get to 11 wins in Conf play.... should we even deserve a dance ticket? not sure we do.

To get to 11 wins in Conf... we will have some very good wins. Aside from Nova playing UCLA... we will have played the Toughest opponent out of Conf.

Let's hope Coach gets his rotations set/ Coburn and Pinzon get healthy / Julian gets all his misses out in the next two games.... cause Dec 3rd can be a big night for us.

I certainly would have liked our start to be better, but we have to realize that we have 9 new players who have to learn the Coach’s system, get used to playing with one another and begin to blend it all into a well oiled machine. It takes time. Fans can be very anxious for immediate results. Patience is warranted. The Best is yet to come! Go Redmen!

I don’t think it’s even a debate. You see the way the NCAA Selection Committee handles their business. There’s no doubt that the the lesser record with the tougher schedule would be more beneficial. Especially, if it’s 8-2 with a weaker schedule or 7-3 with a much tougher schedule. You’re taking about a one game difference against a much tougher schedule.

Fair enough. What about 6-4?

The more likely scenario is we go 3-7 with that schedule.  At that point, we'd be writing about putting the balls away...and about looking for a new coach.
We have another new team with players who need time go gel.  Fantasies are cool...but at one point you need a reality check.  There's a reason why the top majors are playing weaker teams at this point in the season.

Since so many are attributing the weak OOC schedule to the new kids having to learn CMA's complex system, I wonder what the OOC schedule would have looked like if most of last year's team had returned? Obviously we'll never know the answer. Hopefully this all works itself out and we're dancing coming march, but if by some chance we're one of the first 4 out, I may have to take another sabbatical from this message board... to spare all of you from me lol.

3-7? You must not think very highly of this team.

One factor concerning our OOC schedule is that our fanbase is weak.

Assembly hall was packed to the gills, sold out for indiana vs. St John's.    If they played us, we couldnt sell half that many tickets, even at the new UBS arena which seats 17,000 plus.

If you don't think that's true, just know that sales for #3 Kansas at UBS, a spanking new arena, with easy access to parkways and a lirr stop, have been abysmal.

If you haven't bought tickets and are a fan of this program, co sider buying today.   The lower bowl has not come close to selling out, and if we are to have any sort of a future playing there, need to do better.

Buy your tickets today.   SJU putting on a massive push just so we won't be embarrassed on TV by a poor showing attendance wise.

Bought 6 last week - corner sections of the Arena still look >50% empty. Hopefully its the school that bought behind the basket and will be providing bus service for our Students in those sections.... Need to start offering a "come to a game, get free ___ meal" the following week.

Not sure how Kansas fans travel or if they are well dispersed as other fan bases.... lets just hope the crowd is >75% Red

If the Kansas game were being played at MSG, you would probably have a lot more Kansas fans coming to town for the game, and to make a weekend of it in NYC. You most certainly would have had a lot more general college basketball fans from NYC going to the game, if for no other reason then to see Kansas. Those fans are not schlepping out to UBS. No way, no how. And I doubt the additional Queens and Long Island SJU fans who are going to UBS, are going  to offset the fans who would have come if the game were played at MSG.

I won't be making the trip from NC for this one, but I will say that if I still lived in NY the LIRR option (not to mention being able to get a beer) would be a nice improvement over Carnesecca Arena (but not MSG).

No doubt the fanbase is weak. I still go back to my comment in another thread about marketing. Is the plan to just add Kansas to the schedule at UBS arena and hope people show up? To get the casual NYC based basketball fan to be interested, they have to know about the game first. Would love to see the school step up in that regard. Heck, maybe it won't even work.

But just as an example, buying Google Ad Space is a very simple and effective way to getting eyeballs. Everyone uses those. Ever notice how ads pop up based on the type of websites you visit? I don't think I've ever had a St. John's ad pop up for me, and imagine how much time I spend on St. John's and college basketball related sites.

Where you may be correct about Kansas fans helping fill MSG, Indiana fans filled Assembly Hall with ZERO tickets sold to SJU fans.

I think the argument you are making is against improvements to CA or a new on campus arena, because fans won't bother coming because it's too hard to get to.   With a new LIRR stop for the UBS arena, it is much more accessible than an on campus arena.

Another factor is that all of our top recruiting targets from the NYC area will be at the game.   A half empty arena is a good message to go somewhere else where the fans really care and support the team.

We can't hope for a better OOC schedule when we put the #3 team in the nation and historically one of the top 5 programs in college basketball and our own fans make excuses not to show up.

Good points, but I don't know what has been done to market the game.   Tickets are being sold exclusively through Ticketmastr, not through St. John's, but we no longer do marketing in house (it is outsourced).

I don’t know what it takes for the powers to be at SJU to finally accept the fact that playing outside CA the only reasonable option is MSG. When Barclay opened it took about three games to realize three thousand was a large crowd and UBS will turn out to be the same.
If SJU has a decent team a team like Kansas might draw fourteen thousand, Duke and Vill even more at MSG. Four or five big east teams can get ten thousand at MSG. This won’t happen any where else. The convenience of MSG, twelve subway stations within a few blocks and the LIRR in the building can’t be beat. There will be two trains leaving UBS after the Kansas game for about ten bucks a ride and if you miss them you are there all night.
I wish SJU would just stick with MSG.

I know you were on sabatical, so you missed my post advocating for an upgrade to CA, and continued games at MSG. Other then one or maybe 2 games a year at UBS-combined with another game with local flavor IE Hofstra vs Iona-I don't see UBS ever being a destination for fans who do not live locally and plan on driving. You really think the average college basketball fan in NYC is going to take the LIRR out to long island to catch a game? UBS will draw, more or less, the same fans who attend games at CA. Maybe minimally more. But I don't see UBS coming close to MSG in attendance and for pure marquee value.

I still think it would be better but it would depend on who those losses were against and the margins of defeat. But, assuming no losses to bad teams and no blowout losses to good teams , I still think it would be better.

I personally would have loved to go to the game, but just can't justify the amount of travel it will take. I'd actually love to check out UBS Arena, it looks awesome. But from where I live in Manhattan, google maps is showing an hour and 45 minutes each way. Ironically, as part of the route Google Maps shows, I'd have to get off the F train at the stop I'd get off for St. John's and switch there to get into Long Island.
