Xavier game

I'm more calm now. Tough loss, but the silver lining is that Jordan continues to flash his brilliance. He looked like the best player on the floor--saying a lot with Christon in there--for a few stretches and he can really drive at will. He is also relentless going after the ball and that reminds me of the types of guys we had on the 98-2000 teams. He needs to get some assists going when he draws the help D and he also needs to get his shot going--which I think will come when he gets in a scoring rhythm and gains confidence.

Xavier is legit. They are a top 15 program over the last 15 years...no doubting that. They also have a great home court advantage and it was definitely felt in the second half. Stainbrook is the most coordinated big--and I do mean big--man that I've seen in years. I felt like I was watching my uncle play me as a kid. He straight-up outmuscled Obekpa like I've never seen before. CO is usually our most sturdy option in terms of not getting backed down in the post. Stainbrook has a future with the Globetrotters for sure...or if they ever remake Teenwolf.

The thing that gets me the most upset is all the one-and-dones on offense. Sanchez and Sampson are both capable offensive rebounders and they need to be closer to the basket. Sampson could be unstoppable on the offensive glass. We're never going to be a good shooting team, so cleaning the offensive glass is a must. We need to be dominant on that end. That is what the 98-2000 teams did so well. They got a ton of easy shots all game and a lot of those were second or third chance points. They missed 54 shots and only grabbed 15 offensive rebounds--outside of Jordan, most just bounced out to us. And the lack of offensive rebounding makes it so puzzling why they got beat back down the court the entire second half whenever Jordan drove. 1 offensive rebound out of Dom in 20 minutes and that makes him just about useless.

The other thing that gets me going is how guys are not forced to play to their strengths and avoid glaring weaknesses. Let's be honest, Dom, Sanchez, and Sampson should not be handling the ball 20 feet from the basket. Ever. They should just swing it and move. After three dribbles Dom and Sampson are out of control and turnovers waiting to happen. I'd let Sanchez drive if he has space or after a shot-fake in the right matchup, but he needs to pick his battles wisely. Sampson needs to realize that he has to be a good college PF before he can be a great overall player. If they haven't already, sit him down and show him tape of Hakim Warrick. I don't think Warrick even attempted a three until his senior year and I can't remember him ever driving wildly from 20-25 feet. Warrick got the ball in the mid to high post, faced up bigger defenders, and used his elite first step and no more than two dribbles to score at will. When Samson does that, he just looks elite and if he misses the shot, it should give us a good chance to get an offensive rebound because the help D will have to leave the weak side rim. Warrick, like Sampson, was also a freak show in transition. I'll take that all day from Sampson, and they are very similar players from size, to physical talent, to skill sets.

Branch played five minutes? WTF? He had a team-leading three assists and plays solid defense. I just don't get this. Balamou only got five and crashed the offensive glass harder in those five minutes than anyone not named Jordan although he was not credited with a rebound.

This team just needs an identity. It has to include tough as nails defensive pressure and relentless offensive rebounding.

What I don't understand about CO is how he finishes w 0 points, He should be under the basket getting rebounds and put backs.

It's easy, he has no offensive skills!
you don't need much offensive skills. I'm not asking him to shoot. Just be a garbage man and grab an offensive rebound and put it in the hoop right under the basket.

Is there any difference between Lavin and Roberts?
Yeah I get it, Lavin is a great recruiter, but with all his great recruiting ht season was with Norms kids. Ok, those Roberts recruits were all seniors but I don`t see these kids as seniors next year doing what norms seniors did.
So lets go to 2015 and with no one so far for 2014:
Seniors if no one leaves early, Draft/Transfer: Sampson, Obekpa, Jones, Hooper, and Balamou.
Junior: Jordan
No Sophmores

That leaves us 6 players on scholarships, so I guess we better get atleast 4 freshmen (Lavin better get 2 freaking shooters), and there`ll be the the "oh we`re young again" bs excuse. Guess we`d have to wait until 2017 to be good right?

See that`s what it is with people on this board. Oh give Lavin time, time, time. It`s the same bs every year.
Can`t give the oh they`re young and have no depth this year. That`s why i was mellow the last two years. Can`t use that excuse this year though.

Lavin better get a clue and quick. I know the Lavin defenders will come back at me, but hey they see with their own eyes that this guys can`t coach. So let them say as they want.

Please help me understand. .. we lost a game that we were supposed to lose (5 point dogs) and we are 9-4 with about 20 games to go. You're making it seem like the season ended today. At the end of the year we best see results but why bitch about things that haven't happened yet? Smh

Why, because maybe if Lavin had a clue to wtf he`s doing then maybe we win today. So smh me all you want but lets see how he coaches at G-Town. Maybe Keady should take over and Lavin could stick to recruiting

ohhhh... that's right. .Lavin missed 70 percent of the 2 pointers we took. If they even shot 35 percent from inside the arc we win this game. Think logically is all I'm asking.

Well I posted a reply after your last post but I don`t see it, don`t know if it got deleted or it just didn`t go through. I was in a hurry to go do something.

But again. Is that his or not his recruits, he picked them no one else.
Now before anything else, the only way to bring back SJU to the levels of the 80s is to hire a big name coach, but I don`t see that happening. So I guess you gotta give Lavin another big recruiting class (that would be the 2015 class), and hope that he chooses those recruits wisely.
I`m not giving up on these guys just yet but after watching how they played today, it`s hard to believe that they could get so much better.

Guess the best thing to do for myself is just stop caring so much. If they win great, if they lose then oh well.
Not worth when they lose for it to bother me all day

I think Carnesecca should take over for a few seasons. He was our last sure fire winner, and with a younger Keady at his side, at almost 89 could coach for three or four season while Keady studies under him.

Accepting your premises, do you have confidence this staff can/will execute that plan. I am holding off on assessing staff fully until the end of season, but frankly my confidence is waning. We have had ample time to evidence some stability and consistency, but I just don't see where Lav is going with this team. Thanks.

Sorry sjuisback but I just don't agree with you. We are now in the right conference for us, have dorms, a nice campus, good tv contract, league stability and most important pay big dollars.
The SJU job has never been more attractive IMHO. We are capable of bringing in a coach that wishes to be at a basketball school first and foremost. We no longer need to settle.
Our new conference IMHO is very similar to the original BE which was only known for bball when it started irrespective of the fact that a few schools bc and cues played division 1 football.
We had good coaches , some were great , who recruited very well and got the most out of their teams.
We at SJU have the opposite today. We have the best facilities we have ever had , a coach that brings national exposure and recruits from places we never dreamed of recruiting, Detroit, Chicago , Texas , Philly, but we are under achieving. We are deep and talented and experienced. The product should be good. Every one of Gift, Harrison, Pointer, Green, Sampson, Sanchez, CO has had great games at this level. No one is trash or not a high division 1 player. They are all capable of having big games as is Ryaheed. It is incumbent upon the staff to best figure out how to maximize their talent and not a bunch of fans on an internet chat room.
They are paid handsomely to do that. I know some of you can accept that the team may jell in February but I don't.
The ingredients were all there for this team to be very good from day 1 and I don't accept any reason for this team of very high ranked and talented players to be underperforming.

If we bounce back against Georgetown (which I believe we will) I think it will lift our spirits and restore some optimism to the discussion.

I believe that 3 1/2 years is a large enough sample to evaluate Coach Lavin's performance at St John's
To me, Coach Lavin has been exactly as advertised before he arrived here
He seems to be a great guy, extremely charismatic, very good with the media, a wonderful "face" for the program and an excellent recruiter
However, his skills are less than satisfactory when it comes to the technical end of the job
Lavin is not proficient at the "x's and o's" , does not develop and coordinate talent well and is not a good bench coach
If I remember correctly, Lavin originally signed a 5 year contract
Since we are halfway through year 4, you would think that a decision about his future status would be made at the end of this season
As good a recruiter as Lavin is, it would be very hard to get high profile kids to come here if you are a lame duck coach
It will be interesting to see what happens this spring, especially if (heaven forbid), we don't make the NCAA's this year

If we bounce back against Georgetown (which I believe we will) I think it will lift our spirits and restore some optimism to the discussion.

And if we don't the Villanova game at home during break with no students will turn into a season saving or ending game arguably.

too many Xavier points in the paint guys missing defensive assignments allowing for easy baskets getting burned on back door scoring i can't for the life of me understand rolling the ball down on the floor, wasting precious time before picking it up instead of rushing the ball up the floor to score to lackadasical thinking they have all the time in the world when the clock shows under 2 minutes remaining right now this team is a long way from being ncaa considered

Rolling the ball before picking it up doesn't waste time. The clock doesn't start until a player picks it up. It saves time.

Well said. We need an identity ASAP. If we are going to play 10 guys than we should be pressing full court for 40 minutes and causing havoc like VCU and the old Arkansas teams. If we are going to play zone than there's no reason to go more than 8 deep off bench unless we are in foul trouble.

The substitution patterns and lack of a set rotation at this point in the year are robbing us of any continuity and contributing to slow starts, scoring droughts. With the Europe trip and having so many juniors there is no reason for this.

Team also needs to play smarter and more unselfishly. Too much one on one, too much dribble and passing east west. We have great athletes who need to be cutting to the basket and crashing the boards.

Xavier wanted that game more than we did yesterday. They are not more talented than us. We're going to see what this team is made of the next two games. I'd like to see some more heart and desire. We need a signature win badly!

Please believe me Moose I am not looking to nit pick but if we loose in DC and beat Nova it only means we are possibly still in the hunt as opposed to being 0-3. At this point this team must go on a 4 or 5 game winning streak soon if we are to dance. I am far from convinced that 20 wins will get us in. Nor am I convinced that we will get 20 wins.

you don't need much offensive skills. I'm not asking him to shoot. Just be a garbage man and grab an offensive rebound and put it in the hoop right under the basket.

He'd better develop some offensive skills or we'll be in big trouble next year. With Sanchez gone and no inside scoring threat coming aboard (at least not as of now), we will have zero scoring presence inside and we'll be seeing even more settling for outside shots, which is obviously not our strength.

What I don't understand about CO is how he finishes w 0 points, He should be under the basket getting rebounds and put backs.

CO is a liability out there...for all his success blocking shots he hurts the team with his lack of rebounding and zero offensive game. I would limit his minutes.

And replace him with Gift with no rebounding, offensive game and in his final year? Hmm

I would just roll with pointer, sampson and sanchez as our forwards/centers. Obekpa would get occasional minutes but right now he's hurting more than helping. His block shots are fools gold.
