Xavier game

Collectively, we are the grouchiest and whiniest MF's ever. I coached girls for 3 seasons and they took losses better than us. Xavier figured to be a tough win away, and they were. We dust ourselves off, stop with the extremes of who sucks and who should play and who shouldn't and move on to Georgetown. As soon as we win one that wasn't a gimme, we will once again proclaim that the team has turned the corner and growing and blah blah blah.

Game over. Move on.

Seriously, Otis.... Who was excited we lost to Syracuse?

Seriously, MJ .... Re-read the posts and you will see a number of posters that were excited about StJohn's play in the loss to Syracuse University.

Yes, ghetto ball.

Your definition of "ghetto ball?"

Not looking for your teammates, forcing shots up so you can be the star of the show, not putting the effort in on defense, selfish play, etc.

That's just poor play. I didn't think it related to it being "ghetto ball."
street ball would have been a better term

Street ball? What do you mean by that, damnit? :p

Real frustrating game: if we put more space between us and them in the first 10 minutes, we crush them and get the crowd out of the game. If we put out a smarter lineup to start the 2nd half, there's no way Xavier builds a double digit lead.

Our rebounding and instincts around the glass are atrocious. The guys rely on the blocked shot. Everyone jumps with Obekpa....why? No one looks ready to catch a block after it happens....why? No one boxes out, ever....why? Nobody looks ready to push up the court after a block....why? Everyone wants to block the shot, no one wants to play defense and transition if a block is made because they are not ready for it/out of position...why?

The only guy who showed me anything today was Jordan. He should be the unquestioned point guard of this team. He won't be perfect, but he'll be our biggest threat WITH THE BALL. As aggressive and as good as Harrison can be, he SOMETIMES can create his own shot (when he's pissed), but he still can't get the ball to the hoop or make a pass like Jordan.

Pointer....take a good look in the mirror and play within your parameters, because he basically (and I hate to say this) embarrassed himself today). Greene, get the ball out of his hands, and Sampson looked like a different player after he turned his ankle. I like his game but he's a bit selfish sometimes.

Right...let's just shut the fan boards down after losses and reopen them after wins.

Brutal coaching job today and this is coming from one of Lavin's biggest supporters

WTF???????????

My problem with Lavin is he is clueless as to what lineup to put in.

Balamou shouldn't have been activated
Hooper should play more
Greene should NEVER be running the offense
Pointer should not play as much as he does

I agree with all

What made us so successful in 2011 is he figured what our best lineups were and went with it. I didn't mind the lineup switches last year because I still think we were finding an identity as a young team. Its time to get the ball rolling now, he's had these guys for a while now, we should have this stuff figured out

So how many games do we win in confr? I dare to make a prediction.
But lets be honest we never had more that one outside threat. The teams we have played SEEM to have better basic basketball IQ All had better shooters Were better boxing out .staying in front of your man on D making the extra pass Knowing when and how to set picks then dish backdoors Knowing if I am 6-9 should not be 30 feet from the basket. Mentally we were beaten ..
This is a game we should not have lost. It is on the whole team and the staff Extremely disappointed

Well done Beast.
Worst they will shoot all year.
They'll be fine.
Shorten the rotation and move on.

I agree.
But in fairness though, this team is mercurial. We did look like we had improved in a number of areas in that loss to Cuse. It was disappointing to lose obviously, but their was better ball movement and the defense was better. But this team continues to take two steps forward, and then one step backward.

It's not all that complicated with this team. In nearly every game we play, we will be the poorer shooting team. If you shoot the ball poorly, then you better kill it off the glass. This team does not. Therefore, unless we get other teams out of synch, it's another in the loss column against all but the bottom feeders in the Big East. This team has good open court players. Not much else.

Use whatever adjective you want (insane comes to mind) but we are not allocating minutes in a way that maximizes the total production potential of this team.

First conference game (13 game of the season), sounds like a good time to start a 5 that probably hasn't even been on the floor together prior to this point.

Every minute spent with Phil Greene playing point guard is a wasted one. Jordan comes in the game and immediately picks up a steal, gets 2 offensive boards (plus the putbacks) and makes some things happen. Never mind the fact that he can penetrate north/south at will. Why is it that Syracuse, the #2 team in the country, can give Tyler Ennis the keys, but St. John's, who is halfway through the season and has not beaten a single quality team, can't give Jordan the keys?

It doesn't matter if that changes after today. It should never have gotten this far. We were -6 in the first five minutes of each half combined, and X started 0-11! We didn't capitalize because we are wasting time playing lineups that are far from our most optimal.

This is not just a reaction to this game, this is now a trend and it needs to get cleaned up. No point in recruiting all of this talent if you aren't going to blend it together properly (and, frankly, quite obviously).

It's not just the shooting though, it's the lack of efficient offense. Generally speaking, we don't create good opportunities, at least not as often as we should.
Plenty of teams win by getting to the foul line. Our pick and rolls are sloppy, the ball movement is slow, and besides Harrison most of the other guys aren't decisive.

The good news is that there's plenty of time to build confidence and clean things up.

The paragraph I bolded is so true I want to thank it 50 freaking times. Hand him the keys. He is that good. I hate to say it, best PG we've probably had since Cook.

How do people feel about Hooper not getting any real playing time. I understand he has one reason for being there and is horrible on defense, but allowing him some playing time might help Jordan and company to penetrate better. Lavin never puts him or Bourgout in against the zone.

Tough, disappointing loss. Congrats to Xavier on their first ever Big East Conference win. They figured us out before we could them

Sure, street ball, playground ball, whatever. Too many guys wanting to pad their stats, be on SportsCenter, etc. I'd kill to see more effective passing, dishing the ball to an open man instead of forcing to the basket.
