Xavier game

Collectively, we are the grouchiest and whiniest MF's ever. I coached girls for 3 seasons and they took losses better than us. Xavier figured to be a tough win away, and they were. We dust ourselves off, stop with the extremes of who sucks and who should play and who shouldn't and move on to Georgetown. As soon as we win one that wasn't a gimme, we will once again proclaim that the team has turned the corner and growing and blah blah blah.

Game over. Move on.

Right...let's just shut the fan boards down after losses and reopen them after wins.

I was thinking of requesting the internet be shut down after losses. Some of you crazy b*stards might be looking up instructions on how to make suicide bombs at this moment.

LOL

Emotional rollercoasters, Beast.

Panther2 hit the bull right in the caboose a few days ago.

Why is it just assumed that this is the worst the team will shoot all year? I hope that's true, but if there's no ball movement or method to what we're doing on offense - I don't know how anyone can write this off as just a bad shooting day.

Yeah, except this is supposed to be "our year", and we are not supposed to be losing games like this.

BotE, I disagree for one reason - if we played hard, smart, team ball and lost I would agree with you. But we generally played uninspired, selfish ball and that is MY reason for being so negative. There is losing and there is losing. Mix that with Lavin's mind boggling personnel decisions and this team is just very frustrating. Other than blind allegiance tell me what happened today for you to say chalk it up and move on with a degree of confidence better things are coming.

A few years ago, we beat up on Louisville at the Garden - on the evening of our heralded Final Four appearance. I sat close enough to Pitino's bench to hear him blow a gasket, loudly berate and scream at his players for stinking up the place. Everyone has their own style, but no surprise that Louisville is wearing the crown right now, and we speak glowingly of an event that occurred with Ronald Reagan in office.

A few more games like this and half the board will move to colorado for the medicinal marijuana

On a pleasant note, guys - HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR. We might not have the best team in college basketball, and may never have had that, but there is no other school and no other people I'd rather have shared my undergraduate home with. Be safe, and good health and happiness for 2014.

Lavin started the second half with no point guard on the floor and we never recovered. I don't get it. Every game he has done this against a team with any skill we have paid a high price.

Some coaches can get through to their players without being a maniac. But a few players on this team needs a swift kick in the arse. It seems like coach may not be able to get through to some of those players with his mild manner.

Nevertheless, still a long way to go.

As Dink said, things can change in an instant, but I can't see this team beating Georgetown on the road.

Perhaps Lavin should bench those particular players until they comply with Lavin's directives?

Could not watch - stuck at work - closing out the year with a BANG!

Thanks to everyone for the updates / analysis. We will get them next time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FELLOW REDMEN & WOMEN!

Lavin would have been better off starting Hooper instead of Gift. We didn't redound anyway and maybe Hooper would have buried a couple of threes in that first 8:30 minutes when Xavier didn't score and then we would have been up 13 at that point.

Hooper would never get a shot off against that defense
Hooper = Bourgault = stand still jump shooter. Can't create his own shot

Not banking on beating them on the road, either.

But if there was a game we should press.... Saturday afternoon should be it. Their guards have trouble against pressure defense.

Yes, ghetto ball.

Your definition of "ghetto ball?"

Not looking for your teammates, forcing shots up so you can be the star of the show, not putting the effort in on defense, selfish play, etc.

That's just poor play. I didn't think it related to it being "ghetto ball."
street ball would have been a better term

Sure, street ball, playground ball, whatever. Too many guys wanting to pad their stats, be on SportsCenter, etc. I'd kill to see more effective passing, dishing the ball to an open man instead of forcing to the basket.

This game was further evidence that a well coached team will generally beat a fundamentally flawed team

I just don't understand why our limited players are allowed to do whatever they want. Butler has guys that aren't well rounded, but they stick to what they do well. Sampson, Pointer, and Sanchez should not be allowed to handle the ball 20 feet from the rim. Ever.

We are one and done it seems like every possession because Sanchez and Sampson want to pretend they are guards instead of working the offensive glass. Sampson is a matchup nightmare when he gets the ball in the lost and faces up, but he would rather play on the perimeter.

Bingo!!
Somebody needs to tell Sanchez, Sampson and Pointer that they are not point guards and pull them when they try to be
That would deliver the message!!

I don't think this is about over or under reacting to the end result, being reactionary vs. being patient.

I think this is about a pervasive theme that is holding us back, in both wins and losses.

We are 13 games into the season, 2 exhibitions, and 5 games in Europe...and don't have a starting lineup, don't have a rotation.

Case in point, we beat Columbia and lost to X, but I came away with the same frustration after both games.

If this was waiting on young players to come into their own, or the group to gel, that's one thing.

The coaching staff is not playing the best players on the team. That's a concern because that's not a trait that is progressively improvable. You either do it or you don't. I cannot understand why we don't, but I hope we start as there is no reason - none - not to.

Just watched the game. What a disappointment. I try to be pretty even keel, but a terrible job by lavin. He lost us that game with his starting lineup and decide to stick with it in the second half. They couldn't hit a shot to start the same but we were playing 3-5 on our offensive end with gift and Greene out there. I can understand starting gift against the big man for Xavier, but with Jordan in the game we would have had a 15+ pt lead early. Waiting until 7 in to get Jordan in the game cost us big time. A huge blown opportunity. If we are on the bubble this will be one of the reasons why.

Someone asked where was Branch today?

Branch was keeping Felix company on the bench.

Branch tried an alley oop that went bad instead of going for the easy layup he had...that was it for him.

Problem with Branch is that he always does that.

He led the team in assists and he barely played.
