Xavier 1st Game

No dog race. Only dog race for SJU is against other bubble teams and Xavier. Which is why winning at Xavier was huge. It is vital we stay ahead of them in standings now that we finally overtook their spot

It's semantics because they have two games on us, but for the time being X is ahead of us in the standings. Both .500, but they have an extra win so if both teams lost out they'd have better record.

And if both teams won out we would have a better record. But neither scenario matters seeing as though neither are potential outcomes.

I was hoping it would catch on and the staff would take notice. Naive? Maybe. But I also was in a elevator with the staff when Norm was coach and they mentioned 5-10 posters by name including Marillac...wondering if they would be at event and making jokes. .

Did Brian Williams mention any posters by name when you and he got shot down in the helicopter in Iraq?
LOL Must have been a long elevator ride if they had time to mention 5-10 posters, either that or Marillac pressed the STOP button on the elevator. :)

I think it would be nice if the Redmen.com faithful helped Steve pack his bags.

I love these early moronic statements before the game hardly begins

We should be packing his bags for him regardless of the outcome of any single game.

With that said, the team played really nicely today. I enjoyed this win a lot, and they're not going away. I'm still not sure this team is getting an ncaa bid, but they're obviously going to keep fighting. So the next few weeks should be exciting for us as fans.
will we be happy with the final result? Eh, if I had to bet I'd say no. And we probably won't like the situation the program will be facing for next season. All reasons why the coach should be held accountable.

But in the meantime we have some very meaningful games coming up. The past two seasons I never truly felt we were on the bubble, even though technically we were at times. Right now I feel we're firmly on the bubble, and our fate rests in our own hands. Hopefully the unselfish ball movement can continue, and coach can pick the right spots to get good minutes from Branch, Amar, and Felix.

We have the best record through 25 games since the 99 team. Lavin is about to record his third 20-win season and second tournament appearance in four full years as a coach.

Or, alternatively, the #3 recruiting class, and our 3rd all-time scorer are likely to graduate without having ever played in an NCAA tournament game, or even having won a single Big East tournament game.
Alternatively, the last time Lavin made the tournament he had Dunlap and Norm's players.
So let's see how this plays out. I hope and pray that I lose our bet, but we've seen flashes from this group before. Consistency isn't exactly their (or their coach's) calling card.

It blows my mind that they have not won a single BE tournament game. To date, this has been beyond failure. Unless we dance, not sure how we bring him back. Unless we are deciding to lower expectations.

Actually, it's only three members of a seven-player #3 recruiting class (including -- not "and" -- our third all-time leading scorer), with two members of that class already in the NBA. And if Lavin's such an awful coach, how is it he was able to turn around the players he inherited from Norm and take them to the NCAA Tournament? (Oh, yeah, I forgot, it was all Dunlop's doing, the same Dunlop who coached this #3 recruiting class to a 13-19 record in Lavin's absence. No knock on Dunlop, who has a great rep; he was coaching freshmen ... but you wouldn't have cut Lavin any slack if, as a FT head coach, he had also finished at 13-19.) We all know that Steve Lavin isn't a shoe-in for the coaching HOF, and like most fans, I'm also frustrated with not getting to the NCAAs, but to portray Lavin as train wreck -- and for posters to inanely pile it on because he doesn't like to wear a tie -- is ridiculous, especially when the names on people's lips are Tim Cluess, Steve Masielo (an absolute ugh! who somehow "misremembered" he didn't graduate college), and all the other out-of-work ex-coaches who were fired from their previous gigs for failing to win. Rick Pitino isn't walking through that door, nor is Billy Donovan, nor Bill Self, but hey, it looks like Kevin Willard may be available soon.

Well this year you'll both be disappointed when they win the Big East tourney and go out as champs!

bottom line on all of the criticisms of JDR and Felix is that we need a couple more guys to give minutes. We've been puttering out at the end of games and the longer we can keep 3 more guys in the game, the fresher we'll be to close out. Amar has been giving good minutes. Felix is capable of giving good minutes. If JDR can give us 3-5 minutes/game that is a good thing. He doesn't have to be putting up a lot of production. Minimize the turnovers and maybe give us a few more fouls if we need them and that is a plus. If he can go all out and make the opponent's big man work extra hard for a few minutes, that helps. And maybe I missed it mentioned, but props to Felix (6'3" ?) for winning the opening tip against 6'10 Stainbrook.

I am so disappointed in Jones...he has talent and should be ashamed that he is riding the pine behind a freshman

Thank you very much Redken ( sorry I forgot to copy his recent eloquent post about the "anti-Lavin forces")
Easy to bitch, moan, finger the "issues/problems"
A different dynamic to create a solution! This is old news I realize and will be never ending, but we'd be worse with most (perhaps all) alternatives to Steve Lavin.
I'm disappointed with the progress, lack of BE NCAA "Ws"; I'm sure Lavin is as well but again.....we are sooo much better off than the Dark Ages preceeding this regime...there's no longer a moat around Alumni Hall; no dragons either and I'd leave it that way

Wow!
Let's go St J!
All the best!!
Stay warm!!!

Why would I ever be disappointed in the team winning post season games?
That's something I'll never understand about some posters here; why so you think not approving of the head coach means we would root for or enjoy the team any less than another fan.

Not liking the coach doesn't mean I don't attend games, or watch on tv. Not liking Lavin doesent make me scream any less when Dom has a breakaway dunk, or D'Angelo nails a 3. And it doesnt make me look forward to the Georgetown game any less.
But I think we'd be better off with a different HC. And changing head coaches doesn't mean reverting to the Norm days.

Okay then I apologize. I saw negative posts after a win and thought maybe you were unhappy that we just won the biggest game of the year meaning coach was probably not going to get fired.

Sometimes there's a fine line between rooting for yourself to be right and your team. Some people rather be right. Meaning "I told you so; Lavin sucks" is more important than St John's wins. I don't think Lavin is a great coach but I love this team and my school too much to ever root against them and be so negative after a win.

I guess I also assumed you were an Iona fan or something because you said it blows your mind that we haven't won a Big East tourney game the last 3 years.

Year 1 - team of 6 freshmen did you really think we would win in the old big east?

Year 2 - DeAngelo was suspended / Moe was not on the team yet you are talking about the # 3 ranked recruiting class. (We did win an NIT game on the road w/o DeAngelo)

Year 3 - We lost a close game to the eventual Big East champs.

While last year was a huge disappointment and failure across the board (from players to coaches) it still is not exactly mind blowing by any means that we lost to a Providence team that has proven this year that they were not a fluke. So at the very least you are over exaggerating to make a point after a great win for the program. I hope as an objective fan of St John's you can admit that.

Let's be real. Lavin took Norm's losers and turned them into a 12-6 BE team. He hired Dunlap as part of his team so if you want to give Dunlap 90% of the credit, I still give Lavin 100% for hiring him and giving him a role where we could thrive.

Now reverse it. If Norm had this year's squad, instead of being 6-6 in conference, how does 4-8 or 3-9 sound? That was Norm's benchmark.

Other than losing to Providence, the eventual BET tournament winner, in a very close game last year, which BET game did you expect us to win?
