Wisconsin game

This speaks volumes:

@jeffborzello: Wisconsin drops 86 on St. John's. Only teams they scored 85-plus on last season were SE Louisiana, Presbyterian, Samford, Nebraska-Omaha.

D'Lo 24 points... Twenty in The 2H

With all due respect, JSJ, Many of DLO'S points came after the outcome was decided.. I thought he missed a lot of shots when the game was still being contested.. And, his man D IS AWFUL.

Yet, everyone will look at his stats and say WOW.. Lots of individual stats for Sampson, Harrison but, a loss is still a loss.. Wisconsin plays like a 5 man unit. Us? Well, we don't.

Disappointing, considering everyone says we are the most talented team.. If that's the case why aren't games like this in the Win Column.

Individually very talented, collectively seriously lacking. I know its only one game, but I expected more cohesiveness on both ends.

So we go to the full court press with a minute left down 10? :side: And hey it worked a couple times! I don't get it, i really don't. Like someone said why not play to our strengths. I know we were in foul trouble most of the game, but still! Why didn't we start off with it... Our best line up is Sheed, DLo, Sampson, Pointer, Sanchez. No more of that 3 guard BS. Really disappointed.

Very little good to take out of this game; no sense of team on either end of the court. We have all the athleticism in the world; we don't have much in the way of basketball players. Still insist on playing D with our hands and lose balnace at the simplest of fakes. Still have NO shooters to space the floor.

Find me a team with less collective basketball IQ. You'd be hard pressed.

BINGO!!
We lost to a less talented but better coached and more cohesive team
Ryan gets much more out of his talent that Lavin does

I've been saying that for 2 seasons, Moose.

@Mark: Ryan generally has smarter players. But Wisconsin will throw up a few stinkers each season. They usually throw up a stinket in the NCAA Tournament.

By the way, I said before the game that we should press Wisconsin throughout most of the game. We waited too late to do such. A coaching faux pas.

Nevertheless, I think this team will be a good bunch, this year. I saw some good things. Jordan needs more time. Did anyone see his step-through on the blocks (although, he missed the shot)? He could teach our bigs that move.

The lethargy we showed early, I thought Lavin must have taken them for lunch at the all-you-can-eat buffet off Hwy 90. Giving up 86 to the normally basket-shy Badgers meant not much defense at this Pentagon.

Positives: Obekpa and Jakarr showed hustle & heart in the second half. Harrison has mellowed and had a great second half. Jordan looks very promising. Our .739 FT shooting improved over 2012 (when we shot .640, 314th out of 347 in the nation…)
We won the dunk contest. Anthony Mason Jr was at the game… sorry I am stretching here.

Negatives: once again cannot defend the 3 (they made eleven and we made two), surrendered too many backdoor open baskets / lay-ups, no set plays, no outside game, no guile / craft, silly fouls.
Sanchez needs to show more discipline. Down by double digits most of the game and we leave our outside sharpshooter on the bench? Hooper took one shot, first half.

Bottom line, once again our inability to guard the three killed us. But we have talent, it just needs to be harnessed and finessed. That is the big task ahead for this Coaching Staff.

Goodnight

If we pressed all game they would have had even more wide open 3s. Our matchup zone looked like 5 guys with shampoo in their eyes looking for a towel.

Like I said earlier, anyone thinking we were a good defensive team last year and the replay of that defense tonight might want to reconsider that evaluation. And, yes, Virginia, Wisconsin is a lot better team than San Francisco was last year..both shot our lights out from 3.

Did I hear the announcers say that Wisconsin will be the youngest team in the BIG 10?

I wish some of you would stop judging the team after one game. I wouldn't want some of y'all near me, if times got rough.

It's like some of y'all are just watching sports for the first time. Some of y'all act like an emotional people whose life were threatened. It's one game. Not the entire season.

Relax.

New rules and fouling part of that... scoring will be up this season. I will bet anyone that they will score more than 85 points against four teams this season. Takers?

btw, i'm not saying that our D wasn't bad, i'm just saying that Borzello is citing a not great comparative statistic... if Borzello had said SJU let up more wide-open than any Wisconsin opponents last year, then i would have applauded in spades.

I thought the officiating and foul calls took a lot of flow out of the game. The new rules will not suit our style... Wisconsin is a solid team. Seems like every year top teams find someone who used to be a bench warmer turn into a meaningful contributor.

Exactly. Hardest game of year. We will be fine.

You're like 'Eeyore' and have a 'Crab mentality.' Why would anyone listen to you?

Dunkins I can tell you know the game by a lot of your posts I've been quiet lately but now that the season started I will be posting a lot more.

We are too deep, too athletic to be playing zone, teams just always find ways to break our weak zone. I hope lavin learned from this game because we should be playing straight man to man the whole game. Notice in the 1st half how many 3s they hit because of that zone . In the 2 nd half they still hit some 3s but our defense overall was much better. We press the last min of the game !! We should of been doing that from the beginning of the game again we're deep enough to do so .

It is indeed one game, but it looked like just about every game they played last year.

Ugly, undisciplined, out of control.

our dreams of an undefeated season were just crushed :)

My observations -- most, if not all, of which are obvious

1) Terrible Defense & Rebounding
2) We missed just about every 50/50 ball
3) Still don't seem to have a plan of attack against a zone

Ryan gets much more out of his talent that Lavin does

Agreed. Lavin was badly outcoached tonight. He had no answer to Wisconsin's three point barrage. Our better athletes were outquicked by the slow guys. No one knows how to rebound. Lavin should be on his cellphone right now to Jayson Williams begging him to come in and teach these guys. Heck, if you don't like Williams, how about calling Dennis Rodman. I heard he's home from North Korea.

I missed the 1st half so can't comment on that and I agree with you on the defense. 2nd half I thought our rebounding was pretty good but the defense needs a lot of work. Cant be giving up 80+ points. that's just nuts
