who will be the new coach

So if CM doesn't want to coach and Danny Hurley will only agree to the 7 year 11MM offer he wanted from Rutgers, then what?

There is an extremely steep drop off in candidates. Come on all those 'in the know' tell us the leadership at STJ 'has a plan'.

Great point on Hurley.
I know first hand how he used the Rutgers job as nothing but leverage for more money at URI

But Hurley could look at the SJU job as a place where he can win and consistently make NCAA tournaments. He could grow it into what Wright has done at Villanova. The Rutgers job is a dead end. No one is winning there. They couldn't compete in the present BE, let alone the Big10.

Everyone has their favorites, but Mullin would be the only guy no one besides maybe Baldi would have a problem with. Would be a very weird time for the boards

Question? Which SJU team is the gold standard by which all others have and will be judged?

Question? Who was the star of that team?

Question? Who thought that a slow white kid from Flatbush who couldn't jump would become a three time BE player of the year?

Question? Who thought that the same slow kid who wouldn't jump would become an NBA all-star, end up in the College HOF, NBA HOF, and average double digits on the Dream Team in the Olympics?

Question? Who would have thought the same guy would become an NBA executive with two franchises over a dozen years?

Question? Who would have thought the same guy form Brooklyn who spoke with Dems and Dese would become an ESPN TV analyst?

Answer: Don't count Chris Mullin out when it comes to achieving anything related to basketball.

People tried to discount the hick from French Lick as a serious NBA executive, or this other guy from West Virginia who could rain jump shots form as far as 63 feet. Both turned into stellar talents, one of them on the bench as well.

Mullin has drive and grit, and a competitive spirit that doesn't exist in 1% of the people in this country.

Toss him the keys to the gym if he wants them. That is, if he ever gave back the set he owned back then. He deserves the chance, especially after 25 years of failures.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Beast! I like Tim Cleuss too as his assistant?

Ii just wonder how much subtle pressure Val Ackerman placed on SJU to pull the trigger on Lavin. Just recently she was quoted as being very disappointed in SJU considering its importance to the success of the BE! She may be telling the powers to be, that it is time to step it up boys!

None

Mark Jackson is the best choice, I wonder if he would even be interested

He has never coached in college or recruited! He did a horrible job in the NBA with the best talent. Alienated his staff, forced ownership to hire Brian Scalabrine and then banned him from doing his job. Then to boot he was scandalized by a hooker who shook him down and he had to go to the FBI, look at Golden State without him!

Ok, So I gather you didn't vote for him.

My all time favorite coach was ABN

Totally agree. I 'd also have to say Big East, MSG and even Fox Sports 1 are making calls to Queens to express their opinions They all will want some "star power" (read: ratings and tix sales) in NYC

Would be surprised if they weighed in.

I'd actually be surprised if they didn't. We'll likely never know, though. BTW, no one has mentioned Bobby Gonzalez or Mike Rice (that's a joke fellow board members))

Is it just me, or does it appear the pool of potential replacements is depressingly small and/or with faults?

Let's face it, we as fans will find faults in anyone. To me, it's a solid group of candidates.

- Mullin: Great PR move for the school and the fact that he hasn't coached before doesn't concern me. Both the Warriors and Kings have tried to hire him as the HC before, so you know he's been identified as a good basketball mind.
- Dan Hurley: All he's done in his life is win. Did it at St. Benedict's, did it at Wagner, now doing it at Rhode Island. He's a gym rat who is totally committed to his craft.
- Bobby Hurley: Proven track record as a player and has done a great job at Buffalo in his short coaching career. Clearly a very good basketball mind, but personally I think his brother is the safer choice.
Masiello: Not my favorite choice, but he's another gym rat. Clearly got a good basketball education under Ricky P. and has done a very good job at Manhattan. The whole degree thing doesn't really bother me.

Listen, I'd love to get a Shaka Smart or Archie Miller as much as the next guy. I just don't think either are in the cards. My guess is the job goes to Mullin because that'll create the most buzz for the school and the Big East conference. You surround him with a few good assistants as well and the situation will definitely be a good one.

Well let's just say no one would have the balls to complain too loudly for a few years.

But let's just realize that anyone on the list in this poll is a step down from what Lavin represented when they hired him. Not what Lavin became but what he represented. Newsie and I are on the same page here. Can't get the A List? (Marshall, Miller, Smart) No need to drop to the C list. There's still Prohm, Jacobson, the aforementioned Bryce Drew, heck I'm even starting to wonder about Amaker.
