Wheeler going pro?

Also thought he did terrible job with Soriano
Disagree.  Soriano has developed into a serviceable BE-caliber center for 20-24 minutes a game by year's end.  From where he started, I'd say he did a good job with him.

Disagree
Had nice touch and never gave him looks down there
Seriously we have been bad and was expected. This year was a disaster. And next year going to be much worse.

I got to appreciate Wheeler the more I saw him play.  Out of selfishness, I’d like to see him here for another year. He was often a leader on the court, interceding between our guys and an opposing player when hard fouls were committed.

Give CMA and staff credit for finding Wheeler, believing in him and more importantly, helping developing him.  I can't say enough how Wheeler, Soriano and Nywie looked like completely different players at the end of the season.

Good luck to Wheeler!

Took Anderson half the season to figure out he was our 2nd best scorer and 3 rd best player
Actually got a DNP-CD

Come on man. You watched those first games? You saw his numbers at Purdue? That hard to give him any credit?

Outside of Norm, Anderson  last season did the worst job of any coach we have had
We are not Purdue
Also thought he did terrible job with Soriano

Yea we had a coach who went 0-11 to start BE play. With the most talented guard in the conference and upperclassmen starting alongside him. So I really don’t know what you are talking about.

I don't think Soriano ever is going to be, nor should be, a focal point on offense.  I saw great strides in development on the defense and rebounding side, particularly in positioning and switching off on screens.

For the record I just don’t think Anderson is a fit here. Don’t think he is a Norm level coach.
But maybe no one fits here

This is about Wheels not the future.  I appreciated him from day one and thought he could work in our full court system.  He developed nicely.  I can remember him at first being reluctant to shoot the 3 and being encouraged by the bench to let it fly.  He showed great growth throughout the season as evidenced by having 16 double point games of which 15 were in the BE games (with 4 single digit games in BE games).  Check out his BE stats and one can say he probably produced better than expected.  While I hate to see him go, it is probably the right decision after 5 years in college/grad school.  He has shown the pros that his game has evolved and is growing, he has good size for the pro game, he is coachable, and he is a good teammate.  His statement regarding leaving was put in a classy manner.  Good luck Aaron!

Good luck to Mr. Wheeler. He could have moped after early season benchings, but stayed engaged and was ready when called upon. One lucky bounce and we could have all remembered him for the the great defense and block on Nova's last possession. Instead the ball ended up in the hands of the shooter who gets stripped by Champ. only to have the ball bounce right to another Nova player. As Kenpom said, some teams, like Nova, have the luck factor going for them.

Wheeler leaving is unfortunate for the team but in no way should be seen as bad luck for CMA.  He, like every other coach, has to reload and do so quickly. Not just with bodies, but with quality players that fit his system. Those players seem to be few and far between. Watching the intense man played by a number of team in the tournament, where nothing, including the 3 was conceded. was eye opening. Some zone here and there, but tough man combined with good communication and help defense was the path to the final 4.

WONDER IF WHEELER MISSES PURDUE RUN; THEN AGAIN THEY LOST TO PETERS...AT 24 HE'S ONLY YOUNGER THAN LOU.. TIME TO GO.. MAYBE THE STAFF  CAN GET CHARLIE MOORE.. OR MAYBE WALTER BERRY IF HE HAS ANY ELIGIBILTY..

WHEELER DOESN'T WORRY ABOUT THAT.  HE BEAT ST PETERS BY 20 AND TEXTS HIS EX-TEAMMATES EVERY DAY REMINDING THEM OF THAT.

But seriously, it's a big but not unexpected loss.  Like everyone said he's a grad and 23.  Gotta take the next step.

PS don't worry, SLYFOX is cloning berry and mullin for the 2042 season.

Anderson needs to rub the magic transfer portal and ask the genie for some serviceable players.  We’re going to need a lot.
The only thing he's been rubbing lately is me the wrong way.

It's nice to think positive but this is another bad hit for st John's. We ain't going nowhere with CMA as the coach. It's been more than 20 yrs when will this school wake up.

What does being a Grad Student mean in these days of Portal Transferring ?  Are they actually pursuing a Degree or just taking a few Courses ? I know Coburn is in a PA program that is rigorous but , what about the rest of these players ?  And , I’m not just talking about Wheeler but , all the Grad Transfers everywhere ?    Did Wheeler get his BA at Purdue or finish his degree here?           As for progress on the MULBERRY clones , Dr Fauci advises Wuhan is making great advances .    I join all Redmen fans in wishing Wheeler the best in his future , in BB and beyond .  We could have used him for all  of his eligible years .

Wheeler did indeed get his BA/BS from Purdue and was therefore listed as a Grad Student.  I assume he was taking Grad Courses and not undergrad courses in another field of study.  If he was a fifth year senior, he would be listed as a Redshirt Senior.

Good questions about grad students. I've also wondered if they need to take the GMATs and be accepted to grad school, or is that waived because they can play basketball? College basketball feeling more and more like a minor league system for the pros.

I don’t think GMATs are required as often anymore in general. When I got into my graduate program less then ten years ago I didn’t need to take them.
