Wheeler going pro?

Anderson needs to rub the magic transfer portal and ask the genie for some serviceable players.  We’re going to need a lot.
I think with CMA's system it's hard to have success with a lot of new pieces.  We seen this year, the additions weren't bad at all on paper.  I personally thought it was a significant upgrade from the previous year roster just strictly looking at the roster on paper. Stef Smith was good scorer, great 3 point shooter, on a great mid-major program with tournament experience, Wheeler came from a great Purdue program with tournament experience, Soriano was a double/double machine at Fordham, Mathis former 4-star with tournament experience, and Coburn was great shooter from a decent mid-major program.

And you look at the progress of all those guys it took Wheeler and Soriano half a season to figure it out, Took Stef Smith all season before he figured it out like the last 2 games, and Coburn never really figured it out.  Mathis was the only guy you could really say from the start kinda knew what he was doing in CMA's system and didn't look lost on defense.

It's just so much with the 40 minutes of pressing for guys to remember rotation wise to learn it and be good at it after a single off-season, and the biggest reason is it's completely new to them, nobody else in the country plays like CMA.  Bob Huggins at WVU may be the closets thing to it.  Shaka Smart use to play a version of 40 MOH, but he's scaled it back a lot.

I have more confidence in CMA's teams when he has a very quiet off-season and returns like 7 or 8 of his top 10 guys.  That means he's only having to plug-in 2 or 3 guys into the rotation.  Those are usually his best teams, even if they aren't the most highly rated guys.  Just knowing the system and making proper rotations makes a huge difference.  Right now he's at 6 of his top 10.  If he gets to the point where he's replacing half the rotation, it's going to be another rough season.

Yeah lots of good options but they need difference makers.

Can't come away with Mathis/Coburn/Stef Smith types of transfers to replace the outgoing production.

Not going to work.

Sucks short term, but staff helped Champagne get on NBA radar and Wheeler went from a guy who was going to have to use his degree next year to a guy who can make some money playing overseas. Kids with length and middling stats at other schools will take notice.

And I think Wusu or Stanley would start at PF over Nyiwe.

Those won't be our only options though. The portal will start heating up with 4-star kids instead of the 2-star parade it usually is early. Time to land someone of consequence.

Since I didn't see a goodbye Wheeler thread, I thought it was safe to read this thread.  Now I learn that the wheels are coming off. Sorry, couldn't help myself. To replace Champ and Wheeler, we need to find 2 skilled players at 6'8 or 6'9, both of whom can shoot the 3 and run the floor. The good news is that there will be 2 or 3 players in the portal to every division 1 school. That's about it for the good news.

Unfortunately there is a massive difference between bringing back your 2 & 3 leading scorers to replace your #1, and having to replace both your top 2 scorers. Worse for us, they both did more than just score. Losing Mathis doesn’t worry me. This hurts a lot. If there is any silver lining maybe it persuades Stanley to stick around.

Posh
Storr
Wusu
Stanley
Soriano

Pinzon
Nywie
King
Traore

Was hoping we wouldn’t see that starting lineup until the following year. Now we need scorers inside and out.

I don’t want to turn this in to a non-Wheeler thread but then how about adjusting the system or scaling back to something more manageable and understandable at the beginning and then building it up as the season goes along?

Good luck to Wheeler.

With the wheeler news, the starting lineup as of now:
Pg- Posh
Sg- Pinzon
Sf- Storr
Pf- Niwye
C- Soriano

Lets go!!!!!!!

Yikes!  Need more than that just to be competitive.  Not sure why people keep putting Pinzon in over Wusu.  If Mathis doesn’t return, Wusu replaces him as the tough defender but Pinzon does play a huge rule.  That being said, YIKES!!!

To quote Charles Barkley that lineup is Turrible

Without an NIT Final 4, or NCAA appearance The school can’t justify bringing back CMA for year 5.

Honestly with champ/wheelers production gone I do not see next years team being better than the season just completed.

I hope I’m wrong.

Go where? To the BE cellar?

Back when I was a kid and watched wrestling they would have “dark matches”. Matches that weren’t televised. But since this was before the internet it is not clear if these matches actually happened. So say Hulk Hogan was leaving the WWF or someone was hurt or going to rehab but they were the current champ, the WWF would have a “dark match” and lo and behold when you put on Wrestling the next Saturday you would have a new champ.

What does this have to do with St John’s?
Well in order to keep that never had a losing record thing, I think Anderson going to have to schedule a couple of “dark games”.
St John’s 100
Hogwarts 82

St John’s 97
Faber College 79

Can’t wait to read the Post the next day
St John’s rolled to win despite Harry Potter’s triple double.

St John’s was finally able to slow down power forward John Blutarsky and win going away.

Half the time they don’t send reporters anyway might be able to pull this off.

"Hudson University", often featured on Law&Order

"St Copius of Northern..." where Danny of Caddyshack was going to school.

"The University of the United States", where Akeem went to University in Coming to America. So small, they do not even have a basketball team.

Three quick Ws right there.

This is not a surprise to me and I don't think it should be to anyone else. He has already graduated, is 23 years old and just had a very good year so he can parlay that into playing professionally. Good for him.  By all accounts a nice young man and a good teammate. Best of luck to Aaron!

Give CMA and staff credit for finding Wheeler, believing in him and more importantly, helping developing him.  I can't say enough how Wheeler, Soriano and Nywie looked like completely different players at the end of the season.

Good luck to Wheeler!

Took Anderson half the season to figure out he was our 2nd best scorer and 3 rd best player
Actually got a DNP-CD

Come on man. You watched those first games? You saw his numbers at Purdue? That hard to give him any credit?

Tough loss. Considering his age and the fact that one more year at SJU wasn’t getting him to the NBA, it’s the smart move. Appreciate his year here and improvement.

Outside of Norm, Anderson  last season did the worst job of any coach we have had
We are not Purdue
Also thought he did terrible job with Soriano
