Anyone hearing which way Wheeler is leaning between one more year at SJU or going to play overseas?

Good for him. Obviously really hurts and puts the pressure on the staff to find some starter level talent. He played so well it may have cost us a year…We are!

Can't fault anybody here.

He's already 23 or 24 years old (I've heard both, FWIW).  Even overseas, the money won't be there forever.

With the wheeler news, the starting lineup as of now:
Pg- Posh
Sg- Pinzon
Sf- Storr
Pf- Niwye
C- Soriano

Lets go!!!!!!!

Geez, that's not a very strong core, with absolutely no real shooters. Better get some guys from the portal or it will be another long season.

This has been rumored, good for him and his nice year here helped him obviously. A very nice young man to boot. Staff has work cut out for them, we’ll see what they accomplish.

Wheeler is, in my opinion, a very big loss.  I agree this places extra pressure on the staff to bring in at least one impact starter.

Loved Wheeler, sorry to see him go, but happy for him. He made the most of the opportunity once it was given to him. Agree with JF that it is a very big loss.
Long way for the staff to go to field a tourney level team next year. Let's get it done!

Wheeler;

“Will forever be grateful for the opportunity Coach Anderson and his staff gave me. They believed in me, helped me grow as a person, and allowed me to get back to the player I knew I as capable of being. Looking forward to my next journey!!”

If that's the opening day starting lineup CMA won't be here too much longer.  That looks like a .500 team at best and that's if they have a super soft non-conference.

Losing Wheeler is huge, no way to sugarcoat it, now you're losing 2 of your top 3 players on 17 win team.  CMA can't keep losing multiple guys that are his top 4 or 5 players that have eligibility left every single year and expect to have a tournament team unless he plans on bringing in some top 50 players (transfer or hs) to replace them with, which we know from history they aren't really capable of doing.

Really disappointing news, staff has got to find a way to keep their guys.  If other coaches can convince Colin Gillipsie, Charlie Moore, Theo John etc., to play 30 years, the staff should be able to convince Aaron Wheeler to play another year.

I'm usually optimistic but not seeing the light at the end of this tunnel barring a major impact transfer coming here.  And I don't think Curbelo really moves the needle much.

Not new news Best of luck to him he’s almost as old as us old guys. Make the money while you can and watch your tweets while you get stalked ! He played well here

Looking at the roster now...

I think there's only 2 guaranteed starters right now in Posh and Soriano.  If Mathis returns he probably starts by default.  Wusu maybe gets a shot to start over him, but staff seems to like him coming off the bench, so I see a continued 6th man role for him.  I think Pinzon gets most of the back-up PG minutes and will play some at the 2 and 3 as well.  Nyiwe probably just backs up Soriano and they will split almost even minutes at the 5 spot.  Storr probably starts at the 3 by default, he's really the only wing on the roster at this point.

Losing both Wheeler and Champ hurts, both big skilled wing/PF.  It's going to be hard to find a 6'8 or 6'9 guy that can shoot and rotate on defense the way both of these guys did.  Not confident in Stanley or Traore being the primary guys getting minutes at the 4 spot, need to get a quality starter at this position in the portal.

Nos that’s a starting lineup that’s expecting an all frosh performance from Storr just to finish 10th instead of 11th. There’s no outside shooting, and basically minimal scoring. Sure some will improve but unless a few high impact players show up next year could be far worse. Think about this , they lose Wheeler and Champ off a team that couldn’t make a tourney? To be optimistic at this point is to be in denial.

No one surprised me more as the season went on than Wheeler. Went from a bench warmer to  our third best player seemingly overnight.

Huge loss. Not unexpected. Thought he could carry the offensive load next season. We’re much weaker without him. Not expecting much from the portal.

BTW, his departure should be its own thread.

Anderson needs to rub the magic transfer portal and ask the genie for some serviceable players.  We’re going to need a lot.

Sucks short term, but staff helped Champagne get on NBA radar and Wheeler went from a guy who was going to have to use his degree next year to a guy who can make some money playing overseas. Kids with length and middling stats at other schools will take notice.

And I think Wusu or Stanley would start at PF over Nyiwe.

Those won't be our only options though. The portal will start heating up with 4-star kids instead of the 2-star parade it usually is early. Time to land someone of consequence.
