What Won This Game For Us

the bench gave good minutes. Obekpa plays very unselfish despite some bad decisions on defense. we got jobbed a lot on the calls. Providence was practically climbing out guys without getting calls then Pointer and Obekpa get a couple of mystery calls against them - granted a couple of Obekpa's were just knucklehead fouls. It was almost as bad as the home town refs at Cameron that tried to take the game from Miami last night...
I must of woke up the guy in the room next to me as I laughed so loud for that avatar. Awesome.

The crowd got going with the inevitable run and it got scary but who thought it was going to be easy, yet the team was not flustered. I din't notice it at all. When Obeka found Green in the corner for the three after thinking about scoring himself down low, Lavin really showed his emotion. He was so into it realizing how big a shot that was, that he ran down the side line shouting. Game changing, multiple possession sequence.
Lavin was running down the sideline trying to call a TO that wasn't granted and continued shouting.

Even Stockton saw that it wasn't DLo's foul.

Question for posters older then I am, was Stockton ever a good announcer? Man did he have a bad night haha

The man is a hall of fame broadcaster so yes there was a time he was good, I'll still take him over a Mike Patrick anyday. He's also married to Leslie Visser who was the first female NFL announcer I believe

Thanks, he was tough yesterday.

He and Visser are divorced, FWIW.

Stockton was great as the voice of the NBA on CBS back in the 80s.

During Truman administration.

Yeah, he was one of the few holdouts, who didn't want to jump the gun and claim Dewey won. Stockton is still living off of that.

When our guards are shooting it well we are a much different team. The way our guards shot the ball last night was the difference. When they shoot like that their whole game improves, they step it up a notch defensively and everything starts to flow. When we don't shoot well everything begins to look very fragmented and disjointed offensively with guys trying to drive the lane and the opposing team is packing it in because we haven't been hitting our shots and then the bad shots start going up and the turnovers happen. When we shoot it well the opposition has to come out and defend which opens up the lane for Dom and Sheed to drive the lane and either shoot, kick it back out or pick up a foul and go to line. Everything just flows when our guards shoot well. I don't expect 50% from 3 every game but 40% would be ideal.

Maybe that was it. I thought he was looking for a foul call on the guy who ran out on Greene's shot, saying that he hit his hand. When I looked at the replay last night, I didn't think he was fouled.

I think when Jorden is on, it makes it harder for the other teams D. If they double team DLO Greene and Jorden are a threat to score. That's where a poised DLO w better shot selection really helps.

Jordan, as much as he can drive you crazy, is a key to a successful season. When playing under control he clearly is a prime offensive weapon to complement Dee. Glad to see him play an unselfish, under control game last night. More of that will be huge.

Jordan played with confidence last night. He should never off come off the bench again, he is not emotionally equipped for it.

He's still not a PG to me. Plays better off the ball.

Lavin taking it to Cooley in the coaching department. Not as easy for Cooley when he doesn't have a team that leads the nation in FT shooting % like last year.

Providence had 13 extra possessions but 13 less points at home. I don't Cooley is a bad coach, but it is puzzling to me how so many anit-Lavin posters are so positive about Cooley when there might not be a coach in the country more similar to Lavin.

I'm not sure I agree but, your point has merit. Cooley has won the BE tournament. That alone puts him at a higher level than Lavin in my opinion. He's built a Program at PC, that was struggling and losing under Welsh and Davis..Yes, some of his recruits have been questionable or guilty of criminal activity but, we've had our issues too. Maybe not of the criminal type under Lavin but, in the past.

He seems to find kids who are under the radar, those 3-4 star kids and get them to come to PC. Providence is not NY. Steve aims for the stars but, only gets top kids infrequently. Cooley gets kids he can develop and has. He also gets some good transfers from top tier programs, DeRossiers and Harris, from Wake FOREST AND NCSTATE. Other than Branch, STEVE hasn't gotten that level of transfer. Guys who can start and play.

Derossiers is a non-factor for a 7 footer. Harris I was very high on coming out of HS and I was hoping we could land when he decided to transfer. He has been inconsistent for them---at least according to posters on their boards. The grass is always greener, for St. John's fans.

Derosiers actually was killing us on the offensive glass in the 1st half before we got him into foul trouble. Then he had a few dunks when he came back in late but we had already won. Hate that dude. Watching the game over again, he was freaking out on the bench when providence made their run, screaming like a girl and running up and down the bench. Funny to see it knowing we ended up pulling away

IMO the team would be better off if Amir or Jones impresses the coaching staff to get more minutes instead of the three guard offense the staff seems to love. If the third guard is a competent outside shooter and must be defended it is a sound strategy.
Branch is not that player. On the defensive end the rebounding suffers and in many situations the third guard, usually Harrison ends up guarding a man three or four inches taller.
If Amir can earn more minutes and Harrison and Jordan play 32 min. a game that lineup is much better suited for Big East play.
