What if we go 1-1 in Big East Tournament

Alright, so I see a lot of responses that say no way St. John's gets an invite only going 1-1 in the BET and that they need at least 2 with a win over Nova (that's obvious - they are a lock if they beat both Providence and Nova). However, everyone that said that St. John's will NOT get an invite if they go 1-1 in the above scenario - did not say who else besides Creighton and Nova would get an invite.

A ) Georgetown. There is no way that a team that goes 9-11 in conference and 18-14 overall deserves a ticket IMO
B ) Xavier. This one I could handle as they did beat us twice, however, they haven't been tearing it up lately and are without Stainbrook. Nevermind that we end up with a better record.
C ) Providence. I don't think this one makes any sense at all, as St. John's would have beaten them 2 out of 3 ( and should have lost the 1st meeting) and we would have a better record.
D ) Only Villanova and Creighton. Really?? Only two teams from a conference this highly ranked??

Xavier is a lock. One of the other 3 getting a bid will depend on what the other bubble teams in the big 12 etc do in their tourny.

I'm in the camp that says we need 2 to get in. BUT I am very happy how the draw came out. I think we match up well against Providence as opposed to Xavier. I also think Nova in the 2nd round is probably a little better than having the Jays.

The one thing I am worried about is Nova getting fired up about getting a Number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, which if they win the BET and they don't get a number 1 seed it would be a crime.

No way we get in at 1-1. There's just too many other bubble teams with opportunities to pad their resumes.

But, this team doesn't have to travel this week, and will be playing on their home floor. That counts for something. So, let's not go 1-1, and it'll be less of an issue.

Frankly, if they go 1-1, I don't think they should be in the tournament.

Only getting three in the new conference's first season is a dangerous precedent.

Look @ %'s, not numbers.
If the BE gets 3, that's 30% , 4 is 40%.
If the ACC gets 5, that's 1/3.
Feel better?

Big East gets 4 teams in.

We can get in with a 1-1 in BE Tourny, if we get lucky.

We don’t have to win the Tourny to get in.

Providence is a good team, well coached, but we can definitely beat them.

Villanova is a good team, well coached, but beating us three times in one season is hard.

We can definitely beat Creighton, but I really like McDermott.

Concentrate on the Friars, survive and advance. We, pretty much, had to do this since we approached the DePaul game, they have all been single elimination games.

I'll never feel good about 30 percent. In a 10-team conference, we need four every single year minimum, five in a very good year.

We ned a conference vs. conference challenge every year to put give our bubblers an edge over their bubblers (assuming we win, of course).

Right now we're in Lundardi's Last Four Out. A win over Providence means he'd probably put is in his Last Four In. A win over Nova then I think makes us a lock, even if we lost a close game to Creighton in the final.

Wow looks like 90% of us were wrong. From Lunardi: "Big East tournament: Conveniently, St. John's and Providence square off in a Thursday afternoon quarterfinal (with the winner likely facing Villanova). The loser is out of the NCAA picture and we'll most likely see the winner at the First Four in Dayton, Ohio."

I dont know about you guys but that makes me feel good.

With all due respect to Lunardi, the winner will bypass Dayton.

I just read the same thing, and was about to post it. Pretty interesting.

Nevertheless, I still would like 2 wins for good measure. 3 wins would certainly suffice. :ngrin:

I know that there was some disagreement with my television markets theory on our chances...but think about it. Would TBS (I think that they have the first 4 games) rather have Colonial champion vs SWAC champion or NEC champion in a first 4 game...or St. John's vs SWAC/NEC champ?
TBS is praying for the opportunity to get St John's into a first 4 game to give it some juice (and potential viewership)...

????

St John's would play a fellow bubble team, like an Arkansas/Minnesota/St Joes

Based on what Lunardi is saying, maybe we do get in with only one more win. But, then we play in the first four. If we can win two, we bypass that. We still need two wins.

Yeah there is so much that can happen that will derail his comment. For instance we still need Gonzaga or BYU to win the WCC which isnt a guarantee. Also need to avoid any crummy teams running the table this week like Georgia a few years back.

Simple as this: we win, we dance like a 50 year old woman after three drinks at a wedding. Capiche?

Yes. But we will be dancing in Dayton Ohio in the First Four.

I'll take that versus being on the outside looking in.

Not saying, we'll do the same thing, but VCU went all the way to the Final Four a few years ago starting in Dayton. Dayton is still the NCAA Tournament. Just an extra game. Similar, to a wild-card game in the NFL playoffs.
