What if we go 1-1 in Big East Tournament

So the interesting question:

Do we root for Nova on Thursday to set us up for a potential signature win on Friday OR do we hope Nova loses (unlikely) to make our path to winning the BET (and automatic bid) easier?

I'm rooting for the easier path. I want 'Nova to go down.

Than the question may become do we get a bid if we win 2 in the BE tourney , but no real signature win(NOVA) .

I think we get in with 2 more wins, regardless of opponent. We all know what 3 more wins gets us.

We need to be concerned that some low standing team doesnt run the tournament and wins it all. Then they have to get a bid and we could wind up the odd team out. I think it is better that Creighton and Nova win until one of them needs to play us. btw I think a sleeper team in this tourney is Butler. Didnt they lose 6 games that went to overtime? They arent as bad as their record would make you think

If Nova loses, it sets us up for a potentially bad loss. But I agree, if we can face a weaker opponent and go deeper , it is preferable. Then again, we don't want an upset winner in the BET because that will take away a bid.

In short, I don't know which is better.

We have to worry about a sleeper team in any tourney. Any tourney championship for a team on or outside the bubble hurts us, unless we win the BE tourney. Right now we have to concentrate on Providence and not worry about the next game. One game at a time.

Butler a "sleeper team?" LOL

Yeah, they are so asleep that they're comatose.

Team and staff should focus on Providence. Fans can look ahead, as we're not playing. ;)

If everything rests with us beating Jays at MSG, I love it.

I think the Providence game will be our toughest game believe it or not. I think if we beat Providence we will win the Big East Tournament. I feel this way because I don't think Villanova beats us three times this year. We played them close the first game when we really weren't playing well, the second game we had Obepka out. If Villanova loses their first BET game I can't us losing to one of the lower seeded teams at MSG with all that's on the line. If anything this team showed a certain resilience against Marquette and I think going forward they get better. So, that takes them to the championship game at MSG, they've already beaten Creighton at MSG and should have beaten them twice if it wasn't for a bad charging call on Jordan in Omaha. If Creighton loses and it's Xavier, again, I don't see us losing three times in a season to Xavier. Especially after we lost to them at MSG due to all the personal issues that the team was going through at the time. This team will be chomping at the bit for that match up. Plus, if we make it to the championship game the Garden will be packed with SJU fans and the local media will be all over it so it will bring people out to the Garden. I can't see us losing in that situation. Providence is the game that scares me most.

Most would say we need 2 wins in the BET, but what do you think would happen in the following, very possible, scenario.

- St. John's beats Providence and loses to Villanova
- Georgetown beats DePaul and loses to Creighton
- Marquette beats Xavier and loses to Creighton

If the above plays out, we would have our two locks: Villanova and Creighton

I have to think more than two BE schools get in with our conference ranking. Here are the how the "bubble teams" look after the above scenario:

St. John's 11-9, 21-12
Xavier 10-9, 20-12
Providence 10-9, 20-12
Georgetown 9-11, 18-14

I'll leave the RPI and BPI stuff to the computers, but how do the Redmen get left out here?

without reading any other post, I`ll say.
1-1 is NIT bound, we need two more wins.

My biggest concern with them is fact that Greene cannot guard any of their starters...Fortune concerns me...presents a size challenge to Jordan and the type of 3 point shooter that Greene/Dlo will lose sight of

Advantage is depth for us

Against Butler/SHU? ok gl with that.

Bottom line, if the kids want to go dancing then they need 2 wins.
Doesn`t who it`s against, just some how get it done.

1-1? we have no shot imo. we have one quality win.

A victory over nova, or two wins in general, is a must.

Big East Tourney question- not sure if im seeing this correctly, but will the winner of seton hall/butler in the 7pm game have to play at noon the next day? thats a tough turn-around...

It wouldn`t be to bad if it`s a blowout and the starters rest alot in the 2nd half.

Basically, how I view it, as well.

St.John's is 1 win and 7 losses this season against to 50 programs. Not good.

St.John's is 0 - 2 against Xavier this season. Not good.

St.John's is 1 win and 12 losses against Villanova in the last 13 meetings between the two teams. Not good.

What does that have to do with anything???

It's scares the crap out of me that in pressure situations we revert to one on one offense, and ball movement effectively dies.
I think our team will be ready for the game(s) at MSG, and we definitely shoot better on MSG rims than anywhere else. But, in a close game I think we're prone to tightening up and don't try to execute the offense. That doesn't bode well for ripping off 2 or 3 in a row in the tournament, when all games will be close.
