What’s gone wrong with Shamorie?

i cant wait until shamorie has 32 points tomorrow and ends this injury speculation
Wouldn't end it from me. It would just mean he's getting better. Many times in this game (and other sports), guys have struggled through pain/minor injury, and looked really helpless at times, only to seemingly turn it up out of nowhere, once time starts healing the injury. Many guys have done this without missing games. That does not mean there automatically is something else going on.

Again, most of you are missing my point. We should be hoping that it is a physical issue (a minor injury, not something major), because that would explain a lot of what has been going on here.

I obviously concur with you, that I hope that Ponds has a big game tomorrow.
he's not hurt
You know this from being around the team?

Not calling you a liar, just wondering if you're guessing, or not.

Because questioning a guys mental state without any knowledge (which some on here are doing, though not necessarily you Jack - it's just many more posters are doing it, then the number of posters we have that are truly connected to the program) is character assassinaton, IMO. It's something I don't like, in sports, life, or just in general. Even if it turns out to be accurate, I don't like people from the outside doing it (it's why you have to take a lot of posts on here with a grain of salt - took me a long time to learn that).

FTR Jack, I've read your posts on here many times. You are a great supporter of the program.

Im not exactly some insider with a ton of inside knowledge of the team. But I do know a couple of people who would know if he was getting treated for an injury. Unless he is hiding the injury from everyone including the team, it sounds like he is fine.

Again sounds like he has just had a tough couple of outings and I think he will play well against Seton Hall. He had a few stretches in Big East last season where he struggled. This is no different.

Oh, I guess I haven't been too clear. The last sentence of your first paragraph is not only possible, but likely, IMO. Athletes hide injuries all the time. The one I always go back to is David Wells in the 2003 World Series. He told the Yankees he was fine for 3 or 4 days (even though the Yankees had concerns), then had to come out of game 5 after just 1 inning, because he couldn't move. Afterwards, he admitted that he had been injured late in his game 1 start.

That's just one example, of many. It's totally plausible that that's what Ponds is doing here.

But even if it's not, I just don't like the shots from afar at his mental toughness (not by you Jack, but posters on here have been doing that). You're young, so I'll give you the name of JR Richard. Many people said he was not tough for complaining about numbness, a "Dead Arm", and visual problems. His career ended when he suffered a stroke just a few weeks later (of which, the stuff he was "complaining" about before, were likely symptoms of).

When you say questioning his mental state you make it sound pretty villainous. Personally I said between the ears meaning it's not an injury and in his head. The struggles are getting to him and snowballing. Or who knows if there is something else going on in his head. If you interpreted that as questioning his mental state then I'm sorry but your read is wayyyyy off

It's also the kind of thing that the Bob Knight's of the world use for "motivation", and I despise that. I would think, after watching him for 2 and a half years, we would know that to be BS by now. So, unless proven otherwise (which is very tough to do), I will give Shamorie the benefit of the dobut, and believe that it is a physical issue.

Huh?
Baseball players go into massive slumps. Hall of Famers do.
Golfers develop the shanks or yips
Hockey players can take an absurd amount of shots and not score.

It's a slump. He went from being a heavy POY consideration to a shell of his former self in a month.

I find it ironic you are quick to say it's injury but make the mental comment much bigger than it truly is. But that's all I'll say on it. We're on two different tracks here. We all want him out of this funk. That were on the same track

Four more very big games to go in Big East season. Let's see what happens. We all hope Shamorie & Marvin can get out of their slump/funk of the past few games starting Saturday night. My feeling is a good game tomorrow night will have a snowball effect (for once).

Well, you're right about the last part, no question. If he starts playing better, then it really does not matter too much what it was.

The thing is, in basketball, when stars have "bad" games, or bad stretches, it's usually the efficiency that suffers, while the point total remains somewhat close to average (this is especially true of high volume scorers like Ponds). The first Providence game would be an example of that. He played lousy for the most part, but still got 20 points. That's been true of most of his poorer games in the past.

Bad game at Duke, but they are one of the best teams of the one and done era, when healthy. He followed that up with a 28-point masterpiece at Marquette, then the first Providence game, where he still got his points. He deferred a lot to Heron and Clark in the Butler game (too much so at times, IMO), because those guys were on. It was on the last shot of regulation (on which he took a hard foul) when he started grabbing his left elbow (he's lefty, as you know). Since then, two really, really bad performances, where he is not even putting up points. I have to believe there is a link between the end of the Butler game, and his last two performances, because it just makes too much sense.

Now, it's possible that he's reluctant to make certain moves on drives that he normally would, for fear of injuring the shoulder again. I can certainly get behind that line of thinking. He may also be feeling some actual discomfort/pain when he tries to drive to his left, but some on here are making it seem like he was never hurt, or in pain. That's the line of thinking that I can't get behind.

Shamorie Ponds today did say his knees are bothering him, but wouldn't use it as an excuse. He's been practicing fully. #sjubb

I, like most guys on here, have seen every game Ponds has played at SJU. He's been a treat to watch and cheer for and I hope he returns for his senior year. Lately he looks tired and a bit slower than usual. We need him to score down the stretch.

The mental part of any game is always the most critical and, unfortunately, the most fleeting. When you go from executing without any thought of mechanics, the defender, the crowd etc. to seeing/feeling the “noise” it’ll make even the best player average. And, let’s not forget the pressure that comes along with his professional aspirations. Feeling like you have to make every shot can lead to those mental issues.

He’s a warrior. He will clear his head and get back in track.

So while we're all speculating, here goes. It's no secret he wants to get to the NBA to get his family out of the projects. Imagine that type of pressure to perform? I don't think most of us can even imagine.
I’m actually in this scenario so I understand the pressure with wanting to help your parents get out the hood. If that’s weighing on him then I understand because it is stressful.

St. John’s is finished if Shamorie Ponds can’t get back to his best

https://nypost.com/2019/02/22/st-jo...ck-to-his-best/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
. This article tells me 2 things . Mullin says , “ he’s not getting enough lift on his jump shots.” Ponds says, “ my knees are hurting but, that’s not a excuse.” My take is he is injured and despite his saying otherwise , he’s not 100 percent . He’s hurting enough to affect his game , which was quickness , skill and being fearless . I think he’s playing with multiple injuries . His arm and his knees . He hurt the Arm in the Butler game and the knees , maybe just the pounding he takes going to the hoop . He gets fouled a lot more than he gets the call for . His free throws are down in both number attempted and made . He’s usually a mid to high 80’s from the line and he’s dropped off a bit . He’s a gamer though but, as we know the Team needs him st 100 percent and not anything less .

Liked this from the article: Ponds noticed he’s not getting the same lift on his jump shot, and Mullin has stressed the need for him to play with more pace and get defenders on their heels.

Fully expect we'll see a different, more aggressive Shamorie than the one we've seen the last few games. Breakout night and a win I'm betting.

Good test for Shamorie today facing solid on ball defender, Quincy McKnight.

Everyone was quick to say it was injury. Clearly it wasn't. It was those obnoxious yellow shoes
