We Should Play Cuse at Carnesecca Arena

Speaking of a throwback game, how about Ga. Tech playing at Rose Hill tonight. Why they would come up from Ga. to play a game in the Bronx before a couple of thousand people is beyond me.

How are they NY's team?

They're from NY, they're wildly successful, and they draw more fans on average than the Knicks. If not them, who.

Yeah, I don't like Syracuse at all, however they are from New York...they never have claimed to be "New York City's Team"....and not for anything, who really cares what they think up there in Canada?? :p

Well for one I certainly do as does Firestorm. :p

For recruiting purposes JSJ. Under Bobby Cremins they got many a standout player from NYC.

Understand the BC reference, but it's not every day an ACC team plays at the Rose Hill Gym.

As you know Bobby hasn't coached at Ga. Tech for many a year and I don't recall Hewitt (who was from Long Island, I believe) getting to many NYC area standouts while he was there.

Are there any outstanding NYC area high school player's even looking at Ga. Tech today ?

Cuse, Pitt and WV should all be scheduled at CA ONLY like all irrevelent non conference opponents!!
They are leaving The Big East, and as such are dead to me!
Let's grow a set and send a message.

yea lets lose a ton of money, piss off MSG, and try to convince ESPN to bring cameras to carnasecca. but i guess we can make up the money with the games in the the next few years against boise state, houston and the university of central marathon oil

A "ton" of money? Really vs WVU. We can replace the 1 or 2 games with other good opponents have a real home advantage for our last go round with these "rivals". As far as ESPN goes they are in CA all the time since you have not noticed. It would make for a great story and atmosphere! I used to love playing Cuse and Gtown at Alumni Hall, how great would it be for us season ticket holders to get to experence that one more time and prevent other teams alumni access!! Yea that sounds horrible :woohoo: :woohoo:

completely agree jetstorm

I have felt this way for years now, with them thinking they are NY's team. But i always caved to the arguement that we needed the paycheck, and had to suffer through the Cuse home game at MSG. But now with them leaving the Big East I see no reason why we should give them the benefit of playing at MSG put the game at CA and play DePaul or Prov at MSG.

check it out, Cuse is the 8th closest school to NYC in the Big East. How are they NY's team? If you are NY's team do you really have to have an advertizement campaign to say so?

Distance from NYC
School Miles Hours Minutes
St Johns 0 0 0
Seton Hall 17 0 32
Rutgers 40 0 53
Villanova 105 1 56
UConn 142 2 54
Providence 180 3 34
Georgetown 232 4 21
Cuse 248 4 22

Seton Hall and Rutgers are in New Jersey, not New York. Nova is in Pennsylvania. Providence is in Rhode Island. UConn speaks for itself. Georgetown is in DC. I don't see any of those schools claiming to be NY's team....well because they aren't in New York. Your little chart of distance and time is completely irrelevant to your argument, or to anything else for that matter.

And like someone said earlier, Cuse said they are New York's team, not NYC's team. Sorry but life does exist in New York outside of NYC. And going off of their recent successes, and them being ranked number 1 in the country right now, I would definitely say that currently they are New York's team.

Also, why on earth would we play them at CA? That's just bad business, and would be really dumb on our administrations part. That game is one of the biggest games of the year (crowd wise). You make it sound like having it at CA is going to give us such a huge home court advantage.....but its not. We are going to be outnumbered in fans, regardless of where the game is played at. Why not have it at the bigger arena and make as much money as possible...

I agree wiht the foregoig in all respects except that there is no way we would be outnumbered in fans at CA, but that does not mean that we should play such an important game there. It should be at MSG.

This is a vomitous subject. Syracuse inarguably over the last decade and maybe beyond, has been the best team in NYS. This does NOT make them New York's team. From what I can see, there is no huge following outside of the Syracuse area itself beyond their own alumni.

In the NYC metro area, there are hundreds of thousands of college basketball fans (and maybe much more) who have adopted St. John's as their own, despite not attending the school. They grew up on the hardcourt asphalts, and pick your era, grew up following the Redmen, whether it be Lapchicks or Carnesecca's Johnnies, or later editions by Mahoney, Fraschilla or even Jarvis that did well.

These were the guys who made SJU basketball their after work dinner date at MSG for decades, and many of them were as diehard as any of us who spent inordinate amounts of time searching for a parking spot on campus, in the pits, and finally on the streets around campus should you dare to arrive for classes after 730 AM.

The Jarvis collapse and Roberts fiasco plunged all of those fans into a dormancy,   The buzz in NYC was gone when UCONN, Gtown, or Syracuse rolled into town. You could hear the bounce of a leather ball hitting hardwood in the empty rafters of MSG. That is, if opposing fans didn't drown that (and us) out with their outnumbering us.

Then Lavin arrived, instilled confidence and a system, and last years seniors rose up and reclaimed a top 20 ranking for much of the season. You know what, those comatose fans woke up. People starting talking about SJU bball around the watercooler, in bars, and on the street. SJU basketball is back, and we are St Johns, and with a much larger non-alumni following than Syracuse could ever hope for.

The best part is that the party has just started. This year's edition will struggle at times, mightily outmanned, but there will be shining moments that will give us a glimpse of what is to come beyond this season.

New York's team? Syracuse? SyrACCuse? Give me a break.  They are just another ACC team, a Yankee out of place among Southerners.

When Catlett was there, we always played WVU at Carnesecca or at least quite a bit. I don't mind scheduling that scum school at Carnesecca. They aren't a big garden draw anyway. I can't stand Syracuse, but it's a no-brainer to play the, at the Garden. Drawing fans is the name of this game.

your way off. There is no chance that we are out numbered by cuse fans at CA.

And by adversitizing in NYC on cabs and in times square they are saying they are Syracuse's team, Rochester's team, NYC's team, and Montaulk's team. Also when people say New York they do not tink of upstate they thing of NYC. And Cuse is dreadfully far away from nyc, therefore the chart is relevant and Cuse is the 8th closest team to NY in the Big east. Georgetown and Providence are more on NY's team than Syracuse

I guess you haven't been to any Syracuse games at MSG in the last ten years, because their fans outnumber ours, by a lot.

I think the BE tourney game last year was 50/50

I'm sure the only reason why they are on NYC cabs is that they ordered all the placards and found there were only 4 cabs in all of Syracuse.

And they come to every game at MSG dressed up as empty seats.

I get the gist of your post in fact I fell upon STJ as a college hoops fan from LI who started going to the Garden when I started working in the city. I had not special affinity for even the '85 team though I did appreciate their talents. But when the pre-season NIT wasn't enough anymore I bought up the STJ MSG package and held on to it for 10 years.

That said there's very few of those hundreds of thousands that keep the faith through good and bad, the type I would consider true fans.

That's because STJ fans can't, won't or don't buy up 18K seats for a game but CA's a diifferent story. Heck I think season tix and student sections account for more than half of the place. So even if single game tix went 50/50 at CA it would be better than 2 to 1 STJ fans.

BE Tourney isn't the best example due to the different ticket distribution policies in place. 1/16th of the place to each team and then tix for the most adventurous scalper customers as the week goes on.

Fans are fickle, period. I've bought season tickets in all but one season since 78 - have been there when we would sell out Alumni hall in season tickets, and when SJU was thottest winter ticket at MSG. How many Yankee fans of age showed up in the Michael Burke era when the team was horrible. I am a Mets fan - enough said - and can't simply follow a winner by changing allegiance, but most fans will show up for a winner and stay home for a loser.

That being said, there isn't another team in NY that attracts such interest in non-alumni than SJU bball. Of course, for New Yorkers, since we historically recruited locally, there was a close affinity form fans to players since they were from all the neighborhoods of the NYC Metro area.
