Wagner Game

@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Lavin: "This is by far the toughest schedule I've had at St. John's." #sjubb

I seriously wish he would stop saying things like this.

It became the toughest after the lucky win over SFState and the loss to Wisconsin. How many ranked teams did he beat with Norm Roberts players?

In 2011 the real Big East was at its peak and we beat Uconn, Duke, Villanova, Cincy, Pitt, Marquette, Gtown and Notre Dame. That was nothing to yawn about. I was never a Norm fan.....that our mom and pop program gave him 6 years still haunts us but those St. John's kids played their hearts out for a new coach that year. I fully expect Lavin's players to give AS MUCH this year. It was that success that allowed Lavin the opportunity to sign his first two classes. It was the power and glamour of the old Big East that attracted top 100 recruiting prospects.
Now I read tweets from Lav about how dangerous Wagner is and how they may be the fastest team we will face this year.
Sure, this is one tough schedule! Bring on Dartmouth in 2014!

Lavin's success year 1 was because of the kids Norm recruited, even though he, Norm, couldn't get anything out of them... got it
Lavin's perceived failure ( after 1 game) this year is because kids he has recruited don't give effort... got it..

Only reason Lavin got these recruits was because the Big east was a powerhouse conference... got it.

Makes perfect sense.. failure- Lavin's fault, success- Someone else ( the conference, no less) gets credit for that..

No one is saying Lavin is above criticism, especially when it comes to in game stuff... But the above statement you make reeks of an agenda that has more to do with personal feelings than anything remotely related to actual basketball. It is blatantly obvious..

You should have stopped at your third....got it .......because you obviously closed your retort by emphasizing .....you did not get it
Of course my opinion is "personal" as in, it is my opinion regarding the Lavin quote re. "toughest schedule" that he, in his hammer to pebble style, totally ignored his best season to date to justify the crap we have been seeing since last year, that has continued into this year. My agenda is that in a weakened Big East that even if we lose to a Wisconsin and Syracuse (likely), that Lavin spare us some of his typical BS regarding opponents that we, a team with 7 top 100 players, should not lose any sleep over,I.e., Wagner.
Frankly, you seem to have no problem saying similar things, without an agenda of course, in another thread:

"Realistically, anything short of a NCAA bid and a victory or two in the tournament and the seat gets hot....

I'm a Lavin fan, but this is the year that we need to see results on the court. It's his 3rd real, full season on the bench and had ample opportunity to get his players in here.. FTR- I think he has brought in a level of talent, no one could have predicted 4 years ago... Now we need to see this translate on the court.."

The difference is that I don't get worked up about "coach speak". Lavin is the master salesman. I don't pay attention to it, nor let it bother me.. you , apparently eat it up and get offended if you don't agree. Your prerogative.

While I think this season is crucial for Lavin and if not successful ( tourney with at least 1 win), he will deserve some heat, I have not complained about the job he's done to date. The defense and rebounding is an issue. I think it's an issue that will be worked out. Whe it comes to defense in basketball, I'm going to look at the players more so than the coach, sorry. Defense is about playing smart , aggressive , and hustle..

Throwing shots at the coach of the team you root for after losing to Wisconsin by 11 in the 1st game of the season, says something....

I don't know you from a hole in wall.. I'm sure you are a very nice guy, but it's obvious after reading a few of your posts that you don't like Lavin , it's ok... I'm sure the next guy will be a major upgrade..

I appreciate your response and your loyalty as a fan. However, you make a wild assumption that I do like Lavin, when in fact, I think he is a great guy and all you should have gathered from my comments was that I have not been thrilled with player development and his in game coaching. Something not only you have stated but half this Board.
There is coach-speak and there are dumb comments to the media about your team, players or schedule.
All I stated was his toughest season should have been his first when he coached players he did not know from a hole in the wall and had to play the likes of the teams I mentioned as opposed to playing Seton Hall, Providence and DePaul twice and playing only Dartmouth as a non-conference opponent in the new year while he was beating and playing the likes of Gtown, Duke, Pitt, Marquette, etc. in his first year. The fact of the matter is the new Big East teams, except St. John's have some of the weakest RPI's than any of the major conferences this year. That is the bulk of Lavin's schedule and except for Syracuse and Wisconsin, have no team scheduled in the top 100 RPI.

Improvement in D, shot selection and an a nice controlled win over Wagner and a lot of the early season transgressions will be, momentarily at least, forgiven.

Good job by consistently attacking the middle of the floor.

You can also see the benefits of high IQ guys like Sanchez and Jordan. Like the way Harrison is playing, as well.
