Wagner Game

Get the NCAA to drop the 3 point shot rule today and we are final four
contenders.

Correct. As the Wagner game shows, we still cant develop outside scoring. Sanchez should concentrate on the inside and the outside shooters should be Harrison and Hooper and the Frenchman. I dont think anyone else really has proven they have an outside shot on a consistent basis.

Jordan has had a shaky start but has the best form on his jumper. Sanchez has good form as well. I expect these guys to hit their fair share once they settle in.

Sanchez came the closest of anyone to making a 3 last night. It was 3/4 of the way down, before popping out. He's a very unique player. Looks comfortable both on the interior and perimeter. Can also play some point forward. Wish we had him for more then one year, but I certainly will enjoy watching him.

Once in awhile even a blind squirrel finds a nut. Sure eventually some of these players MAY hit a 3 point shot but it isnt anything to count on or build a winner on. As much as I want to see them beat Syracuse, I fear the fact that the Cuse zone will just put a wrench in any offense we have. We cant break the zone with outside shooting and the best way to win that game is to press all game and we know that isnt in the game plan

Good win tonight (any win is good in my book, even if you don't play well). Team played 20 good minutes, IMO, the first 17 and the last 3. Going to need more then that in the future, obviously.

Guy who really played well tonight, IMO, was Sanchez. Guy can do a little bit of everything on the floor. Unfortunately, I think we are going to need more points from him and Jordan (he'll be better, I have no doubt). Someone has to step up as the consistent 3rd scorer behind D'Angelo and Jakarr. It needs to come between the two guys I mentioned, and Sir Dom, and I don't think it can be by committee. Someone needs to step up on a consistent basis.

I like what Obekpa brings to the table. It's another element obviously, but I don't think he'll ever be a great rebounder. His hands are just too small, IMO, and that's something that obviously does not get better.

Would like to see Hooper play more obviously, but we also played mostly man-to-man tonight, and if we stick with that, not sure he can keep up.

Free throw shooting as a team has improved, and I think there are two reasons for this. 1. Sanchez has a good stroke, and 2. Garrett's gone. I think he was around a 50% free throw shooter last year, and never recovered from that game where he missed 8 or 9 in a row. A third reason would be Obekpa playing less.

Yes, we need to get better in quite a few areas, but I'm not as down on this team after tonight as most people on here seem to be.

Obekpa had 8 boards in 18 minutes. Are his hands small? I would imagine their huge.

I suppose not. Uncoordinated might have been a better word. Paul mentioned that he hit the floor 3 times for loose balls. I think those balls were loose though, because he didn't grab the rebound clean.

Uncoordinated and small hands. Apples to apples. ;)

The biggest upset in basketball history taking place on the big ten network right now

I'm watching it, as well.

I guess Izzo had his team unprepared.

Columbia is up 44-38 on Michigan State with 11 minutes remaining.

The Lions will lose but play great team ball. SJ would be down 20.

Give it up. This is boring.

You are starting to remind me of the kid in high school who volunteered to be a hall monitor every year so he could give the other kids orders. Stop telling others to "stop thinking or saying what they say". That is boring. As a long suffering fan that has seen around 5 good seasons in 20, I have earned my right to sarcasm, especially after over 35 years of season tickets rather than doing my analyses from my living room couch.
Fly up for a few games for Christ sake like a real fan! I want to buy you a few drinks Dink!!!

You make it sound like it is just so easy to fly up for a game or attend games! Well for some people it may not be that easy, and that doesn't make them any less of a fan!

Very fair point.

I really enjoyed the team's effort vs Wagner. I also thought it was a well coached game by Lavin. The subbing was effective and the outcome wasn't in doubt. Best defense by the Redmen in a long while. Harrison was sensational and could have gone for forty if he wanted. The man to man was a Godsend and I think we're going to be surprisingly good barring injuries. What a relief after the long ride there. Watch out Bucknell !

I don't disagree here. We still had lulls and still aren't playing the best basketball we are capable of. That said, Wagner is also a better tesm thsn people realize. They can make some waves with their ability. The have some very athletic kids and some solid guards and shooters. It wasn't a softie like usual. Bucknell is no softie either, but Lavin and Co. know it. They aren't going to take a team like Bucknell lightly. We have a chance to grab a solid RPI win on Tuesday and we need to do so.

Was travelling and just got to watch the game on DVR last night. After reading this thread I was ready for another disjoinited effort, but results aside I thought this was a big step forward in a number of key areas from Wisconsin.

Biggest thing I saw was better tempo on offense. We were pushing off both misses and makes, and everyone's first look was to advance the ball on the pass. If this pace is here to stay not only do we put ourselves in a better position to win games, but we're going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Thought we saw the first signs this year of the Jamal Branch who was a catalyst pre-injury in conference play last year. He didn't fill up the box score, but he was facilitating the best ball movement we've seen this season. The Dom to Branch to Harrison and 1 in the second half with the ball touching the floor maybe twice was not St. John's basketball as we've come to know it the last two years.

Speaking of, Branch/Harrison/Pointer/Obekpa with one of Sampson/Sanchez (we saw both permutations) was the most effective lineup in both halves. Thought Lav did a great job keeping Branch/Pointer/Obekpa in for long stretches when they were clearly clicking, and not defaulting back to his starters just because. This is one of his biggest in-game strengths, identifying and staying with lineups that are working.

Lastly, I know it's early, but anyone still want to try their hand without Harrison for the rest of the season (and next)? He put that debate to rest pretty quickly. Again it's early, but the inefficient volume scorer who cares about nothing but his PPG chipped in 5 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals and is shooting 46% from the field despite an abysmal start from beyond the arc. Glad to see him make the changes he needed to and stick with SJU and SJU with him, because it can't be overstated how critical he is to this team's success.

Good points. It's always nice to be able to watch the game already knowing you won so you can relax and focus on the offense and defense better. Elaborating on Harrison, it's nice to see him miss his first two threes, realize he's off, and then pump fake threes and take it to the hoop for the rest of the night. That's basketball IQ for you. He didn't do that
Last year, he hoisted up three after three even though he was clearly cold. It's nice to see his game is improving mentally. Tonight is a real great test for us because it is a big step up from Wagner. Great test for us, should be fun.
