Wagner Game

The biggest upset in basketball history taking place on the big ten network right now

I'm watching it, as well.

I guess Izzo had his team unprepared.

Columbia is up 44-38 on Michigan State with 11 minutes remaining.

The Lions will lose but play great team ball. SJ would be down 20.

Give it up. This is boring.

You are starting to remind me of the kid in high school who volunteered to be a hall monitor every year so he could give the other kids orders. Stop telling others to "stop thinking or saying what they say". That is boring. As a long suffering fan that has seen around 5 good seasons in 20, I have earned my right to sarcasm, especially after over 35 years of season tickets rather than doing my analyses from my living room couch.
Fly up for a few games for Christ sake like a real fan! I want to buy you a few drinks Dink!!!

You make it sound like it is just so easy to fly up for a game or attend games! Well for some people it may not be that easy, and that doesn't make them any less of a fan!

I think he was trying to be funny again. But good post, nonetheless, jumbo.

Jordan had a few go in and out last night, he will be fine.

IMO, he looked nervous. Looked like freshman jitters in his first ever game in front of home crowd. He will be fine, and when he relaxes he will be fantastic. He has all the tools.

Good win tonight (any win is good in my book, even if you don't play well). Team played 20 good minutes, IMO, the first 17 and the last 3. Going to need more then that in the future, obviously.

Guy who really played well tonight, IMO, was Sanchez. Guy can do a little bit of everything on the floor. Unfortunately, I think we are going to need more points from him and Jordan (he'll be better, I have no doubt). Someone has to step up as the consistent 3rd scorer behind D'Angelo and Jakarr. It needs to come between the two guys I mentioned, and Sir Dom, and I don't think it can be by committee. Someone needs to step up on a consistent basis.

I like what Obekpa brings to the table. It's another element obviously, but I don't think he'll ever be a great rebounder. His hands are just too small, IMO, and that's something that obviously does not get better.

Would like to see Hooper play more obviously, but we also played mostly man-to-man tonight, and if we stick with that, not sure he can keep up.

Free throw shooting as a team has improved, and I think there are two reasons for this. 1. Sanchez has a good stroke, and 2. Garrett's gone. I think he was around a 50% free throw shooter last year, and never recovered from that game where he missed 8 or 9 in a row. A third reason would be Obekpa playing less.

Yes, we need to get better in quite a few areas, but I'm not as down on this team after tonight as most people on here seem to be.

Obekpa had 8 boards in 18 minutes. Are his hands small? I would imagine their huge.

When Pete Gillen was at UVA he had a 6'6" wing designated 3 pt shooter (maybe Bill Frist?) who was critical in several victories. The shooter was not a great asset on D and Gillen organized his defense to protect that weakness and keep him in the game for offense. We probably need to prepare in advance to do the same for Max and/or Marco.

He also hit the floor 3 times fighting for loose balls. Overall the team was a lot more animated than against Wisc but O was a major improvement in attitude and effort.

Gillen was a masterful game coach with a lot of tricks. Completely different style.

It's amazing how we can all watch the same game and have completely different takes ways.

I thought Sanchez looked pretty bad at times. He turned the ball over, took some ill advised shots, and lost his defensive assignment a few times.

But conversely, guys I usually criticize impressed me. Obekpa played much better defense than I'm used to seeing from him. He still has a lot of room for improvement covering his own man, but he did a great job extending his arms in passing lanes, and even diving on the floor for loose balls. Most big men don't do that.

And for the first time I'm willing to admit GG might have a role on this team.
His hands are just as awful as I've always claimed, but he's rebounding well and is acting like a decent defender when we're in man. In zone he's a huge liability because he doesn't rotate, but for a few mins every night he's useable for rebounding and defense.

Also, Branch should play more. He's our best on the ball defender. Doms bigger and can block shots, but branch is the guy I want on quick guards.

Finally, I might be the only one, but it seems obvious to me why Hooper and Marco aren't playing bigger minutes. And I have no problem with that.

Paul, I remember them as actually having two main styles; structured high low post with slashers; or slashers with kickouts to shooters. A coach friend's son started on that team. With Keady and Whitesell sitting next to Lavin we surely know how to do what Gillen did. The question is whether we will get to the point of developing and teaching that scramble back into a game with 3's capacity before we need it in a game

Agree 100%. I'm looking forward to the Bucknell game, I wish it was tonight, going to be a good test .

Gillen would throw a lot of junk at you with gimmicks on both offense and defense. While I'm sure that Lavin knows how to teach these things, it hasn't been his style at St John's or previously and Gillen would probably be near the last in comparisons I'd ever come up with for Lavin and coaching styles other than maybe Pete Carril or even Bo Ryan.

I suppose not. Uncoordinated might have been a better word. Paul mentioned that he hit the floor 3 times for loose balls. I think those balls were loose though, because he didn't grab the rebound clean.

I'm pretty sure if everyone on the board each won a share of a billion dollar power ball lottery half the people wouldn't be happy. :)

Someone would blame the govt for taking taxes out
Someone would blame Fr Harrington for us winning it
Someone would blame Lavin for letting too many people into the lottery
Someone would say the lottery is for losers
Someone would say winning the lottery is bad because it brings more attention to the school and one of the players might leave school early

I'm going to go out on a limb and guarantee we hit a 3 pointer next game. And that really is going out on a limb right now. But I personally guarantee at least one 3 pointer.

so basically you are saying in a nice way that our chances of hitting a 3 pointer, are the equivalent of hitting the lottery for $billion

Yeah pretty much. lol

Get the NCAA to drop the 3 point shot rule today and we are final four
contenders.

Correct. As the Wagner game shows, we still cant develop outside scoring. Sanchez should concentrate on the inside and the outside shooters should be Harrison and Hooper and the Frenchman. I dont think anyone else really has proven they have an outside shot on a consistent basis.
