Visited Providence This Weekend

If you were local, I would suggest Queens College. One of my girls went there, got a great education and got into Georgetown Law. Props to qcredman.

I went to QC as well, and I couldn't recommend it enough. It's not good for a CUNY or a public college, it's very good period.
I can't speak for the sciences or professional studies, but in the humanities: the political science, history, economics, and sociology departments were truly elite. And the vast majority of classes are taught by full-time tenured professors, like QCredmen, who have impeccable credentials.

Any student considering staying home would be wise to give QC a close look. It's very impressive. My wife went to Dartmouth, and objectively, the two of us think I had the better academic experience.

My dad raved about it when I was looking for colleges back in 1989. Said it was really underrated. Seems like it is still very good school, and still vastly underrated.

Two of my partners went to Queens College undergrad and got excellent educations there. Saved a ton of money for post grad school by doing so and room and board too. Back in the day, QC did not have a law school, and when they opened one and I think still now SJU Law was considered a step above.

Famous QC alum and pretty smart guy: Jerry Seinfeld, if I am not mistaken?

Hey, every once in a while Ray Romano wore a St. John's sweatshirt on his show, I know I am off topic here, but does Ray have any connection to St. John's or is it just because of where his show was set??

My brother in law went to St. John’s and has 11 National Emmies and is the go-to video editor in NYC. Major contributor/President of the St. John’s TV Club which launched dozens (probably many more than dozens), of other careers, very well connected.

His wife also St. John’s grad was in the TV Club also and won two local Emmies for ABC Sports and worked alongside Warner Wolf, covered the 1980 Olympics and others and says St. John’s launched her career as well.

GO St. JOHN’S!

One-upped!
Seriously, though, congrats to your brother-in-law and to QueensFinest. I started at Cornell and finished at St. John's. The thing I liked about St. John's is the fact that you can do whatever you want once you are there. You are in the biggest city in the country and arguably the most important in the world...your opportunities are only limited by your ambition. I'd recommend it to anyone if the price is right.

Opportunities limited by your ambition...truer words were never spoken!! Let me add congrats to brother in law and QueensFinest!

I went to Queens College when it cost $68 a year. In other words - free tuition. I was the fourth born in a family of five (to a nyc fireman) and the first to go to college. The price was right.

I started at Cornell and finished at FIT via Stony Brook. At least I saved money on my downward spiral. ;)

PS I know you were all anxiously awaiting word. The girl chose UC San Diego last night.

Congratulations to her on a good school, and to you for saving up to $40,000 a year by not having her go elsewhere.

Not many cities nicer than San Diego.

And the campus is in La Jolla so I'm gonna get a round in at Torrey Pines South sometime during her time there. Played north a number of years ago. South was too long a wait for a walk on.

IMO ,picking a college involves many factors. The most important being what is a good fit for you. Factors to consider are, Do you want to stay local or not? Do you want the intimacy of a small college or would you like a larger institution? Cost, If ones father is wealthy, this is a non factor. This probably affects the middle class the most. If ones father is poor, schools give financial aid, Cornell could cost the same as SUNY. My father lost a lot of money when my brothers and I attended. We got financial aid one brother went to Colgate and another went to Northwestern, w financial aid the costs were equivilant to going to Rutgers, I went to a small school in NJ, which I enjoyed, then Rutgers Dental school. You don't want to graduate law school w 300,000 in debt. The academic reputation of a school is important, but I believe the cream rises to the top, so if you went to an average academic institution, but get good grades and score well on the LSATs you can go to a top law school. Good luck ,Jack

La Jolla is just what its names says: "The Jewel."

Is the Marine Room still in operation? Nothing like having the waves of the Pacific Ocean beating against the windows as you eat.

I'm an hour north from there visiting my brother. His wife lived in la jolla when she first moved down here. Awesome place.

Yeah Conor, I saw that on Facebook. Too far for me to drive down and have a beer. I assume you've become an uncle (again?) based on your comments? Congrats if so.

I have a friend who grew up in Dana Point. Was stoned every single day of high school.

Congratulations on becoming an uncle.

Congratulations! Probably the most beautiful college location in America. Good friend lives 10 minutes from the campus which is huge. Best weather in the USA. The Scripps Oceanography Institute is top class and the academics are as good as any ivy!
