Steve Lappas didn’t reach the tournament until year 3. So if Neptune makes it this year he’s surpassed what lappas accomplished early on
174-110 at Nova are the numbers to surpass. Which shouldn’t be a problem if he is as good as some say. I just don’t see it.

Just believe it's premature to make judgment on Neptune at this point. Very little prior experience as a head coach before stepping into a huge job. Imho he deserves two full years before saying he can't do the job. If they don't dance this year, time to start asking questions.

Losses to St.Joe’s, Penn, and Drexel (all with Moore) expedited the questions. They have bounced back nicely since then, but still a long way to go.

Understood but there are plenty of great coaches (and not suggesting Neptune will ever be considered great) who struggled their first few years. Just think he deserves the chance to learn from his mistakes.

Agreed, time will tell.

Time will tell. In my opinion he has tons of work to do just to reach Steve Lappas level.

Interesting comp as Lappas was another Nova assistant who came to NY to get HC experience at a mid major before returning to the Main Line. Also took over from a legend, albeit a fading one, not one at the top of his game. In his first two seasons he went 8-19 and then won the NIT his second with Kerry Kittles on the roster. Did he sign Kittles or did Rollie?

Yeah, he's not Jay Wright, and likely never will be but like you said in a later post Time will Tell if he even becomes a very good to great coach and recruiter.

Those Big 5 games are crazy competitive many years simply due to the fact that everyone knows one another from being in such a small area. Lots of pride on the line gives extra motivation to the non Nova schools. But under Wright Nova dominated in the second half of his career there. Won 8 of his last nine and went undefeated in all 8. But in his first 11 years they only won 5 outright and shared 2 others.

In the 44 years Nova has won or shared 29, Temple 28, St Joe's 21.

Rollie recruited Kittles, who almost followed him to UNLV. Lappas’ constant trips to Louisiana was able to retain his commitment to Villanova.

I totally get how competitive the Big 5 is, but Drexel was just admitted last April. That was a horrible loss.

Yes it was.

I’ve got a call into RP . Told him to put Ledlum on Dixon . Let Soriano stay underneath .

Dixon slimmer and lost weight . He likes to draw Joel outside and then drive past him . Ledlum has the size and strength to handle him in my opinion .
And remind the refs that setting up camp in the key is not allowed

Neptune won at Fordham which is darn near impossible to do. He brought them back from the abyss in his breakout season that won him the Nova job. Perhaps he's not terrible?
Agreed, but he’s not Pitino. Pitino is a master. I can’t believe Neptune Will out coach Pitino in this game. Pitino will have all the scouting reports and he will devise something that will be effective against Nova. Just like he’s done in all of our other games. He will have a wrinkle up his sleeve like the 2/3 zone against Xavier, throwing Dunlap in there against Butler. He had a good game plan against UConn the players just didn’t execute when it to helping on Johnson. Rick will be ready, the players have to execute. If they do we’ll win but we won’t be out coached.

Fordham went 16- 16 in 202- 22 with Neptune

Fordham went 25- 8 in 2022-23 the year after Neptune departed.

True. But Fordham is 7-7 this season.

An important addition for Fordham last season was Molloy grad and GTech transfer, Kahlid Moore, who averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds.

Their weakness is at point guard - (especially with Moore out potentially) - the pressure defense could be the key more than anything tomorrow, especially on out of bounds plays - they struggle with getting the ball in. Curious who matches up with Dixon - if it's Ledlum or Joel and then what the other one does. SJU can't let Soriano get out on an island on the 3 point like like Hofstra and BC did - there needs to be a plan to neutralize that - as it's where Dixon loves to fire from.

It's about time we beat Nova in their on-campus arena. It's way overdue.

I hate that they got to avoid us in that FINAL FOUR, we got stuck with Ewing and Georgetown, if we meet Nova or Memphis State we beat either of them and at least make the Championship Game.

Nova students and fans seem entitled, obviously not 100%, but Jay Wright seems like a good guy.

Go JOHNNIES! BEAT NOVA!
