I have been in wait and see mode ever since the Pitino hire was made. I was in the Arena when we lost to Pace, Michigan and Boston College and was not feeling optimistic about our team or seeing a path where we might make the tournament this year. Making the tournament and winning a first round game, for the first time since March 16, 2000, was my personal definition for having a very successful year.
That all said, today is the day I am the most optimistic about us having the type of season that we have been hoping to have for many years. Ever since the Boston College loss, this team has moved forward (especially defensively).
For the record, winning on the road in the Big East against a team that was undefeated and in first place, going in, is not something typically expected. Going wire to wire and never having the lead drop under 6 is beyond anything that I was expecting today. Kyle Neptune's Villanova may not be Jay Wright's Villanova, but wins against Nova have been very few and far between for us.
After four conference games we are 3 and 1 in conference and the only other time that happened in the last 22 seasons was in 2010-2011, during Lavin's first season. Additionally, we got jobbed by the referees in our only Conference loss this season, to highly ranked UConn, and still might have won that game with some better end game free throws.
Pitino deserves quite a bit of credit for getting these guys to buy in to both team defense and blending their offensive skills.
While some like to blast Jenkins on this board for some of his flaws (3 point shooting percentage and shot selection) he is clearly our best point guard and his play is very much on the rise. Joel is still our biggest weapon, but it is all the other pieces, that are coming together as a unit, that again is a big credit to our Head Coach. The Brady Dunlap who played against Butler and Villanova in the last two games does not resemble the, deer in the headlights, Brady Dunlap who was a significant liability in his few minutes in the Boston College game. Every player on the roster is having positive moments and no matter who is on the court I feel that the Coach has helped them to really find their role to be a solid contributor.
I guess I am still somewhat in wait and see mode but am feeling something now that I definitely was not feeling walking out of the Barclay's Center on December 10th. I am starting to look forward to selection Sunday for the first time in many years. Hopefully my optimism will not be for naught.
