Versatile Aaron Scott

His combination of size and versatility isn’t that easy to find. He profiles much bigger than a guy like Taylor (who I really liked) and it was important in terms of helping inside on switches and rebounding. At that size he was still able to keep up with guards and wings. More often than not, getting the better of them.

We can find some versatile forwards but to find guys like him as willing to do the little things and fit in so smoothly has got to be a challenge.
That is fair. Again, it is not anything against Scott. But the staff even said they specifically looked for length and athleticism by watching Houston practice. The staff now know the exact players to recruit.

And if there are a players entering their junior or senior season from a similar conference, with similar skill sets, and SJU shows interest, you want in. Especially when you saw the success and adoration a Texas kid like Scott received in NYC.

I absolutely love Aaron Scott. A true warrior who gave everything he had for us. But his stats this year ended up being 38% from the field and 29% from 3. Almost makes me wonder if all the energy he had to give on defense left him with less to give on the offensive side of the ball, because those numbers are very underwhelming, especially compared to his numbers from last year.

The injury pain and cumbersome wrap he wore was the issue, not his energy diminishing apparently.

Loved his play here, but he was a really poor defensive rebounder. We just gloss over that. Averaging 4.3 total rebounds in 27.2 minutes is crazy for a 6'8 4. He also surprisingly did not have a lot of bounce.

With Zuby at the 5, we really need a solid defensive rebounder at the 4.

I’ll say this, no one boxed out like he did, often times at the expense of himself getting boards. Kadary was our best defensive rebounder, that showed itself unfortunately yesterday too.

He was all or nothing on the box outs. Pitino constantly had to redirect him to those responsibilities. He was strong all year on the offensive glass. We were a poor defensive rebounding team all year, so there were plenty of opportunities for him to get chances on that end.

Kadary was miles ahead of our second best defensive rebounder. Pound for pound that was probably Deivon.

I think Scott is a perfect case where stats can be deceiving. Yes he may have only averaged 4 plus rebounds. But aside from the boxing out Amase mentions how many extra possessions did he get us by hustling for loose balls that turned into baskets.
Doesn’t count as a rebound but every bit as valuable.

Offensively this is true. He was also highly switchable on defense to put it mildly. You just cannot excuse away 2.4 defensive rebounds in 28.2 minutes for a poor defensive rebounding team. Aaron and Zuby were by far the worst defensive rebounding duo of any of the top Big East teams.

You knew when Aaaron would hit the glass by Pitino's pre-game and halftime interviews. He constantly had to be reminded of those duties.

Here is what I’m talking about with Aaron in two images of one play where Arkansas guy went right by him for rebound and bucket. He was not good boxing out in space with guys behind him. He was much better running in and getting in front of guys. This kid went right by him untouched.

Boxing out has become a lost art for many.

Aaron doesn't even reach an arm out a lot of times. They go right by him. Nobody is worse than Sim. Aaron is so good on the offensive glass, though, and he looks better when Pitino redirects him to boxing out.

Prey boxes out like a machine.
