Up Next: Creighton

How could we not stay right on him

Watched the replay 10 times, Obekpa picked off but Harrison was 5 ft away and didn't even make a move toward dougie. He was way off the screener should have moved out and let the other guy try and beat us.

I just feel obekpa should've been in McDermott grill at the end, he sagged off, and gave him a look.

He got picked off, could have even been a moving screen. D'lo should have been up more.

Yea but if obekpa was in mcdermotts jersey it would've been nearly impossible for him to be picked off.

McDermott scored because he is one of the best players in the country having his biggest output of the season. He can score inside and out, put the ball on the floor, and presents all sorts of problems for a defense. Did he give him too much room, yea of course, but this isn't chess - you have maybe a 1/10th of a second to make some decisions, and in this case, a shot blocker saw his man and saw the ball, and reacted to help out. I think we would all be calling Lavin brilliant had Obekpa blocked the jumper and we had won.

I think this time last week we'd have all signed up for a blowout at Butler, and a one possession game vs. Creighton. We came within 3 seconds of a chance to sweep both games on the road.

True, but we came within a basket of losing to Creighton and Butler.

Huh? Is there an 18 point shot in college basketball? It's late, but I don't understand what you just wrote.

Actually thought Lavin coached a good game tonight...the rotations made sense for the most part...and he didn't stick with guys "just because"...he had a good plan for Wragge and shut down everyone but McD...and made McD work a bit...

Like I said, if we shut down McD if even only once or twice, we win.

We played a good chunk of the first half with a lineup of Phil Greene, Sir'Dom, Hooper, Jakarr and Obekpa. It was bizarre.
I don't think that lineup was in for very long...but do agree not exactly the group I'd want in...

All these close losses hopefully mean the basketball gods are saving our close wins for the big east tournament.

Yankees have announced that they will be experimenting with different pitching rotations through August. They hope to start playing well sometime in September.

Enough is enough, this is he creighton game thread, stop hijacking it with your obvious hatred of our coach

Fair enough. Enjoy your coach's post game comments. See you on the Lavin thread.

This is a come from behind team. They have guts and grit. Don't count them out, ever. I think we make a run and not only make the Tourny, but also make a run. Just my personal thoughts, hopes and dreams.

This is essentially predicting we will win the BE tournament. Short of going undefeated from here, the at-large bid is off the table.

Yup. This team is not going from a barely above .500 team to a .900 team.

Credit to the coaches and team for hanging in and being competitive, more than I thought would happen. BUT, how frustrating is it to make a great comeback only to have a boneheaded coaching move and an inexplicable lack of focus and intensity give McDermott a wide open 3. I cannot believe the staff put Obekpa on McDermott on the last possession. A player not used to the perimeter, whose instincts are to leave his man to help and block shots, which is exactly what happened. Compounding that bonehead mistake, Harrison WATCHING the play as his man picks Obekpa, not even a thought to help and check McDermott, a great player who was lighting it up all night. Absolutely inexplicable to me on both. One last point, I thought Sampson played excellent D on McDermott despite his great night but quick shots and too much one on one on offense almost right from the start just killed us. Credit for the defensive game plan and the committment to D by the team but in the end they just showed they can play tough against a good team and lose, which we already knew from Wisconsin and Syracuse. Very, very disappointing.
Was

I think so.
Really, better then Jordan? Defense only I mean.

I didn't think that was the question. I thought you asked if Harrison was one of our 5 best defenders. I wouldn't think twice about having him on the court in a game situation on defense.[/quote ]just thinking with 11 seconds left on defense you would only think D and put your top 5 out there. Would not say Jordan is better than Harrison as an all around player yet, but on pure athletic ability and defense I would of thought he should have been out there
Why was Harrison even on the court, is he one of our top 5 defenders?

I still think that with these guys it's possible.

If Lavin did not have to sit Sanchez, Harrison and both point guards they would not have been in that bizarre lineup.
Have Harrison or Sanchez come ready to play in the first half this season??
Harrsion was invisible on both offense and defense in the first half. Sanchez just does not have the smarts for the game.

I do think Jordan gives us more on defense with his length. Overall seems to do a better job and seems to come out of a lot of frays with the ball

9-9 or 10-8 conference record is not totally insane to hope for.

I see them winning 5 of the next 6 and then 3 of the last 4. No, I'm not kidding and I'm not drunk or high.

Forever an optimist with the Redmen. I just cannot help it.

Please read this with John Lennon's "Imagine" playing in your mind.
Imagine there's no defense planned for McDermott.
Imagine allowing one player to beat you from beginning to the last shot.
Imagine if Lavin (Knucledhead Hines) told the team to deny McDermott the ball on the last play.
Imagine if Orlando Sanchez showed up for the game.
Imagine if D'Angelo Harrison showed up in the first half.
Imagine if Phil Greene was still sick.

This was another game where if players like Harrison and Sanchez, had they played semi-smart, would have been a win.  Kudos to Lavin for sitting both for extended periods when they were stinking up the court and disrupting the offense.  Both have been adept at that all season.  Sampson cannot defend his shadow but the big news is Welcome Back Chris Obekpa !
I had been saying since last year give him the freaking ball inside and tonight is the first time this season it happened. Pity two bad calls against Jordan or this may have been an upset. The last play and shot by McDermott was symbolic of the poor communication between players all season and a kick in the ass to the staff for not glueing a defender to McDermott. Epic fail on the last play cannot take away from a great comeback.
At least I got some satisfaction watching another turncoat experience my mal'occhio when Rico Gathers and  Baylor lost and went from being ranked #10 to 1-6 in the Big 12.
Now, beat Marquette!

Could be doable but that is still an nit resume especially if those two loses are creighton and nova.

We've lost two home games. One we should have expected (Nova), one we should have won (Providence, not as much because it was Providence but because the game was ours to hold onto). We've won one on the road. In terms we would be down a break, the equivalent of 1 win below .500. We have to break back, winning on the road at Providence, Seton Hall, anywhere, and hold serve at home just for .500. .500 will not be easy but is doable. 8-10, or 7-11 more likely at this point.

Add a win or two in the BET, and that is NCAA worthy. RPI, SOS and being red hot in the final weeks of the season all play a role for an at large.

Yes, I am WAY ahead of myself on a night we lost, no less. I just see this team on the verge of something very BIG.

I don't think it is totally insane either; obviously this team has the talent to compete with anyone. I, like all other fans on this board (well, most of them) am waiting for the light bulb to go off and this team to jell. They played a fine all around game against Butler, running an offense for the first time in what seemed like forever, so contrary to what many think the coaching staff has attempted to install one. Then they come out tonight again taking the first shot that showed, going one on one, etc. back to all the offensive disjointedness. Excellent D kept us in the game. Came out incredibly flat in the second, primarily still on offense, and Creighton went on the inevitable run a good team will make when you don't score for 8 minutes. Hung in very tough, finally pressured the ball hard (why wait until we were down 18?) and came back only, IMO, to come out with a terrible defensive set and (again my opinion) an inexplicable mental meltdown by a player many on this board want to label our leader. One play certainly did not lose this game as frustrating as that play was to me but when does this team get it and start to play remotely close to its potential for 40 minutes?

I just watched it. Heard Doug was outscoring us 28-27 and was expecting to see a rout. What I saw was a team who for the most part looked like the better team who just lost to a better player. That kid made play after play. Now that doesnt mean I dont have some gripes. The first with the reffs; they took jordan from us right from the get go and he was looking like he was going to have a great game from the tip. Two really questionable fouls and one drive in which creighton slapped his arm so hard you could hear it on TV. No call. McDermott was getting away with elbows all night and that hook in the last minute was unbelievable. UNBELIEVABLE. The reff was standing right there. That was followed by a bogus offensive foul call and a easily spotted illegal screen on the mcDermott three to win it. Now we did get some calls our way while we made our run but nothing which was game changing worthy.

Now for Lavin, why have Obekpa guarding him in that spot? 11 seconds left and they wont have time to set up a post play having to go the full court. Obekpa played great on him in the second but you dont want him following him full court. He was the one guy you cant leave and he did just that. That falls on Chris too. Secondly, what was that play he drew up with 3 seconds left? No body moved. You set up a play where rysheed gets the ball on the run and he realistically can get to the 3 point line and put up a decent look. Instead he was sitting underneath the far rim.

Tough one to lose. Believe it or not, we win that game and we were back on the bubble.

I think I am prepared for the possibility that this team may have already jelled and is simply one great player away from being a top 15 team. Without that player, we appear just good enough to lose close games. In SJU history, on our ranked teams, we always had that one player who we could count on. George Johnson, Reggie Carter, Mullin, Berry (when the stars aligned w both it was Final 4), Sealy, Artest, etc. Maybe for this era, that guy was a one and done. But IMO even with this cast, if we had that one guy, we'd be ranked. Maybe he will emerge from the current roster, but sooner than later would be great.

watched the game at dinner with my girlfriend! was yelling at the tv all game. The boys played hard tonight. I wanted this win so bad for them, they deserved it. What can you do, but come out and beat Marq.
