UMBC Game

Im just glad they learned to hit free throws this week...especially Nuri! If their FT shooting ends up in the high 60%s then this staff righted it in a hurry which tells me they're quick learners which also tells me they'll be sophs by Feb.

LMF Just wondering how Greene is your favorite when his offensively game is extremely raw and dare I say non existant?
Maybe raw and nonexistent is what turns him on. Remember, his last mancrush was Jasilionustein.

PS Greene's not as bad as you make him out. I can't believe I'm saying this about a freshman but he should be the starting PG, sooner rather than later.

You could be right......if it were January.....but right now he has no clue on how to run the offense since he hasn't learned it yet.

Agree with Tom, people were concerned that he might go pro instead of coming here. I could be wrong and hope I am, but I don't think we have to worry about him leaving after 1 year. Unless he gets bad advice.

It is hard to rip Nurideen after coming off a near triple-triple game. LOL!

No, he is not a pure shooter but a dribble-drive scorer who has a nose for the ball. Considering last year was his first year of competition after giving up the game after high school, I think it is very difficult to evaluate his game at this point and he may need this whole season to develop under the coaching staff. His job will be to keep Moe, GG and Harrison involved in the offense. Today he performed his role.

Not ripping him, I just agreed with Tom that he wasn't NBA or 1st round talent right now. People were worried he might go straight into the NBA, I'm just saying we should be ok for at least 1 more year.

Triple-triple is nice even against UMBC

Mike I was not referring to your comments but just making a comment in general about his lack of playing experience. Nurideen will be very difficult to evaluate until he plays at least a dozen games. He has actually played less BB than all our players in the past three years and that includes GG.

lawmanfan- I agree with what you said about Greene, he hasn't been very aggressive and it would be nice to see him get involved especially from a confidence standpoint. Dont know his personality but after not playing particularly well these first 3 games a good game against Arizona could go a long way in boosting up his confidence.

How ever disagree with your point on Harrison. I think his biggest weakness has been his shot selection. No need to take a contested 3 early in the possession, you can get that shot when ever you want. By making the extra pass, you can help set up a teammate for an easy bucket or eventually free your self up for the 3.

Remember its early, everyone is still getting a feel for playing with each other. As the season progresses everyone will feel more comfortable and improve on what they need to work on

I know this doesn't belong in this thread, the Mods can move it, but I was wondering if anyone knew a good place in Manhattan to get SJU apparel? Thanks

I do like projects. But I think that Phil is probably the best option at PG on the roster right now and that he may very well turn out to be the best of the guards on the team. Not this season, but down the road. He's fast, decisive, can handle the ball, doesn't mind sharing it, plays good defense, has great intensity. And I think that his drive and shot will both come. If they do, he will be the best of the lot. If they don't, he will be a pass-first PG who's a defensive stopper, which he could very well be right now. I like him.

PS this is the second time in a week we have been (more or less) of the same opinion. Stop it. It's making me all queasy and weak in the knees.

I said that Greene reminded me of Reggie Carter. First I said Mel Utley, but then I couldn't remember if I could actually remember Mel Utley and if I could whether what I remembered was Mel Utley or Gordie Thomas, so I switched it on the theory that I can't remember Reggie Carter either.

Offensively at least Lindsey at the 1 Harrison at the 2 is the ideal option, but I don't see that happening. I dig Lindsey's game in a way I haven't dug anyone's in a long while and think anyone who doesn't is crazy. Or in some cases, crazier.

We are going to have to wait for the Detroit game when Dickie V annoints Lindsey as the aire apparent. JC guard emeritus, phi slamma jamma, diaper dandy. This will be the official proclamation, and we can then all jump aboard
the Lavin train.

If PG turns out to be the best guard on this team (a) the coaches over-hyped Nurideen and Harrison, (b) SJ will be outclassed at all the guard positions for the next two years, (c) some fans should go into the crystal ball business.

I would love for Phil to become a major contributor in the backcourt but to make such a claim that he could be the "best of the lot" really dampens my hopes for players like Harkless, Lindsey and Harrison whom I hope will actually be the best of the lot that is left from our once #3 ranked recruiting class.......because if they are not, SJ and Lav are in for a long, long two years before Syracuse, Uconn and WV finally are gone. I was actually hoping to beat those scum begs next year.

Funny that you mention Gordon Thomas. I met him at the Red/White pre-game reception yesterday. He is a great guy. We talked about the current team and the about the teams he played on. I am not sure which season, but he mentioned they started out slow and the media declared St. John's done and then they went on to make the elite eight.

Fun post Fun:)
Since Phil has not shown us anything yet except one good game against a super high school level D2 team, I will go out on a limb here and say that Phil Greene reminds of Phil Ford without a Jump shot.

We have 6 new players playing together for the first time at a completely new level of ball and have already decided the careers of all of them. Lottery anyone?

I think PG is going to turn out to be really good. He does have a good jump shot ,it will rear its head soon with more playing time. He is a good defender like him a lot Actually I like them all. If and when we get a center like pelle with a few more lbs and GG moves to pf then we have something

The shot Phil hit to end the first half (full-speed, off-dribble pull up from 18') was pretty damn sweet.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I didn't know where else to post my question.

I was at the UMBC game Sunday and noticed that there were four guys in warm-ups sitting together on the bench that didn't get in to the game when we were up by 30 and we cleared the bench.  Does anyone know who they were?

Thanks

I am not 100% sure, but I think they are 'walk-ons' that have not been cleared to play yet, therefore, they wear different color warmups (they are not in uniform technically). I could be wrong but thats what I think I have heard.

Sorry to bring this up again, but anyone know where I can get SJU gear before Thursday in Manhattan. I left all my SJU gear at my parents house, and always forget to bring it back into the city when I go home.

Thanks, that makes sense -- they were wearing different warm-ups than the other guys.

This has been asked again and again, but if anyone on the board has any ideas I would appreciate it as well.
I have a brother who's going to the game with me tomorrow who asked where he could find SJU gear in NYC.

Any ideas? Or recent sightings? Modells in midtown?
