UMBC Game

I took far fewer positives away from this game than most seem to have. Yes we won big, but once again the team came out flat and got into a hole before they woke up. If they do that against real teams, by the time they wake up they will be down 30 and won't be coming back. They need to learn that defensive intensity starts at the tip, not 10 minutes into the game. They played better than they have, but this is still a work in progress and I didn't think the score was really reflective of some of the individual and team struggles.

Gift is playing well. He has good hands, runs the floor well, and shoots his free throws well. I am concerned that he will be undersized and that he has no help down low and that will be a problem for him against better competition. Won't know until he starts playing some real bigs.

Harrison is solid in every aspect of the game. Needs to take his shot when it's available. More on that later.

Phil Greene may be my favorite so far. He is fast, a good defender, has a good handle, is tough. Like Harrison, he needs to take his shot more often.

Harkless has a lot of physical ability and makes some nice plays because of it. He has a good feel for the game. He tends to disappear sometimes which is strange. He actually reminds me of Burrell, except I'm pretty sure he will develop as time goes on and will eventually be really, really good.

Nuri is a mixed bag. He has some nifty moves around the basket, handles the ball well, rebounds very well for a guard. OTOH he is not as fast as you would think he is, but his basketball smarts make up for that by helping him get into the right position to make plays. He unfortunately appears to have no jump shot whatsoever, is a poor free throw shooter, and tends to dominate the ball more than he should.

Pointer appears to have no offensive game whatsoever. He is good as a defender on the opposing small forward or a big guard, however.

Stith is contributing nicely, you can see that his maturity is paying dividends on the floor.

It looked to me as though the whole team was feeling their way today. Harrison and Greene repeatedly passed up shots and drives that they should have taken. The ball kept being thrown around the perimeter, and it looked as though the staff had instructed them to make sure the ball got inside. I frankly doubt that we are going to have much of an inside game once league play starts, so while in theory trying to get an inside-out game going makes sense, it might make more sense to give these guys confidence in their perimeter game and ability to score off the dribble. The exception is Nuri, who appears to be the one player the staff have given a green light to. It may be that the reason he dominates the ball is because that's what he has been told to do. IMHO when the real games start Harrison and Greene are going to have to score, and that means they have to be allowed to take their shots and drive instead of being told to chuck the ball in to Gift or defer to Lindsey. Frankly I'm not sure that Harrison and Greene won't both eventually be better than Lindsey (especially Greene).

Just like last year the team struggles to close out corner shooters, but I would chalk that up to a learning curve on the zone. I think the staff has been willing to take their lumps so far while trying to teach the zone, but they figure they will get crushed using it the next 2 games and therefore ran some man to prepare for that.

By this time next weekend we should know more. I still think that this is going to be a rough season, but there is a lot of talent here and if it is developed and organized well (and if Pelle shows up and gives us some size) this will be a fun team to watch down the road.

One issue I have lawman is that you say Nuri dominates the ball. By definition, a PG dominates the ball. They QB the offense and are the one position that has the ball in their hands the most. In addition, i don't know how you define "dominating the ball" by dishing almost double assists The guy was one dish away from a triple double. He dominated the ball by keeping it from umbc on offense as well as in the glass and in the hands if his teammates. I have no issue with Nuri tonight. He just needs to learn how to shoot moving forward.

That's worthy of +2 on the karma scale, which won't come close to eradicating your -11807.
I agree 100% with your Nuri analogy but that seems taboo on this forum.
Time will tell.

C'mon, Tom.... Nothing is taboo when it comes to Lindsey. It seems you've been going above and beyond to rip his game. That is the difference between your posts and others, in reference to Lindsey. He has shortcomings, as he doesn't seem to have a jumper and hasn't been good at the FT line (he shot better today). Both of 'em can be worked on and can certainly be improved. Otherwise, I think the kid has a pretty decent game.

Maybe, you were looking for Isiah Thomas or someone of semblance. Who knows!?! Lindsey was out of the game for three seasons until last year. I also wouldn't doubt this is probably the first time he's had real coaching.

I would think someone would give him more than 2 exhibitions and 3 regular season games before you condemning his game (games, in which he played decent-to-good).

I've never ever tried to rip his game.
He came in touted as a potential NBA fist rounder and I just don't see it.
He just can't shoot period.
Poor man's Smoosh Parker.

There is a such thing of doing something indirectly. It seems you've been indirectly shearing his game. Just because he currently isn't a first round NBA pick doesn't take away from his game.

Maybe, he could end up being a first rounder in the NBA after two or three seasons.

Agree with Tom, people were concerned that he might go pro instead of coming here. I could be wrong and hope I am, but I don't think we have to worry about him leaving after 1 year. Unless he gets bad advice.

It is hard to rip Nurideen after coming off a near triple-triple game. LOL!

No, he is not a pure shooter but a dribble-drive scorer who has a nose for the ball. Considering last year was his first year of competition after giving up the game after high school, I think it is very difficult to evaluate his game at this point and he may need this whole season to develop under the coaching staff. His job will be to keep Moe, GG and Harrison involved in the offense. Today he performed his role.

LMF

Just wondering how Greene is your favorite when his offensively game is extremely raw and dare I say non existant? When he shoots I cringe. At one point he drove the lane drew a foul and proceeded to miss both FT's.

Of all the freshmen, Phil is the rawest of the group. He has all the aggressiveness Moe now lacks but only half the talent. The first real test for all our guys will be at MSG this coming week but without three of the top 100 players whom we all hoped to be part of this game, I will take good effort and a loss less than 10 points as great progress by our young team at this stage.

BTW, good to see Zona come in undefeated. Better motivation for SJ.

I think tom should change careers and become an NBA scout because he clearly knows more than those individuals who said Nuri was NBA material. In his in depth, spot on analysis, he obviously saw something that no one else could see.....

Greene on the receiving end of too much premature criticism. He was also one of our best players and hit everything in one of the exhibition games.
With over 20 pts. It shows he's capable. He's only 3 games in but has plenty of talent IMO. Give the kid time. I thinkhe'll be real good down the stretch.

Call it criticism if you want but its fact. He struggles to draw iron during warmups too. I know he had 20 in the exhibition but every game since has been the polar opposite.

LMF Just wondering how Greene is your favorite when his offensively game is extremely raw and dare I say non existant?
Maybe raw and nonexistent is what turns him on. Remember, his last mancrush was Jasilionustein.

PS Greene's not as bad as you make him out. I can't believe I'm saying this about a freshman but he should be the starting PG, sooner rather than later.

Handling the ball, defense and all that he's fine, no question. Though if Stith continues to attack the basket which nobody seems to want to do in half court it would be hard pressed to sit him. Greene can control the offense but when he shoots, it ain't pretty.

I was at the game this afternoon. Lindsey continues to impress me and if he could improve his jumper he could carry this team. He shot better from the FT line today so I definitely think his shot is a work in process.

Dom Pointers defense is outstanding (not just this game but in every game the season), offense not so much, but he creates points of steals and forcing turnovers which matters. It may not show in the box score, but he will get a lot of PT for his defense to shut down feature players in conference games like Jeremy Lamb and Kris Joseph.

One last note, last season I thought Coach Lavin did a nice job of rotating players in and out of the game, and he continues that this season. I think everyone on the team plays well together. Good win and looking forward to seeing these guys play on the big stage at MSG.

It's hard to say anything definitive about these guys until they go up against decent competition.

Nuri finishes as well as any STJ guard I've seen.
Gift as any center I've seen.
And Mo plays like he should have "Sealy" on his jersey.

But all this comes against creampuffs.

I'm happy where the team is because its ridiculously young and in past years we usually lost to creampuffs.
