UCONN back to Big East?

Don't see how anyone can dislike this move unless it's strictly based on their emotion. We all hate UConn...but again this is a business. Why are we assuming it will be "harder" to make the tourney now? If UConn is ranked on the reg again, that's 2 more chances we can beat a ranked team. The chances have decreased considerably in conference post realignment. I see it as, they will have a target on their back, not vice versa. We beat them the last game we played them in 2013...they are beatable. This guarantees sellouts at UConn and at MSG for our games. It also guarantees a TON more BET tickets sold and much more exposure. I can see Dan Hurley flipping out already on the sidelines after a big fast break dunk by one of our future players ;).
I dislike it and not because of emotions. They’ve done it before and I have no doubt that when UCONN returns back to elite status, which they will in the Big East, they will again try to get into the ACC or Big 10. They are still trying to make football a big time program there.
Who cares? We are in a much better position now as a league. UConn basketball is just a bonus for our league. Say they leave.. we return to where we are at right now. Plus football in Connecticut has zero future in one of those big conferences. Zero.
As
Long as UCONN has football, it will be their number one priority. It’s where the money comes from. And why I think they’ll bolt within four years.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to go through another realignment when they leave.
They don’t make any money on football, only hemorrhage millions...
Yep. That’s a fact. But it’s not sustainable. And that’s why if they have an opportunity to move into a power football conference, they will.

NO to UCONN. Although it looks like it doesn’t matter at this point.

The BE is making a deal with the devil. Sure the conference will benefit short term.

However, at the end of the day unless they abandon football the original problem still exists. They will leave again if given the opportunity. Football and chasing football money is king. The minute they see a way (May or may not happen) to reach for the golden idol they are gone Mark it down. I can’t believe how easy some are fooled.
I will wait to see the details before I feel one way or the other. But anyone should already know how this ends.

I care, uconn needs the b.e. to be good, top recruits don't care about that league, look at some other schools in that league lol.
They'll come to the b.e., get better recruits get good again and try for the acc again.

I dont really like being used.
Make the penalty.20mill, if they accept then that'll show they are serious about wanting in the be, if not then it shows they have every intention on leaving.

I thought Val said everything was fine and there was no need for expansion............

This is a no brainer. Negotiations and exit penalties aside (which I agree should be covered), this is an obviously great move for the conference. As far as impact on SJU, if we are afraid of having to compete with UCONN for fans & recruits we don't belong in a power conference. To the best of my recollection UCONN fans didn't own the Garden during the Jarvis years when we were every bit as good as they were.

She also said she has a great hair stylist.

The goal is to be ready to compete with UCONN and the other power BEC teams going forward.
I embrace that challenge and am confident we have the right AD and the right HC and Staff to meet that challenge.
But selective memory hinders sound positions.
Truth is that St. John's' fabulous BET win in '00 (Jarvis' 2nd year) was the first time (and last) SJU won the Tourney since 1986 and the last time Jarvis (HC from 1998 - 99 to December '03) achieved that honor.
Meanwhile, UCONN won the BET 6 times from 1990 - 2004, including 1999 and 2002--when Jarvis was HC.
That said, it'll never happen but UCONN should be required to agree to dismantle its Div 1 football program as price of re-admission into the BEC.

The Big East does not have an attendance problem. Yukon does. The "no brainer" upside is conjecture and not based upon recent Yukon history. That Danny Hurley will do anything at Yukon despite all the grass is always greener praise he gets here, is also not guaranteed but he'd definitely have a better shot at it in the BE.

The only actual upside to Yukon in the BE is the women's program and that is probably Val's motivation (pioneer in modern women's basketball and former head of WNBA). That may or may not "lift all ships" but has it done so elsewhere? How compelling is it for the small schools to recruit on the premise of guaranteed losing to Yukon every year? Yukon does not fit the profile of the conference and screws members in particular St Johns, Villanova, Seton Hall. I agree without any humor that there should be a buy in and a buy out. If they screwed over Ollie with zero shame, they aren't going to do the same to Big East member schools? Get the money up front. You are dealing with dogs. Otherwise this is just an ego move for VA and completely unsettles what is actually working here.

Excellent, articulate post, Paul. You nailed the issues!

Paul, have great respect for your opinion on all things. However, my view is UCONN has been pretty mediocre in men's basketball before and after Calhoun so just don't agree that schools like SJU, Nova, Hall etc. can't more than compete with them on recruiting trail.

Cannot be said better, Paul!
I guffawed at the first two sentences.

It's not just about NY area recruiting but the fact that they are a state funded school and state schools play by different rules. Jim Calhoun made Uconn what it was in its prime. We didn't compete because of our incompetence in hiring national brand coaches and instead went with the Brian Mahoney, Norm Roberts and zero experience debacle of the Mullin fiasco which put us right back to square one. I have hope because now we have a real AD and coach not part of the mom and pop poop of the past. As for the women's game. Geno will not be there forever and it's time for all the women's programs to step up in the Big East.

I was referring to the women's program.
My impression is Ackerman has wanted this addition for some time.
I've felt like she's gotten worse every year, and this does not change my opinion.
Anyone know how they will reconfigure the tournament once there are 11 teams?
Hopefully they add a 12th one to balance it out.

Don't know the behind the scenes w/ Ackerman, but she deserves credit for securing MSG for BET for next 8-10 years, even if it cost more. UCONN coming back is a solid move for men's basketball & other sports. Otherwise I liked the idea of filling with with similar profile schools like St. Louis. Holy Cross want in ? Lol.

I'm guessing a tripleheader on Wednesday, with #6 vs. #11, winner plays #3.

Top 5 get byes to the Quarters.

What has been working in the new Big East?
Villanova has been carrying the water, the well, hell the damn reservoir for this new conference.
Take them out of the equation and the death notices of the new BE would be plastered all over town and rightly so.
This conference needs a jolt.
You add a traditional rival with the best facilities on the east coast and a fan base that no team comes close to matching.
Agree with all the safeguards mentioned here, but this move is needed. The conference is stronger with UConn than without.
