TV Watching & Cord Cutting

Started watching Fargo on Fx this season
A little weird but pretty good
First 2 seasons were even better. (Wasn't going to comment on TV shows-my post was to note the heap of sympathy you all seem to have for the laid off ESPN employees).

Looks like I have some new shows to watch. Current favorites are Goliath with Billy Bob on Prime and Leftovers on HBO which is weird but the best show on TV to me . Keep the suggestions coming because wife is almost due and I will be in the house for awhile :)
is there a 2nd season to goliath ? that was a good show

I'll have to give leftovers another chance

Anyone watch the pope show on HBO with Jude Law ?

I remember you posting that you liked Breaking Bad. Have you been watching Better Call Saul? It starts slow but has some interaction with other old characters.

Yeah we loved breaking bad. We started with Saul but it was slow in the beginning and then we stopped. All my friends are saying what you just did that we have to go back and give it another chance.

Same thing happened with me and the first true detective. I dropped it after 2 or so episodes but at the end all my friends were raving on Facebook about it so went back and watched it and we loved it

Getting older my attention span gets shorter :)

What's brilliant about Saul is that it basically has the premise that the path to evil doesn't always start out that way. The fact that it's a prequel is cool in that it takes some characters who went down the wrong path and by rolling it back X years, you begin to see how they ended up where they did in Breaking Bad. Interesting character studies - is Jimmy the bad guy or is it his brother, who apparently never broke a single law. How did Mike become this principled thug he became. I think it's brilliant writing, and my favorite show.

you are right that it's brilliant and in some ways when I first started watching it I was thinking that it was actually better than Breaking Bad. But I have to admit to being in the same situation where I keep meaning to go back but haven't. Hopefully it won't end up on the "brilliant but cancelled" list.

Agree with you guys. Vince Gilligan, creator of both shows, is a genius. Character & plot development is superb & on a minor note his feel for cinematography is excellent.

true dat. it is fun to find the Easter Eggs in the show(s) too. (There are a few on redmen.com but no one has ever found them or at least told me they found them.)

I'm curious, as someone who hasn't watched either, when I binge them after retirement (long list of those) would it be interesting to do Better Call Saul first? Or is it necessary to do Breaking Bad first?

I totally gave up on Better call Saul as like you said it was just so slow. I guess I should give it another shot? When I start a show and it doesn't grab me right away I just give up. Probably the reason why I watch the Wire over and over . Instant satisfaction :)
I swear I have been thinking of going back and starting the wire all over again. X Files too

I did that, went back and binged on The Wire, enjoyed it. Also binged on Ray Donavan after a friend told me about it. Retired life has its benefits.

Jon Voight is great on Ray Donovan

BB first. I am watching BB for the second time. When I was in ABQ a few months back I went to Walter Whites house, the car wash and Pollo Hermano's (which is really a burriito place). It was all a bit surreal.

I don't think there is a series that pulls you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat more that Breaking Bad. It has my vote for the best series EVER!

a few more for your list that I remembered:

On Netflix:
Sherlock (BBC)
Stranger Things
Longmire
Penny Dreadful (that I mentioned from Showtime is also available on Netflix)

Also "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" with Elijah Wood. This is BBC/Netflix but I watched it on AMC. Not sure how all that works. From the same author as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

On Amazon Prime:
Justified (Really good. Based upon Elmore Leonard books)

Loved Justified and Longmire.
Also must see Brothers (old Showtime), Sons of Anarchy, Kidnapped (old NBC), Frank's Place (old CBS).

I'm just glad people got laid off at ESPN so now I have found about a bunch of new tv shows to watch :)

for those of you who like shows like homeland there is a netflix show from Israel called Fauda that is great

If you like the Marvel universe Netflix has four and soon five original series. I enjoyed them all including Iron Fist (lot of people hated it). My order of preference:

1) Jessica Jones
2) Luke Cage
3) Daredevil
4) Iron Fist

Also available on Netflix:

Wallender. This is a British take on a Swedish show. It is actually really good.
Marcella (A British female detective show. Well done)
Crossing Lines (another cop show. European but some American actors)
Hemlock Grove (not for everyone but overall I enjoyed it. Kind of modern gothic )

On Hulu:

Bracquo (subtitles French cop show similar to The Shield)

On Amazon Prime:
Catastrophe (relevant assuming by "due" that your wife was pregnant)

Showtime:
Penny Dreadful (This show can be pretty dark but it is very well made.)

I didn't like Iron Fist. I'm partial to Daredevil because my brother is buddies with the guy who plays he daredevil. I hear he isn't excited about The Punisher series. He wanted it darker than they were willing to make it which bums me out because I loved the Punisher comic growing up.

Speaking of The Walking Dead... Am I the only one that hates this whole Negan story line? I found the past season fairly boring.

first half of the season I didnt likee that much but I liked the 2nd half

Homeland same thing. 1st half was boring 2nd half I liked a lot.

Loved Billions this season

Super Bummed that Game of Thrones will only be 7 episodes this season because 2 or 3 of the episodes last season were some of my favorite ever

I like Daredevil and certainly better than the Ben Afflek version but what I don't like is how often he is whining and fretting over pseudo moral quandaries. I know he is supposed to have this tormented Catholic conscience but move on already! Besides I've got my own real life tormented Catholic conscience. I don't need it in my Marvel alternate reality...

Seems like The Punisher felt the same way about the whining...
