@Tulane, Fri. Dec. 2, 8pm, ESPNEWS/970AM

Tulane looked really young and inexperienced to me.

They looked just like St John's did one year ago - young and inexperienced
Fwiw, the announcer last night said that we have the 2nd youngest team in D-1

2nd youngest team in college basketball, made up of mostly 3 star recruits, and people are calling for the coach's head early in what is essentially his first real year. SMFH!!!!!!

I'm so confused. Its a bunch of 3 star recruits? I thought STJ had 3 top ranked players, a JC player of the year and a JC stud and 3 under recruited future NBA players from Europe? Hyperbole not mine.

Muss and Frued were pretty well recruited, Frued maybe a bit more. Amar was not recruited at all and wouldn't be here if our previous coach's summer vacation plans didnt include Italy. As a team, Id say our players average about 3 stars. Some higher(IE Ponds), some lower (Amar). They're young, its their first year playing together and we have a coach who is learning on the job. Patience!.

The third Euro is Sima.

Re rankings, no they don't average 3 stars since the only guys who might have bee 2 stars really shouldn't be playing and more than half of what should be the core rotation were 4 star recruits. Youth is an okay excuse for what we're seeing on the floor, lack of talent recruited is not. While it might not be Kentucky's roster, it's more than enough to win if your coaching and talent evaluation are at least a little above average.

before the season started people were saying this was our most talented team since Jarvis. We have talent. Kids just need to get seasoned and improve along with staff hopefully

Before the season people were delusional.

Dangelo's junior year we had the most talent since Jarvis's run.
Harrison, Sampson, Pointer, Jordan all would be the best player on this team.
Plus role players like Obekpa Branch Greene Sanchez

It's a cardinal sin that that team didn't even make the tournament.

Desco you would take a junior pointer or freshmen Jordan over Lovett and Ponds?

Hmm...
Pointer made a huge leap forward as a senior, but jr was also that terrible experiment with him bringing up the ball as a point guard so who knows what he really could've done if put in the right position.

Lovett is hard to compare because we really haven't had a true point guard in forever.

Overall as much as it pains me to say it, Rysheed Jordan was the most talented of the bunch. All else being equal I would take him as a freshmen over both Ponds and Lovett. But - all else is not equal. We know he was MIA from practices and a general pain in the ass to coach.

Final answer: Lovett because we need a point guard or nothing else matters. If we already had another pg then he'd be #2.
Dom is second because he did so much on the court and as a junior he was already ridiculously experienced. We have no one that plays defense like he did, and he was an underrated passer. He got easy buckets in tranasiton and on put-backs. We havent seen that this year.
Then Jordan. Then ponds. No disrespect to Ponds, he may have the best 4 year career. But right now he's not better than Jordan or a junior Dom Pointer.

Pointer and Jordan were also physically ready for and or in some cases superior to the competition in the big east.

Ponds and Lovett for all their talent are going to be undersized and pushed around some in BE play.

For example, there was no question that Pointer and Jordan could finish through contact. And they were superior athletes to boot. It's why, despite their somewhat limited shooting skills they were the higher ranked recruits than Ponds or Lovett.

Just to interject,
Was a Sir Dom fan but Ponds value to the team as a freshman is much higher than Sir Dom's in his first 3 years at St. John's. Compare stats for starters. Pointer blossomed in his senior year and a better comparison would be with Amhed or even Yakwe, who is light years behind Pointer on almost every level.
Jordan was a talented 6'4 guard who threw it all away and we will likely never be able to compare him to any of our former players because he had such a checkered career.

Desco, fair points but I would disagree. Dom Pointer as a junior was not a good player. Not like not BE starter good. But like not good not good. Jordan was a phenomenal talent and I loved him as a player. I think by the time he was 5 or so games into his soph year he was a really really good player but as a freshman he was not nearly as effective and his %'s showed.

Ponds and Lovett are playing ridiculously well, and they are both very very good basketball players.

Not to speak for Desco and not weighing in as to whether any of the players on Lavin' junior team were as talented as Lovett or Ponds. But, that team was the most talented across the board since the Jarvis team. Desco's point that it was a travesty that they didn't make the tournament is an understatement.

kind of agree and it definitely wasn't me saying this was our most talented team. I think Harrison would be the best. I think Lovett is better as freshman than Jordan though. I'd put Sampson as 3rd best and Ponds as 4th.

Mainly you are right though that we have tendency to blow kids up bigger than life but Freud was talked about by I thought scouts as top 50 type player and basher Juco all american better than Sanchez

Overall though this team on paper rankings is kind of highly rated though beginning of season

That Lavin team though definitely should have made the tourney

Agree with all you're saying Desco, except your assessment of Lovett and Jordan. If Lovett and Jordan were both Freshman on this team, IMO Lovett would still be the starting PG and getting the large majority of the minutes at the PG spot. Jordan would be spelling him and the 2G, or possibly be the starting 2G. Not saying that Jordan didn't have more upside, just saying that coming in Lovett is a more finished all around product as both a PG and as a player. Notwithstanding Jordan's lofty ranking coming out of High School. With all due respect to the staff, not starting Lovett cost us the Del St game. Not sure if there was something else going on behind the scenes, but if there wasn't that experiment was a huge failure. Lets hope that we've moved forward from there. As goes Marcus, so goes our season.

Mike I try not to put to much credence in the opinions of Redmen.comers when it comes to kids coming out of high school. The over-enthusiastic/cock-eyed optimistic/Rose colored glasses wearing tendencies of our fan base usually result in grossly overestimating the actual abilities of our recruits. Having said that, there are certain posters on here who have actually seen some of our recruits play during high school and who's opinions should be respected. This team has some talent, but with the exception of Lovett and Ponds, who are immediate contributors, all of the other kids are going to take time to develop individually and collectively. Yes Yakwe was 4 stars in his class, but as soon as he re-classified you could just as well have knocked one star(at least) off this ranking. Muss and Frued were both 3-4 star kids depending on where you looked. Muss probable should have been close to a 4 star kid, Frued at this point looks like he should have been more of a 2 star kid. In any event, I still say this team has more of a make up of 3 star kids. We can build a program around 3 and 4 star kids, however it tends to take longer to build a program around those kinds of kids. The expectations by some on here, that at this juncture we aren't going to be experiencing some serious growing pains, is just downright foolish.

I agree completely that that team was most talented and probably underwhelming team in a while. I was just comparing players at respective times in their careers. My main point is to highlight just how good Lovett and Ponds are. Cause their 2 of the 5 best players we've got in the last 15 years .

Good points, Monte ... although I think it's a little to early to downgrade Freudenberg to a 2-star recruit. He looks like he has good court sense and is a good passer, and if he had hit a few of his shots (and he's only taken a handful of them, mostly from behind the arc) in limited PT, we might be seeing things differently. He's obviously put pressure on himself, and once he hits a few shots in a row and regains his confidence, I think (or at least, hope) we'll start to see a different player.

what was his box score the other game ? I know he didnt hit shots but I think he seemed to be around the ball a lot and like you mentioned he had good ball movement when he got the ball and passed it.

I'd like to see him hit a few to get him going a little. If he can be a little more physical and hit some shots we might need him to be kind of a stretch 4

Not giving up on the kid by any stretch Redken, but f you compare how RF looks right now to how Amar looked as a freshman, they are probably comparable. RF with more skills but Amar more athletic. Amar was the equivalent of a 2 star kid I believe. The so called recruiting experts don't see the European kids nearly as often as they see the American kids. As such, I believe that the rankings/stars of the European kids are a little less accurate. My feeling is that RF should have been no more than a 3 star kid coming out of high school. Like most 3 star kids, he will take time to develop. That's the whole point of my argument. While our fan base has some legitimate grips, our team as a whole is pretty much performing right about where they should be based on our talent and experience.

Once chatted with a former coach who knows the Euro kids. He thought RF would need a year of maturation, but would be a solid four year player.

My premature observation, however, is he seems very slow at this point & a high tempo game may be a challenge for him. I think he passes well, is team oriented & with added strength may be a decent rebounder. Not to get technical, since I am just a fan, but he appears to have a bit of a hitch on his jumper. To me shooting, if he indeed is a deliberate type player, has to be his main value. Hopefully with added time down the road we will see that.

Fran F really knows the foreign kids & he was much higher on him than Mussini. I guess I will hold out hope on that & his inexperience at this level. Still happy we beat out Vandy, BC & I think Zaga for him. We'll be able to better judge next year IMO.

Agree on his shot, not fluid. To me probably the most disappointing aspect of his game. Not easy to fix.

It's early guys. There are enough knowledgeable people that think highly of him. This includes the coach. When Dom looked back on his poor showing in his junior season he cited lost confidence and a lack of maturity.

Are you insinuating that we're not knowledgeable? ;)

I credit you guys with everything I know about the sport. While Ralph has taught me all I need to know about the old Munsters episodes. During the rebuilding years talking Munsters can get us through couple of rough games.
