Wow!!
Of course this is Rick Barry's son and Miami really wanted him
Somewhat surprised (and disappointed) that he didn't follow in dad's footsteps

RB has had at least 21 sons who have played high D1 basketball and nary a one has chosen Miami.

Every time I read about Canyon I'm like WTF, how did this happen, but I guess he became a father again around 50 and I've got friends who've done that.

Don't know how many (if any) of them were pursued by Miami in the past
Having read South Florida papers, I know Larranaga wanted this kid badly

Butler plays transfer game well;

Per Evan Daniels;

Charles Matthews is transferring from Kentucky, his high school coach Gary DeCesare told Scout.

Man this guy will be a nice pickup. Wonder if slice could have made a play

Fwiw, Marquette initially recruited him. Some Big 10 teams also had interest in past apparently.

His high school coach is Gary Decesare who was the long time coach at St. Raymond's in the Bronx and knows St. John's well. Unfortunately we have not recruited anyone from where he is coaching now in Chicago in a long time but I am sure there are several connections we can use if we wanted to start a conversation. Not sure if there would be interest on Matthews part but could come in and play with Ahmed for a year and then move into that spot.

Two potential problems:
1) Gary D. was never a fan of St. John's
2) No space available. Do we chase AA a second time? Boot an injured player?

Another gentle nudge to AA and if we don't get Matthews we can welcome him back again? :)

Sounding like California is the early frontrunner for Marcus Lee, source told ESPN. Bears were heavily in mix when he chose UK.

It's not just St. Ray's. SJU has rarely successfully recruited players from any of the Catholic schools in either the Bronx or Westchester. There was the Ricky Torres experience, Bill Walsh and, I think, Kevin Loughery. Any others?
