Transfer Portal

It makes sense for a player to delay a decision until they know who our head coach is going to be and who will be on his staff. They have plenty of time to make a decision.

But don't players usually commit to a school due to the coach? So I guess the players don't really care that CMA is no longer here, they didn't come here just for him in the first place.

Don't think it's as simple as that. Very clear that some of the players were very fond of CMA (especially Soriano) but they also may like the school, their teammates and the chance to play for a great coach like Pitino. Also think a NY kid like Posh may really relish the chance to finish up with a great senior year after a disappointing junior year. Finally, no reason for them not to wait a week and see how the coaching situation plays out before making any portal decision.

This is the reason Van Macon was named interim. To keep the chaos at bay while things get sorted out. Much of the roster (along with their family members) LOVE Van. It is incredibly commendable that the team is still "in tact" all things considered.

I do think it'll change soon, but as of this moment, those are my thoughts.
do our chance of keeping Gardner rely on Van sticking around?

Obviously a kid won't go to a school where they hate the head coach, but I think in most cases the kid comes for the assistant who had the longest relationship with him. That's why no one has split yet: They love Van. He's limited in what he can say to chatty kids in the age of social media, but I'm sure he's strongly hinted who is the main candidate and that he has a good chance of being retained by that main candidate.

Speaking of portals—Did the story ever come out as to why we had some many players leave 2 years ago?

Wasn't just one reason. A couple were divas for sure, and a couple just wanted more PT or to be in a role that CMA did not see them in.

I kind of break it down to a few different reasons. Moore and Cole were good friends and for pretty obvious reasons weren’t working out here. Earlington, Roberts and GWill were also very good friends and all transferred to lower level schools for more PT and different roles. I do remember there being weird rumors about kids being jealous but that was squashed by the kids.

If I were a St John’s player , I would ask myself the question , who would not want the chance to play for Rick Pitino?

from what i understand Pitino is very difficult and demanding.

i think some players may find that to be a harsh transition from CMA.

so it may not be about the chance to play for Pitino but more about do you want to put in the work and meet the demands

You poll anyone associated with basketball, and they will put Pitino in the top 5 in the college landscape, today, on the ability to develop a kid as a basketball player. Of course everyone is different, but if a kid wants to get better, Pitino is at the top of the list as a college coach, and there are few with the track records that can match him. Not theoretical. Actual. Even the biggest Pitino naysayers will admit this.

The more time goes on, the more kids move around, the more I feel like the "school" itself doesn't matter at all to these kids. It's about the money and the opportunity to showcase their game so they can get to the next level.
