Transfer Portal 2022

Maryland hmm. Would think Willard would be clued in on Jones being headed to Queens, but wouldn't be the first time he pulls out a bag at the last minute to steal a kid from SJU
St John’s fans are funny
If didn’t like the kids game as much as I do would almost be looking forward to crazy posts when he goes somewhere else. Geez if I had a nickel for every kid that was def coming here that didn’t.....

These days, it’s never over till the check is signed.

Absolutely. I was thinking the other day that we could land a kid like him if we were coming off a great year and had Curbelo coming in. Much like I thought he would do here, he's going to increase his scoring average 7x there. Bates is another one. Put him here and he'd score a ton, but we just don't win enough to get these kids' attention. Plus NILs will lag until we win big. Vicious cycle that hopefully gets broken this season.

What is this like 6 transfers for Cooley?

Wonder if he heard of the concept that retention is what wins basketball games, at least that is what I was told.

I guess a good test will be whether or not he does better with this more “talented” roster than he did with last years more experienced one.

The longer it goes on the less likely it is to happen. If he wanted to be here so bad it would have been done already (Jones). All this "done deal" stuff is wishful thinking. If you want to bring in top end recruits and transfers get into the tournament a few Years in a row *see Providence)

That’s why when some posters were foolish enough to predict how the team would fare based on what other teams had lost, they failed to consider that other teams like PC who came off a good season, would parlay their success etc. into great transfers.

Let’s break this down:
Center-Next year’s Soriano vs last year Soriano
I have to think that Anderson will figure out that Soriano is big, has a nice touch and can get some easy baskets if he you know...gets him some looks.
Edge Next Year

Power Forward-Champagnie vs supposedly Jones
JC was not aggressive, did not shoot as well as the previous year and lacked lateral quickness.
I really like supposedly Jones game. JC is still better as SJ has never been focal point of teams offense. If supposedly should become Not coming Jones.....Whoa

Small forward-Wheeler vs Mathis, Wusu or a freshman
Only way this is not a slaughter is if the freshman comes up huge or Wusu spent off season wearing the sneakers Jimmy on Seinfeld wore that made him jump.”Jimmy can jump” Wusu can not
Huuuige edge last year

SG-Mathis vs Curbelo
Neither can shoot, Curbelo was a huge recruit and played 2 years for a good program, though so did Mathis but giving to Next year’s team

PG-I think Posh will put in the work to improve his shot as best as it can
Edge next year

Bench-Basically same cast of characters
Think Pinzon and Stanley will get more consistent mins so edge Next Year

Coach- well short of wearing a Norm Roberts mask and having Geno Lawrence’s son slowly dribble for 40 mins it can’t be worse than last year
Hopefully edge to next year

Bottom line list 2 of our best 3 players and only 2 shooters
As much as I like Curbelo and supposedly Jones additions on paper we are worse

Wait...

So you go through this exhaustive exercise of position by position - and all but one is deemed to be "edge next year". AND your summary is on paper we are worse??? That's logic for you!
PF and SF = 2
I know math can be hard but.....
Also SF is a huge loss

Basically roster is only better if you count on returning guys improvement
Outgoing guys better than incoming and that is with a guy that is not def coming

This recruitment not dissimilar to Curbelo and that turned out well.

Was talking about providence but I love this discussion.

It’s only semantics but I always thought champ was the 3 and Wheeler was the 4. And obviously we are on different ends of the wusu spectrum but there are certainly things he does better than Wheeler. Scoring wasn’t one of them.

The team underachieved horribly last year. Get Jones and retain the others and I like our chances to be as good if not better than next year. Whether that amounts to an NCAA berth we’ll see.
Yes very sensible
Saying roster improved or guys will improve because of our coaching another matter
Also this fan base turns on guys quick and then put too much on new guys and then quickly show disappointment
JC and Wheeler are big losses

Was going to put Champ / Wheeler position disclaimer in because figured someone would question lol
Honestly both were in between 3/4

Honestly, this analysis is a little silly. There are so many intangibles involved in how teams perform (e.g., chemistry, “hot hand,” luck) that it’s very difficult to predict whether a team will be better, worse or about the same. There’s also the dynamic of players who relied on others previously stepping-up because of a “star’s” departure. While I understand the desire to analyze, I just don’t think there is much predictive value — games are won//lost on the floor/field, not on paper.

I don't mind analysis but with two open scholarships its too early to do that. Hopefully we fill them.
