Tim Cluess Out

I hear you, but the abortion of a process and the resultant poor choice does not justify keeping Chris. He was done and was also not giving the required effort, long before the situation with his brother. BUT, the admin should have had plans A, B, C and D lined up, not just theoretical possibilities, but sealed and ready to go.

And despite Repole's diatribe, Cragg is not entirely without fault. These disputes should have been sorted out before letting Chris go, so that he would have been retained if this level of discord existed at the top.

can't be worse than the 2003-2004 team
People kept saying next coach couldn't be worse than Mullin. How is that working out?
No telling how bad we might be.
I wanted Cluess to get the job but I'm very happy for him
Nobody want to (or deserves to) be sloppy seconds for anyone
You made the right decision, Tim
Good luck for continued success with the Gaels

The only realistic name that was still out there that we could get excited about. We're going to be in the basement for a long time.

We can't get a quality proven coach, we get two star recruits, MSG is like a road game.
Have we finally crossed the line of irrelevance?
Are we clinging to a life jacket in the Big East? Alot of teams struggle in B.E. it's a tough conference. But our history demands more consistency even through struggles.
It's sad. My personal connection to StJ goes back to 1970 as a football recruit to a start up program. And my son an alum 2007. Been a fan ever since. "We were...." ?

Similar relationship with the school. But, we've been irrelevant for about 2 decades with limited exceptions.

I was ridiculed several years ago on this board for suggesting that St. Johns consider moving to a lesser conference. NOT because I wanted to, but because I felt that the admin was not ready or willing to make the commitment to maintain the traditional competitiveness that St. John's always stood for. Given that lack of will or resources or both, my feeling was that I wanted to be in a conference where St. John's could be consistently competitive, and where its level of commitment to the program was commensurate with its peers in conference. I want to have a good feeling, and enjoy, the team and it successes. I did not want to be a constant doormat in the BE.

So, I argued to my ridicule (lol) that consideration be given to moving conferences. It would have been a hard pill to swallow. But, in hindsight, that lack of will and/or resources has come to destroy a very proud tradition, and has come to make St. Joh's basketball (and in some sense the university) a laughing stock.

I won't re-visit that suggestion, but this is very sad indeed.

Maybe hoping against hope,. but I do not believe Cluess is a dead issue just yet.

He is smart to remove himself for this process, but if SJU realizes that this really should be their guys, when they come up with a solid 100% raise, he'd be foolish to back off.

The ugly girl at the dance (to some people at least at SJU) should get prettier by the minute. I'd rather see her as the prom queen than anyone else mentioned so far.

Admire your spirit and support for Tim, but not happening.
Sources: Iona's Tim Cluess has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching vacancy at St. John's. #SJUBB
Jon Rothstein
Sad news. Tim deserved better than how SJU treated him on this comical 'search'.

Would be nice if some of our "leaders" could put their pride aside and admit they were wrong, but that has no chance of happening. Cluess won't come here and we won't try winning him back. Anyone who opposed Cluess is going to be in for a really rough few years if our next coach doesn't deliver.
Sounds like they were never going to hire him anyway. Feels like a Costanza move.
He was never a serious candidate. But, he certainly did whip up the press well.

For the record, I am keeping my name in the ring to be your next head basketball coach at St. John’s. I need 2.2mm 5 years and 1.8/mm for assistant coaches. Your move Cragg.

He was higher on my list the last time around, but that statement was like a gut punch. Really feel badly for the guy. But staying at a school where the president probably isn't a damn moron is the smart move.

Just got tired of being option B, even as they kept eliminating option A. Who could possibly blame him.

This by far is the most inept process in our history.

Fixed that for you.

I know this board loves Tim, but in life just because you really want things doesn’t me your entitled to them. Cluess didn’t even get an interview, he was never a candidate. If there is something to get mad at it’s that Zach, Zags, and Mike built him up like the second coming. If that didn’t happen a random low D-I coaching saying I’m withdrawing from consideration would just be comical.

Yea, and he never coached at this level before, and never won an NCAA game, and is old as shit, and crusty personality and teams don't play defense, and he loses a full 30% of this games, and he lives too close to campus, and he's never been offered a big time job, and he and Looie have a feud.

Wow, that's so profound. I thought it worked that way.

No, most on this board are more rational and knowledgeable than the ones making the decisions. Cluess has been for several decades a perennial runner up, so it is not like he is an obscure or random choice. And, he has the support of a large part of the fandom as well as a very large part of the NYC basketball community.

So, you know...

Is it a feud if one party isn't participating?
WFAN reporting it also. Quotes Rothstein as saying this is the worst college basketball search he has ever seen.
Doesn't sound good for Cragg does it?

Hey, Panther 2 recommended Mike Boynton from Oklahoma State and that's good enough for me.
