Things that bugged me about today's Syracuse Game

Let just stop being mad about it and face the fact here. Syracuse has over taken us as New York's College team. They came into our house, completely overpowered our fans, and showed why they are the most popular school in New York. If that came was in the Carrier dome there is no way we even have 2% St. John's fans in the dome. It's just time to face the facts that they have beaten our ass at becoming New York's college team.

Yea, it was pretty embarrassing being a fan at today's game, for most of the game I felt like I was at a road game. Especially when they had the audacity to do their little stand up and clap until their teams makes a basket thing. That's classless to do on the road and is pretty much telling of their fan base. Most of them were drunk by the time they got there anyway. My whole section was Orange, it was disgusting.

Don't agree at all. That was a one time deal. Have to believe that these kids will come back in the future and kick their asses backwards. If I don't believe that then I would give up on this team. They are just a Johnny come lately but that won't last "F " The Cuse... Period!!!!

First, cuse is going to come to MSG every year because Boeheim wnts to show his face and because they'll pack the Garden. MSG will set up some sort of ooc matchup against another highly ranked team. It's the same thing rat-face does just about every year. I just don't want it to be us. Screw 'em, let them play Baylor or Kansas or some Big 10 school.

Second, a lot of people are taking season ticket holders to task for selling out to cuse fans, but the worst was watching the half dozen or so fans dressed in orange sitting four rows behind our bench. These seats are supposedly for either big bucks donors or for St. J's use for faculty, etc. That was the worst.

The demoralizing reality is that SU fans did not come out to the Garden to see SU vs. SJU. They came out to see SU period. They knew they were #2 and we had not beaten a ranked team. They could have packed the place for Seton Hall, Rutgers, or any other team. If every SJU fan stayed home, they likely would have sold out the Garden by themselves. This show of fan force will convince SU and ACC admnistration that scheduling a couple of ACC games at MSG will result in great crowds AND a home game atmosphere for SU.

I think complaining about Cuse fans being there etc. is just sour grapes. The only way to put an end to it is beating them on the court and we seem to be light years away from that.. As usual all SJU's problems are self inflicted and they will stop when we put a full, competitive team on the court. We got a bit of a respite last year and it was nice. I really enjoyed yelling at Ratface, Calhoun, etc. but we didn't follow up. Blame it on bad luck or fate or whatever but we've already had a corner on that crap. The simple fact is that top notch teams don't hire Norm Roberts but even he was able to assemble enough talent to win with. Playing with freshmen was unavoidable but several miscues went into the eventual size of the roster. The playing field was level and we came up short. Lavin's illness was unfortunate but we could have been developing kids instead of fudging our undies over whether they're leaving early. The next few months will be another turning point and I really hope to see an upswing here as I get over the Orange injection.

I agree with your whole post pretty much. I figured 75/25 Cuse to STJ. But do you really think these ppl traveled for this team? Most are from the area. Cuse grads are all over the city. No question STJ fans sold tickets. I know the ppl behind the basket you mentioned and 3 Cuse fans behind STJ bench too!!!!!

Just let this damn team go away and I hope Monasch stands up and does not schedule them in the future.

You know that won't happen. As Boeheim has indicated they have been playing St.John's and Georgetown for 100 years and intend on keeping us on their schedule. Even though, I don't appreciate the lowly Cuse crowd at the garden I want a chance to pummel these lowlifes.

Two way street. Yeah we've been playing for years but its time Monasch takes a stand and I hope Gtown AD does as well. If it was AD at either school its what I would do. I still think Boeheim never coaches a game in the ACC.

1000 % Moose but you know Monasch doesn't have the stones. I wonder how many Cuse t-shirts and jersey's were sold

SU was undefeated and ranked #1 up until a few weeks ago, and are having one of their best seasons ever. There was a lot of buzz surrounding the team, not to mention the attention brought on by the actions of Mr. and Mrs. Fine. Many of their NYC fans went out and bought tickets a while ago in anticipation of possibly seeing an undefeated, # 1 ranked team. During our heyday of the 80's, the fans at the SJU-SU games were usually split 50/50, so I'm not surprised that it was 75% SU fans at the game today. They had their day today, we'll have ours soon enough and when we do I want SU on the schedule so we can inflict the same type of beat down on them.

1. you are ignoring the fact that if you sit in an SJU season ticket section, more than 1/2 of those seats were occupied by a Syracuse fan.

2. I don't ever want to play them again once they are out of conference EXCEPT in the NCAAs. If your from Brooklyn and want to play at MSG, come to SJU and play a ton of games here, or go to a Big East school and play here in the BET and every other year. Other than that, let a kid from NYC have his friends read about him in the newspapers if he wants to go to Syracuse.

Agree that tix in St. John's season section shouldn't go to Cuse fans. Regardless Garden would have been overwhelmingly orange. As for keeping them out of MSG, I highly doubt that's going to happen as MSG is going to want them (they're a huge draw) and they want MSG (for exposure/recruiting). If it's a relationship that benefits us why shouldn't we continue to play them? That would be bad business.

Because we will always have jerk assed fans who willl sell their tickets. I wish we could find out who did that.

I don't think Syracuse will lose anything in terms of success and recruiting when they go to the acc. They are the no. 2 team in the country. Winning and success will allow you to recruit, no matter what conference you are in. Right now they seem to have no trouble recruiting and winning in the "best conference in country". And just because they go to the acc, doesn't mean they are all of a sudden going to be recruiting the south or anything like that. They will still continue to recruit NYC and everywhere else. That will not change. Syracuse will be just fine in the ACC.

As far as all the posters who are calling out everyone for not going to the games.....shame on you. Just because some of us don't go to every single game does not make us any less of a fan. Some of us aren't located in NYC, and can't just pick up and go to the games. Don't sit there and make it sound like you are better than everyone else for going to the game. As far as the student section goes........get over it. It happens everywhere. I used to do the same exact thing for football games. Its not that big of a deal.

Finally, for those who were complaining about them dunking and showboating at the end of the game, there is a saying that my old coach used to say: "If you don't like it, do something about it....." I don't blame syracuse one bit. If the other team isn't going to stop you, why would you hold back? If our players didn't like what they were doing, they should have played a little defense and hustled a little bit and stopped them.

I hope other schools don't read this site, because it makes all of us look like a bunch of whiny girls

The Cuse will struggle not because of the ACC move, but because they are going to lose their HOF head coach in next few years to retirement. Jim Boeheim is irreplaceable and that coupled with a move down to a southern conference will be difficult to overcome.

I wish you are right but you can't be serious.

You Mean Father Harry scalped his seats to Orange fans?? :eek:hm
Has Father Harry attended his annual garden game yet?

I think it all depends on how the Bernie Fein investigation plays out. If it comes out that Boeheim knew and didn't do enough about it, a la Joe Paterno, he may be asked to resign before he gets fired.

And I'm sorry, rivalries with NC State, Wake Forest, Clemson, and yes, even Duke and UNC, will not be the same as the Orange rivalries with UCONN, Georgetown and ND. Now, having said that, they'll still be playing Pitt and they may develop a new rivalry with BC. But against all those southern schools? I don't believe so.

I hope we do schedule Cuse and UCONN going forward. A few more recruits like the players we have and a little more size and I see us kicking the crap out of both teams going forward.

Actually he was there for WV.

Uconn? Where are they going?

I’m a 3rd generation native New Yorker (and by that I mean NYC). Went to public school right through high school and grew up a St. John’s hoops fan.
I remember the Golden Age of the Big East when it was dominated by St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse and Villanova. I remember Mullin, Glass, Berry, Jackson and Wennington. I remember the Redmen when they WERE the Redmen and not the freakin’ Red Storm. And because I remember those days I STILL respect the Johnnies every time they take the court.
I’m also a Syracuse University alum that attended Saturday’s game. I was a freshman at Syracuse the same time Pearl Washington was so I know of what I speak.
Of course I now root for my alma mater when the schools play but that’s just to be expected.

I bought 5, $15.00 face value tickets in Section 227 on StubHub in November for about $65.00 a pop. Had no idea that they were from an SJU season ticket holder until the guy sitting behind me told me. Yeah I had a few drinks and had a nice buzz. Yeah I was loud and had fun but I’m too old to be rude. I have kids the same age as the kid sitting behind me in the St. John’s sweatshirt.

I too dislike the standing and clapping crap that SU fans do at away games. Mostly because I find it irritating that someone in front of me is standing up during the game and blocking me from seeing it. Also there are some things that should stay at home arenas – you don’t see Duke fans hopping up and down at road games.
As to why there are so many of us at MSG – you guys all know this – lots of Syracuse alum are from this area and lots of us get jobs after school and settle here. Syracuse fans travel well - I’ve been told -because the nature of a private, non-denominational university is to attract students from all over. It’s why you’ll see a lot of orange in games in California as well.
As to the move to the ACC – we don’t like it but the landscape changed and the almighty dollar rules all. Do you really think the fans want to give up the rivalries with St. John’s, Georgetown, UConn, Villanova and Seton Hall? Please. All of our schools BUILT this conference, the last thing the fans wanted was to leave. But since when are fans opinions listened to?

A few of you have mentioned the poor behavior of the Syracuse fan and that’s fine but really is it any different than Pitt fans? West Virginia? Whenever you’re getting beat by a team, their fans are the most obnoxious fans ever. Personally I think UConn fans are the worst of the bunch.

The answer to your issues is simple – develop a winning program. Your team wins, the fans will come and when the arena is full, the blue-chippers will want to play for you, when you get the blue-chippers, you win, etc., etc.. The biggest mistake SJU made in my opinion that set you guys back was firing Fraschilla and hiring Mike Jarvis. Fran was having success and attracting the players. I understand why he was fired but Jarvis was horrivble. He just alienated every single HS coach out there. Roberts spent his whole tenure trying to repair that and now Lavin looks like he’s got a nice plan in place. Just lots of bad luck for you guys this year.

So look, don’t hate us, don’t hate ‘Nova don’t hate Pitt. Just beat us. Because the reason that we fill up the Garden, the reason that we want to beat the crap out of you is because WE KNOW what St. John’s is capable of, we remember Walter Berry stuffing it down Pearl’s throat in the BET. It’s payback and as some here said payback is a bitch.
I for one will truly miss going to Syracuse – St. John’s games at the Garden. Sure there will be the early season tournament games against Michigan State or Stanford but regular season Big East games against the Johnnies were really special to a NYC kid like me.

I know I've commented negatively on a lot of your posts over the years but I would be remiss if I didn't thank you for all the laughs you've provided me. I mean this post just screams out what a funny writer you are.

Really good post. SU is a team we love to hate, and 99% of SJU fans will miss everything about this great rivalry that even is kept intact will never have the intensity that comes when you play Nova, UCONN, Gtown, Pitt etc, in a 3 week stretch.

Well kids, we can get revenge if we surprise in the BE tourney. We were able to beat WV and WV probably should have beaten Syracuse had they not been screwed by the refs.
It would be nice to win a couple a BE tourney games and play them again in a neutral court since the distribution of tickets would be even. LOL!

You're kidding right? If we win a couple of games and then play cuse their fans will have gobbled up all the tickets dumped by the losing teams' fans, they place will be crawling with orange.
