My guess is that in a similar way, players are as dumbfounded, bewildered, and confused by the tremendous influx of potential transfers into the portal as fans are.
This new rule is designed to give student athletes free movement without penalty to what may be a better situation for them. That right gives a kid flexibility players never had before. Even if very happy at a school, why not explore opportunities that may be there for you.
Let's face it. No one who comes to St. John's can claim bragging rights the way a kid who goes to Duke, Kansas, Villanova, UNC, or any of the basketball elite programs.
It doesn't mean anything's wrong here. Obviously, with an overachieving team, and a BE coach of the year, lots of thing are right. This new rule presents an opportunity for our guys to potentially better their situation and their futures. Nothing more or less.
I think of it this way: How many of us would discourage our own kids to transfer to Harvard, Yale, or ANY school from St. John's if they had an opportunity to secure a better future for themselves.
That's all it is IMO. Nothing more or less. All the speculation, searching for backstories and backstabbing discredits these kids that we root for. I mean, that's it really - we root for our kids and not simply for the name on the front of their jerseys.
It's a mess for sure, but let's see how this plays out.
