The St Johns Mount Rushmore

I get it now, Anderson was a victim of circumstance at both Arkansans and SJU. In all my years on this planet, Ive lost track of the amount of times I've heard that excuse from losers. Ironically I've never heard it from winners. Spin it any way you want, not only was Anderson the worst coaching hire dollar for dollar in SJU history, he was one of the worst coaching hires dollar for dollar in college basketball history. The sooner we real SJU fans put him in the rear view mirror, the better off we'll be.
The St. John's administration had run the basketball program into the gutter. They hired Mike Anderson after a comical coaching search. It was a bad hire and acceptance and while I don't fault Mike for taking the money, it was predictable what happened here. For myriad reasons, his recruiting was abysmal at St. John's and because of that he never put together a balanced roster with top to bottom depth and chemistry.

In reference to your hyperbolic statement that Anderson was one of the worst hires dollar for dollar in college basketball history, I get it. For you he is the devil now. The truth however, is more nuanced than that extreme viewpoint. I am glad you guys got Pitino and more importantly, got Repole back in the fold. Now the Johnnies have a chance to dance this year and I look forward to watching them battle in the BE.

Just chiming in but that may legit be true considering his (currently unpaid) extension which the school will likely need to pay. I believe that'd be 8 years at a couple million per with zero NCAA (or even NIT) appearances. Think you'd be hard-pressed to find a worse contract.

So now I have to ask Panther what he liked about McIntyre. Did both brothers play for St. Johns? I just remember the old Long Island Press League clippings where one or both McIntyres would have crazy scoring games of 50 or 60 points post college. I think they played for the Richmond Hill Inn team, a bar on Jamaica ave. Never saw them play either.

I saw Dove play once, post professional basketball at my parish gym in the CYO unlimited league. I sort of remember Mel Utley having done the same, playing for st mary star of the sea in Far Rock.

Dove was absolutely horrific that night and may not have been sober he was so bad. Still remember a slight older than me parish guy, who was decent but not in Dove's class shouting abusive things towards Sonny which royally pissed me off. 50 years later still gets me mad. George Ponte

Both McIntyre brothers played at SJ, Kenny transferred here I believe from BC and played 3 years here, while Bobby was 4 year guy and heavily recruited from Holy Cross HS

I think Bobby may still live in Bayside. When he was a senior and Dove a junior I went to many of their games at Alumni Hall. I believe both of them averaged 20 ppg+ that year.

It's tough just picking just four players, and I only go back to the Mullin years, but why no love for Leroy Ellis?

Kenny McIntyre, who as a senior guard while Bob was a junior forward, was MVP of the 1965 NIT. He scored 100 points in four games, including 42 in the first-round win over BC on phenomenal shooting. (I was frosh in attendance & still have vivid memories of that performance.) In the final against Nova – Joe Lapchick’s last game -- Kenny scored 18 points and Bob had 16. A third brother, Dennis, played at St. John's in the early 70’s, but if I remember correctly, didn’t see much PT. Sadly, cancer took Kenny at 63. Happily, Bob is still with us; I had a wonderful conversation with him at the Lapchick statue unveiling.

Always felt dismayed that Leroy's jersey was never hung from the rafters alongside those of the "Legacy" players, especially -- if I remember he was very ill at the time. For what it's worth -- probably not much -- I've always felt he was our best center regardless of decade.

He and Tony Jackson were quite the combo during the time they played together.
