The NCAA Tournament Thread

We will have our chance next year. Let’s see what Matt and Pitino can do with a whole year to shop for talent. Not a whole lot of excuses imho if we don’t come out of the gate strong.

Some on this site were criticizing the team for not playing hard enough against UConn the last game. I thought we played really well and it’s borne out by the fact that UConn is obliterating really good teams in the tournament.
That was me and I stand by it, we gave away too much by just not having everyone busting it on every play, every loose ball, every rebound. You can feel differently but I guess I was the only one on the board not thinking beating SHU and playing UConn tough was enough. I thought we would get in but because of the Pitino factor, not because we EARNED it. That game was there to be won on a day UConn played great and we pissed it away IMO by not understanding EVERY play counts.
And maybe reveling in losses is part of the reason SJU is on the outside looking in AGAIN with fans hating on a team and a coach that takes NO plays off.

It was particularly noticeable how UConn went away from the three in the second half. The box score backs it up. 37% of attempts in first half were 3’s. In the second half, only 20% of UConn’s attempts were 3’s.

Excellent halftime modifications to the game plan by Hurley during the game.

UConn has played seven Postseason games this year:

1) Xavier 87-60
2) St. John's 95-90
3) Marquette 73-57
4) Stetson 91-52
5) Northwestern 75-58
6) San Diego State 82-52
7) Illinois 77-52

Only one of these teams scored over 60 points.
Only one of these teams was competitive against UConn
Only one of these teams did not play in a game past their conference tournament.

I think we were playing really well at the end of the year and would have done some damage in the NCAA tournament.

It is all water under the bridge, but is is a shame that we did not get the opportunity to show what we could have done.

This tournament is displaying the mediocrity of college basketball coaches Conn is a very talented team but they have no NBA stars on the roster. Most will end up in Europe yet none of these esteemed coaches can come up with any strategy to compete.
They all seem to be limited to the Anderson “play tough and hit the boards hard” strategy

This is nonsense. What they have is four starters all of whom could become NBA players. It is true that none of them may be NBA all stars (although Castle could be) but not many teams can put four starters in the NBA and Newton, Castle, Clingan and Karaban could all play in the league.

Dick Vitale rule is you need two NBA players to win an NCAA title. They clearly have that
