TEMPLE TO BIG EAST

A10 is looking to replace Temple and also Charlotte whose football progam is upgrading to DIV 1. That would leave the league with 12 teams.

I've heard they're looking to go to 16. In addition to Butler and VCU there are rumors they're looking to add George Mason and Creighton.

__________

Re above remark about not being too certain Villanova would leave BE if they upgraded their fb progam and there was a split even if the fb schools decided not to take 'Nova I think it would be doubtful they remain in the BE as the only Div 1 fb program. They'd want to get into a league and any league that would want their fb program would most likely also want the bb program since it is and probably will continue to be more valuable than whatever fb program they can put together. Re the upgrade I still see Villanova as Louisville's replacement in BE fb. Louisville wants the Big XII. Went to the Big XII at the same time WV was being wooed by them asking to be admitted. Big XII is still hot to add Cardinals and the success they've had in this years NCAA bb tourney is just making Louisville that much more desireable.

I thought Navy was assured of league stability before making decision to join BE. If Cards waiting for a Big12 invite, I guess not.

When West Virginia was accepted to Big XII a scheduled news conference was delayed for a few days when Louisvill approached the Big XII and asked if either they could be admitted rather than WV. Big XII's problem, so they say, is they're not high on having an odd number of schools. Said to be favoring BYU with Cincinnati a possible fallback option.

The whole conference reorganization thing is still in a behind the scenes flux. There continues to be talk of the SEC wanting to take Clemson and Florida St from the ACC. If that were to happen the ACC would be looking to add two more schools and BE schools would be where they'd be looking - think Notre Dame, Rutgers, UCONN. Rutgers and UCONN along with BC, Syracuse would give the ACC a very nice foothold in the Northeast. ND comes in to play because there's a proposal being considered by the confernces to have at least 4 fb teams involved in a tournament to determine a fb national champion. Keys are 'at least' and 'confernce champions'. If that goes through in order to compete for the national title ND would have to give up their independence and join a league. Stranger things have happened but I've come across no one who thinks ND would join the BE football conference. I for one hope whatever changes are made that ND remains in the BE.

Oops! I'd better explain 'conference champions'. The proposal mentioned most would have the four conference champions with the highest raking at season's end to be the ones who would be selected to play in the fb tournament. Under this proposal no conference could have more than one team participate and, of course, no idndependent would be eligible.

There is probably nothing that can be done about it. Syracuse has a large alumni base in the NYC Metro area and MSG is looking to schedule events that will draw well. Didn't Duke play a "home" game in the Garden this year. Even if SJ had the ability to block them from playing at the Garden there's an arena opening in Brooklyn that would welcome them with open arms.

I just posted on another thread that we should all buy tickets to the Syracuse game at the Garden and root for Temple

No, that was University of Tokyo that you were thinking about. Mike Aresco recently became sweet on them. Tokyo's basketball program was canceled a few years back because of an academic scandal. However, football for the U of T has been on the upswing of late. They haven't made a bowl game in thirty-eight years, but they have made inroads in recruiting in Osaka to the south and Fukushima to the north. The future is very bright for them.
Mike Aresco thinks that the Big East should expand East as far as possible. Think of of TV contract possibilities! He's such a visionary. I can't wait for him to sew this whole thing up.
