Good for him!

Good for him. Whatever deficiencies he may have had in his game, he always left it all out there on the court for us. He was one of my favorite Johnnies the 2 years he played for us.

Tarik gave us all he had in his time here . But, he seemingly thought his role here should be different than the Coaches . Would he have helped this Year if he stayed ? Certainly . His shot blocking and ability to hit the mid range shot would have given us more points and opened things up for Simon and Heron and Figgy going to the hoop . He could draw out the Govans and Watson’s away from the basket . Disappointing he didn’t feel he could get enough PT here than at TTech . He’s playing about the same minutes . And ,with Keita hurt early in the Year , he might have easily gotten 25 or more minutes a game . If he could avoid the fouls . Wish him well but,.... he could have done the Team and School better . Mullin took a chance on him after Tennessee didn’t work out . That might have counted for a little more loyalty ?

I wish he stayed but I can't fault him. He graduated from the university and that's got to count for some level of appreciation for his contribution while here and decision to take his next steps elsewhere.

If he makes it at next level, I'll continue to root for him.

Owens averages 5 rebounds a game at 6’10. That is awful. Owens couldn’t stop anyone one-on-one last year. He got backed down like he was on ice skates.

He was/is a fantastic shot blocker and has awesome hustle. That’s it. He is not a cure for what ails this team.

Most posters are just wishing a good former member of the team well and applauding his being recognized as noted in first post. I recognize his rebounding limitations, but was sorry to see him go. I do believe he could have helped this year in light of Keita’s limitations, but it is water under bridge at this point. Mullin I heard did try to change his mind, personally meeting with him to no avail. What more can you ask?

I've heard from several informed people that the staff, including Mullin, did everything with reasonable bounds to keep him (i.e., they didn't promise his father he'd get to shoot 10 18 footers/3's every game). I think the kid wanted to stay but was influenced by his Dad. All good and I'm rooting for him. He's had a nice season for a really good team so I'm glad it worked out. But he's doing with Texas Tech exactly what he'd be doing here. Protecting the rim at an elite level, playing good D (though with limitations against bigger players) and competing his tail off. And I think we'd be just as good as Texas Tech if we had Owens and a healthy Keita to back him up.

Stats don’t tell the whole story. For a team that has zero inside presence, no size, no depth and often plays like it’s sleepwalking, having Tariq on the team would have made a HUGE difference this year. Having said that, Chris did all he could, but he couldn’t do nothing. He’s gone, and that’s that.

I vaguely remember saying he was a big loss, but people saying it's not because we have Keita.

I'm really surprised by this, had no idea he was having that good a season. Congrats to Tariq, we obviously could've used him this year.

Tariq's team has a huge game at home against Kansas tonight. They could easily wind up a 3 or 4 seed.

He left because he or his dad wanted more of an offensive role. He has not advanced this cause by leaving the program. Liked his hustle and effort. No loyalty from this kid after what happened at Tenn. if he stays we probably have 2 more wins. Him leaving hurt us. Can not root for or against him.

TT beat Kansas by 29 at home tonight. TO played very well. His stats may be approximately the same this year as they were for us last year but he looks like he has improved and also to be considered is he is on a very good team this year with many options as opposed to our rather poor team last year so it is harder to put up big numbers. (TT 22-5 ranked 14th).

RJG. Agree with you 100 percent ! Three different schools , no loyalty at all. He had one left of eligibility

Same stat line in about 20% less minutes so generally 25% more productive. But that likely comes from being on a team that is infinitely better than last year's roster. Wonder how much post season potential had to do with his decision. He transferred long before Heron so could have also been looking to play on a tourney contender as well as a change of scenery as well as a better usage rate. Wish him well.

I wish Tariq well, but he left us in the lurch.
He left for ‘greener pastures’ and it’s worked out well for him at TT.
That’s cool.
But he left us in the lurch following a direct appeal by Mullin to stay.
He lacks the loyalty gene.
So, I’m not a fan of the guy, but I wish him well as he pursues his pro dreams.
That said, I’d love for us to play and beat TT in the Dance—which might be a tall order, but man I’d luv it.

I kind of have mixed feelings about this CD. On one hand I hate the “I gotta do what’s best for me(and screw everyone else)” mentality ot a lot of youngsters. OTOH I don’t remember the timing of TO’s commitment to TT and where we stood personel wise. With TT he knew they’d likely be a top 20 team and he’d be dancing in March. With us it was going to be an uphill battle for sure. So I do sort of get it. When I was a kid, I played organized baseball for the 70th Pct team in Brooklyn. The team was comprised mostly of my buddies from Bushwick, even though the 70th Pct was in another part of Brklyn. Our best player by far was a kid named Frankie. He was one of our nieghborhood boys. When we played the Ty Cobb team-one of the top baseball programs in the city at the time- the coach of TC took notice of Frankie and poached him from us for the following season. As disappointed as we all were in Frankie, we knew how great the TC program was and how much of an opportunity it would be for Frankie. As an aside, Frankie turned out to be the MVP of that TC team the following year. A team which featured future SJU great Sebby Borrielo, amongst many other future D1 college players. Unfortunately Frankie got sidetracked with partying, etc, played 2 seasons with TC and was done with baseball by the time he was 17. What a waste of talent, but that’s an old story sadly.

When you are a transfer based program you have to be ok with transfers out regardless of the circumstances.
