Hopefully Justin Cole has started the Molloy pipeline.

Can you elaborate Andrew the Second for the uninitiated/uninformed ( me)
Thanks

There are two very talented underclassmen at Molloy that are St. John's targets. Ironically, one of them is Cole Anthony, the son of a former Knicks guard. He is a class of 2019 and in the very distant horizon. Ironic because both justin Cole and Cole Anthony share Cole.
As for a Molloy pipeline, there wasn't one when Jack Curran, who was an alum was there, and I don't expect one to start now. Over the past 40 years we may have gotten 3 or 4 outstanding players from Molloy and they have good teams almost every year.
For many kids playing basketball in Queens St. John's is just TOO CLOSE to home unfortunately.

'72 I agree with 95% of what you said. However, the TOO CLOSE to home is only part of that story. I can tell you first hand, that Jack Curran was not exactly on the SJU bandwagon even though he was an Alum. It is an old story but Curran harbored some anti Lou sentiment as he thought he was in line for SJU gig should Louie ever leave. When that didn't happen, let's just say SJU wasn't #1 on the list to funnel players. Remember that Lou (St. Ann's- precursor to Molloy) and Curran were both Stanners. I can tell you I never saw Coach Lou at Molloy in the 80's. I did see a lot of other head coaches there as Molloy had some decent recruits during that time, most notably Kenny Smith. Maybe things smoothed out later but the late Coach Curran did let's just say hold grudges.
Curran probably wast happy when Billy Clarke attended SJ, didn't play well and, as a result, didn't get much PT. Subsequently transferred to Rutgers

I agree that there was some problem(s) between Curran and SJU, but we did get some of his players. In no particular order:Rudy Bogad, Billy Lawrence, Hank Cluess, Kevin Cluess, Kevin Raftery, Rob Werdann and Clarke come to mind. Is there any other school that sent more players to SJU? He sure sent a number of his best to play for Frank McGuire.
Did Curran want the job after Louie and Kresse left for the Nets? The job didn't pay much back then. I know Bill O'Meara turned down the Fordham job in the seventies. It would have been interesting to see what Curran would have done at the college level.

We may have gotten more from CTK. Jayson, Beckett, Barckley(granted he went prep), Omar, Boothe, number of walk ons, etc.

Coach Lou was coach at Molloy for one year. When he left, he "passed" job to Curran and moved to SJU. When Lou decided to go to NBA I believe he took Kresse with him. Frank Mulzoff (former player and assistant) became SJU coach. My understanding was Curran thought/wanted either consideration for SJU or NBA assistant role. Didn't happen. Some of this is before my time, but I know Curran was lukewarm on SJU. The players that went to SJU were more when it benefitted Curran. Curran was old school and back then he had a major influence on who went where. He in essence was a broker and wanted to get his players scholarships on his terms.

I can also mention that Curran had his own basketball camp (not unusual) and in the years I attended I can tell you I never saw one SJU coach, or player at the camp. Yet I do remember, Digger Phelps, Gordon Chiesa (Manhattan), Tom Penders (Fordham), Rollie Massimino (Nova), Pete Carril (Princeton) all giving coach tips at camp. Various college players and Molloy's varsity players were counselors. Now, Coach Lou did have the Carnesseca/Sarachek (sp?) camp so maybe that was just a competition thing.

The famous Curran quote was that " Stanners (Molloy guys especially Kenny Anderson) don't go to St. Johns and Jack always did his best to e,nforce it. Rob Werdann finally broke the schneid but was overall a bit disappointing. takinga a fulll season off with a. strained calf. That probably pleased Curran to the max. Saw him at many games but rarely in Lou's company.A real old school vendetta all the way. with Lou the classier of the two.

Rob Werdann was a good player for us.

One way to look at it Andrew:
would we take Robert Werdann for today's team?
Absolutely!
Would we be better for it?
Absolutely!
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, blessings for whatever your beliefs.
We are fortunate to be in America.
We are fortunate to have the Red Storm to follow!

All the best and
Tidings of comfort and joy.
SS& G :)

As per usual I'm confused Lou graduated in 1950? and join the SJU staff in 1957-58or was it 1958-59 I think Lou was at St. Ann longer then a year. Jack problems with Lou or Lou's with Jack being caused a recommendation for head coaching job seems unlikely you have to remember Joe Lapchick did not hire Lou as his assistant. In those days it seems that the AD made those decisions

Maybe he wanted the job instead of Mulzoff

There wasn't much difference in the demeanor of Curran and Mulzoff. There was a tacit agreement among St. John's, Mulzoff and Carnesecca that should Louie want to return to St. John's that Mulzoff would step down. Curran would not have accepted that arrangement too graciously. Hence, there was a 40 year lukewarm relationship with Curran, Molloy and St. John's.
