Syracuse Game

I think Jakarr is going to have a monster game.

Cuse had no answers for him up at the Carrier Dome last year and his high post offense is the perfect medicine against their zone.

Cuse's bigs haven't develop and they don't even utilize them on offense.

We need to stick to Cooney like glue and see if Dom can stay on the floor not picking up fouls because we'll need him late game vs. Fair.

We're winning this one. This isn't the Cuse of old with veteran guards that can kill us and Boeheim and his fans know this.

Get ready to celebrate fellas. Whip Cuse, crack the Top 25 and move on from there.

I thought Coleman looked exceptional on offense in the very little I've seen him. He just gets up and down so slow and I hope Coach Lavin has his team thinking 5-4, 4-3 all night when he's in the game. If they are going to crash the offensive glass, you make them pay with secondary transition. Sanchez/Dom to a guard and either back to them or to someone streaking to the rim. If Fair or Christmas hits the offensive glass, there could be plenty of 4-2s with Coleman in the game.

I prefer Sanchez at the FT line because I think Sampson could do more damage on the baseline...and Sanchez is a better passer and a threat to take a few dribbles to pull the center up and the wings in. It'd be nice to see Hooper and Harrison camping out on the wings with Sampson running the baseline Sanchez at the FT line. Pick your poison.

They got a good team and it wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t a good tournament team at the end of the year.”

Slick Jim with the double negative insult. :)

He also said Sampson could be a lottery pick which is a very rat-like maneuver for a coach that knows he will be playing St. John's the next few years. Throw some gasoline on the jumping to the NBA fire. These kids don't need much of a push with dozens of agents promising them millions. He knows a full STJU squad next year could beat them by 20 if they lose Grant.

If I am Lavin I would respond with "Syracuse has two guaranteed first rounders, IMO, if they come out in Ennis and Grant. I'd pick Ennis in the top 10 and Grant is the best sophomore I've seen since Baron Davis."

Seth Davis' kiss of death? Picks SJU by 63-60.

Syracuse at St. John's
I'm not quite sure why teams with this many athletes are playing so slow. According to kenpom.com, St. John's is ranked 274th in the country in tempo; Syracuse is 311th. It will be hard for the Johnnies to quicken the pace given that Syracuse freshman point guard Tyler Ennis boasts an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 5 to 1, but I have a feeling Steve Lavin's bunch is going to play with real purpose against an Orange squad that is due to get clipped. The bottom line is this: If you want to play in the NCAA tournament, this is a game you have to win.

His last sentence is misguided and wrong. If we lose this game our chances of making the NCAA tournament are not gone.

I doubt he meant it that literally Jack. Instead I think he was referencing the general idea that if SJU wants to take that next step, these are the kind of games they need to start winning or at least be very competitive in. And he's spot on in that respect. Not beating the #2 team in the country in a close one is understandable. Another 20+ point loss where we look overmatched would be difficult to accept at this point. I don't expect that to be the case Sunday, but it's a reality if it does happen.

I'm also just glad someone is pointing out the confusing pace of our play (and I guess Cuse has a similar thing going). I think we are more suited to run than they are, and should speed this game up on them. 2nd half Wisco, 2nd half GT, Fordham game pace is where we need to be. Keep their bigs running rim to rim and don't let them set the zone and turn us into a half-court jump shooting team.

Syracuse is driven by the success of its zone. For the zone to be at its best you need a ton of long athletes. Syracuse had that last year with a a 6'7 PG, a 6'3 combo guard that started for four years and knew where to be before anyone else, a pair of 6'8 combo forwards, and a host of other longer athletles like Christmas, Grant, Keita, etc.

This year they are a mix of styles. Coleman, Cooney, and Ennis are not MCW and Southerland. They are not quick/long players.

Jim Boeheim has followed this St. John’s team and believes they have what it takes to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

“I absolutely think they’re going to be a tournament team,” the Syracuse coach told SNY.tv in advance of Sunday’s game between No. 2 Syracuse and St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. “They’ve got good inside presence. They’ve got really good guard play. They don’t really have a weakness.

They got a good team and it wouldn’t surprise me if they weren’t a good tournament team at the end of the year.”

The unbeaten Orange (9-0) and the Red Storm (6-2) no longer share the Big East Conference, but that hasn’t stopped Boeheim from watching their core group progress.
“St. Johns has got more good players than most [teams],” Boeheim said. “When you look at their team they got a lottery pick, I think [JaKarr] Sampson could be. They got a guard as good as anybody, [D'Angelo] Harrison. [Chris] Obekpa [is] the best shot-blocker in the country. And these other guys are good, too.”

After whipping up on Fordham by the count of 104-58 last Saturday at the Garden, a few St. John’s fans began chanting, “We want ‘Cuse.”

Now they get their wish.

“It’s a great opportunity since they are the No. 2 team in the country,” St. John’s junior guard Phil Greene IV said. “If we win, it will be good for our resume for the NCAA Tournament. It would be a big win for the University so I can’t wait. Sunday will be a great game. We are going to let our play do the talking.”

The Johnnies last made the NCAAs in 2011, but coach Steve Lavin was using Norm Roberts’ players during that season.

Now, Lavin has a roster comprised entirely of his players and there are high expectations for the Johnnies this March.

“They’ve been pumping these guys for a couple years now and I think they’re very talented kids who have gotten mature and are just much more understanding of the college game,” Boeheim said. “They’re much more experienced players and they’re playing with a lot of confidence now.”

The two teams will play next year at the Carrier Dome, but Boeheim said he expected the two teams to continue their rivalry beyond that.

“Yeah, I would think so,” he said. “We’re playing them for two years and I don’t see any reason we won’t continue to play.”

BRISCOE TO ATTEND GAME

Isaiah Briscoe was invited by St. John’s to attend the game.

The 2015 Roselle (N.J.) Catholic guard is being recruited by both schools, as well as Arizona, Florida, Seton Hall, Rutgers and others.

“The coaching staff is real,” Briscoe told SNY.tv after visiting St. John’s for Midnight Madness in October. “They don’t just tell you what you want to hear. And with them, everything isn’t about basketball.”

Boeheim has always been gracious towards us, at least off the court. Now, it would be great on Sunday when an SJU win actually causes him to believe what he said.

I completely agree with this. Sanchez is an outstanding passer, and his jumper seems to have a nice touch. I would run a high-low with him and Jakarr and put Jakarr down on the baseline. He has no back-to-the-basket game, but if he runs the baseline Sanchez can get him the ball to do what he does well. Plus it would put him someplace that he won't be jacking up 3s.

Getting the ball to the free-throw line is a key against the Syracuse zone. Sanchez would present a nice target there and could dish to Sampson for dunks when the zone big comes up, or shoot a free throw if he doesn't. And if a guard collapses then the guards plus Max have to be able to hit some 3s to keep them honest.

Hope the staff has the same idea and can get them to execute. If they do they have a chance. The pieces ought to be there to compete.

Game thread on 26 pages and the game is on Sunday...

Next time we will call it pre-game thread

I'm not criticizing it I'm just in shock at how many posts there are. It has already surpassed the Fordham thread and the game hasn't even happened yet! Just shows how seriously our fan base takes this game I hope our team takes it just as seriously
Hopefully there will be very few posts during the game as everyone will be at the garden screaming their lungs out!

Reports of a snowstorm (I guess there isn't any difference between NYC and Syracuse afterall) are could impact the attendance. If that is the case, let's hope those buses coming from Syracuse can't get out of the garage.

Redmen.com's very own Weathermannyc thinks this storm could have big bust potential for us on the island although he has been off from work this week.

And if he's wrong he's buying you and me beers at the garden :)

I am heading up with one of my sons tomorrow. I am looking forward to Sunday very much. Is Stout the place to go beforehand...or after?

GL send me your cell again and if Im over the flu I'll meet you for a beer after. We usually go to a place right nest to the garden

yeah. bronx pale ale.:) But John-Weatherman doesn't drink during games unless we are losing by a lot. Alfredo and I don't live by that rule thank god. But unless I get my temperature back comfortably under 100 degrees it's water only for me on sunday

Going back to work today was a dumb thing to do
