Syracuse Game

I also think Branch should start in the big picture, but this is one game where Phil's skillset could really be highlighted. He doesn't turn the ball over (and Cuse forces a ton of turnovers) and is a better 3PT shooter than Branch, at least in terms of being able to get on a streak.

I agree with you to the extent that Green doesn't turn the ball over, but disagree with the entire notion that he and Branch are interchangeable. I don't want to see Branch playing 2 and I don't want to see Green running the offense. Branch is a PG who'd be my 4th option at 2. Green is a 2G that should be backup for Harrison or part of a 3 guard with Jordan Harrison Green or even Branch Harrison Green.

Normally I would say it doesn't matter who starts a game, it's who finishes it--but this game it's very important we get off to a quick start. We can't fall behind a quality team.

Completely agreed. I didn't mean to insinuate that Branch and Greene are interchangeable. To the contrary and as you alluded to, of the 4 guards Branch would be my 4th choice at SG and Greene would be my fourth choice at PG. I was just saying in this particular game I think what Greene brings offensively (conservative, steady style; doesn't take a lot of chances, good ball protection; can get and make shots at 17-20 feet, especially when he gets going) could be particularly important for us in comparison to other games.

I see the merit in what you're saying, and I think for those reasons Phil's scoring could be a key component off the bench in a 6th man role. I think we need a lot of Branch because we'll break the zone with penetration in the gaps and good ball movement. That's where Jamal excels. As good as Phil can be when he's on a hot streak - I don't think we're in this game if we're trying to shoot over them. I know that's one way to do it, but I don't think that's a good recipe for us.

But I don't want to diminish Phil's potential impact. Could be big.
I'm just firmly on the Jamal branch bandwagon and want to see him get big minutes.

I can't keep counting down the days to this game. Three more days. Wake up and the game is at 12. Will be in Section 104.

Victory and the beers will be flowing after the game. Loss and it's going to be right to penn for the ride home. Cant bear to drink anywhere where syracuse fans will be

Both have been playing well and I don't mean to knock either one of them. What I am saying is that this enlightened notion that guards are interchangeable has been a big failure for us. We look completely discombobulated when Green is running the offense. It is not his game and forcing that issue has been a big failure. No other way to view it.

Both Branch and Jordan have been playing better of late, so I don't Phil at the 1 needs to be an issue at this point. We have 4 solid guards. The key will be controlling Ennis and scoring/rebounding inside. The key spots will be penetrating past the out side defenders for the mid-range jumper and getting the ball into the high post with a look for cutters on the baseline. I don't fear the Syracuse bigs as much as I fear the wings and guards. We need to beat them inside.

(Watch their bigs have a monster game just to reaffirm that I don't have a clue)

Speccing out the court at @TheGarden for Sunday's #SJUBB matchup vs. No. 2/3 Syracuse. pic.twitter.com/hhfwZjJkhk

@StJohnsBBall just posted a picture of the MSG court specs for Sunday. I find it pathetic that they are not chaining the the knicks orange to red on the "paint" area of the court.

they never have, only the center and baseline decals

I think Hooper and Jordan play an important part if coach uses them and if Jordan .beats their guards gets into the creases on their zone starts to hit. that 15 foot jumper or dishes to harrisson and Hooper Need to continue good foul shooting Really want to win but if we can be very competitive that would say a lot for the progress of the program

We are going to have to take care of the ball so Syracuse doesn't get out in transition for easy buckets, we also need to hit threes. Teams don't pull upsets against top five opponents without the three ball, and we need at least 6+ threes Sunday. We also have to limit Syracuse to one shot, if they start getting offensive rebounds like crazy we are going to have a problem on our hands.

We can win this game Syracuse is a great team but not as great as they think they are. Hopefully they overlook this game with Villanova coming up soon on their schedule, and we take advantage. It will be interesting to see how we attack that 2-3 zone, and even if we take a loss, if we execute well offensively that will be an encouraging sign for the rest of the season.

Sunday we should get an overall better look at what this team is this year, what they are capable of accomplishing, and whether or not they are ready for he spotlight and national rankings. Because so far this season has been a head scratcher as to what this team is and how good they are. You have games like the Penn State where we played sub par basketball and took a loss to a middle to lower of the pack Big Ten team. Then we look dreadful in the first half of GTECH game, only to come out and out score them by twenty in the second half. Then you have games like Longwood and Monmouth where we won but looked average maybe slightly below average in the win. Then you have last Sunday, where we blew out Fordham and scored over 100 points for the first time in god knows how long.

What I'm trying to say is this season has been full of ups and downs even though we've only being playing for roughly a month. It is time to see what this team is made of, a win, or even a loss where we compete he whole way, could prove this team is ready for success and that success is reasonable NOW. But a blowout loss like the one we experienced last year and the year before, could show this team is maybe not ready to do big things just yet.

If we do get blown out, I'm not saying this season is over and we can't turn it around and make the NCAA's, what I'm saying is if we get blown it just shows that this team needs go back and work at some things and maybe be ready to be dangerous by Feb as Lavin said. But a win could show this team is a top 25 caliber team and a force to be reckoned with in the Big East now. Should be fun to watch, and let's go Johnnies.

Agreed on this. I think a lack of defined roles (especially positionally) was a big part of what was causing our uneven play earlier in the season. It's starting to take shape (the front court rotation in particular), but you can still see at times when 2 of Jordan/Greene/Branch are in together some hesitation as to who is doing what out there. Nice to have versatile players who can do a lot of different things when needed, but Jordan and Branch should be at point and Harrison and Greene should be off the ball.

Game thread on 26 pages and the game is on Sunday...

Next time we will call it pre-game thread

I'm not criticizing it I'm just in shock at how many posts there are. It has already surpassed the Fordham thread and the game hasn't even happened yet! Just shows how seriously our fan base takes this game I hope our team takes it just as seriously

Fan base? It's a dozen of us talking to each other ;)

I'm in 104 also, hope it's RED not orange.

I'm in 104 as well. Saw the rest of my row was on SubHub though so I'm not too optimistic.

I just checked StubHub prices in that section are 100 and above. Pretty hot ticket that's double face.
