Syracuse Game Thread

I have to say I'm disappointed there was no IllWill posts on the last 6 pages of this thread. lol

What is there to say? The team, the fans, St. John's as a whole was a complete embarassment today.

Watching Pointer and Garrett on the court today almost made me puke. These kids have no offensive game.

William, being the marketing guru, what would you do to improve our image against the #2 team in America playing on their second home court?

Reverse the records for these teams Mr. L and if SJ was 20-1, ranked # 2 in the country, the SJ faithful would have been the majority at MSG. The Orange would have still had had 5,000 fans there if they were 10-12 and unranked but the two teams circumstances are complete opposite right now.

That the Cuse had 12,000 fans there should surprise no one. When we were ahead in the game in the first 5 minutes the Orange crowd was not very boisterous even in their large numbers. Had we been ahead in the last minute and won the crowd would have sounded much more in favor of SJ. When a team is down 25 points, even if Cuse had only 5,000 fans there it would have sounded like they had 15,000.

Winning solves all the problems at MSG. We need to add three starters to this team. Then we will be able to beat any team in America IMO.

I dont care what our record is (well, i do...) we should have had more than 5,000 fans there. And yes, I was there and the split was probably 13,000 cuse fans to our 5,000. It was embarassing...well, at least I was embarassed to see all that Orange around the building.

And to lose by 30 points on your "home court" to anyone is embarassing. For some it may be easy to just think that all our guys will improve enough to contribute to a sweet-16 calibur team, but watching dom and amir play really drives me nuts. I know it's only been half a season, but I see no improvements in their offensive play. If they are not putting back missed shots they can't score. They look like they can be nice glue guys down the road, playing tough defense, rebounding alittle a scoring a little but, but even at this stage of their careers i thought i'd see more from top 100, and in dom's case top 50 recruit(s).

Just a couple of things Ill Bill, we did not lose by 30 as you know and neither Amir nor Sir Dom were ever intended to be starters. They get a freshman hall pass from me.
Pointer starts because Sampson was bounced by the NCAA. Amir starts as a gimmick IMO to impress Obekpa that the starting 5 slot is his and waiting. Let's hope the gimmick works.

Pointer was our highest ranked player.

illwill, if you really don't think that Amir Garrett has improved in our offensive system since his first game here, you really must not be watching hard enough.

Whoever rated him as that has some serious explaining to do, IMO.

Notice that, whenever he starts bringing the ball towards the rim, the defense basically backs off, and let's him screw the play up on his own. 90% of the time, that strategy works.

I would not be at all surprised to see Sir Dom mature into a Lavor Postell type force.

Maybe, but at this point, he's no further along on offense now, then he was at the start of the season. That, in and of itself, has been dissapointing.

Postell wasn't particularly further along in the latter stages of his freshmen year (from an offensive standpoint), either.

Give it time.

We weren't asking him to do as much as we are Pointer, though.

Again, not saying Pointer can't improve significantly. It's just, at this point, I'm dissapointed in his offensive game, and I'd REALLY like to know what that one service saw in making him our highest-rated recruit.

I think the team is better off starting GodsGift and letting SirDom come off the bench as a quick spark and a change to a faster run and gun offense. Dom right now is our fifth option on offense and we can use Gift's height and scoring around the basket like the Depaul game.

Well, Pointer's job is actually much harder than Postell's considering he's being asked to do more. Not to mention, Postell started every game his freshmen season and averaged nearly 26 minutes per outing.

He just wasn't particularly a good offensive player during his freshmen campaign. His offensive game started to come around during the early-to-mid point of his sophomore season.

Maybe, Pointer will show you why he was rated highly (by one recruiting outlet) next season. Some kids are better being smoothed into a role, instead of being thrust into it.

FWIW each of Harkless, Harrison and Pelle were ranked higher than Dom by only 1 of the 5 rankings used to calculate the RSCI top 100. It wasn't just one poll that had Dom ranked so high. Every one of them had Dom ranked 44th or better. That said if you read what they were saying about Dom last year his rankings were based on being one of the top defensive players in the class as well as due to his superior athleticism, much like the NBA some of these rankings will put guys in positions due to potential.

Dom was not a shooter nor a ball handler coming out of HS and it will take time for those elements of his game to develop.

I agree it will take some time for his offense to catch up with his defense but there is a snowball's chance in hell he will start next year if we land some bigger guys up front who also can score and handle the ball like Sanchez and Shepard. That may change his longevity at SJ because many kids cannot handle being relegated to 7th or 8th man. I hope I am wrong but unless his handle and jumper improve radically by next November he will be further down on the bench than most of us expected. These numbers in the Syracuse game were atrocious and that is being kind since his defense was just as bad:(
Sir'Dominic Pointer, G-F 31 0-7 0-1 0-0 0 0 1 3 2 0 3 0

Sir Dom with foul line pull up jumper and quick turn around j off boards opens up a lot of things for this offense.

A shot takes a while to develop Take the amt of games he has played and total shots he has taken It doe not amt to many. As a freshmen even at practice he is not just shooting jumpers His improvement will come over the summer if he works at it He has the talent to be a special player

Pointer is the same size as Felipe. He doesn't rebound as well but his defense is much better. He has more conscience shooting than Felipe and that's OK by me. Hopefully he'll develop some moves as the years go on.

Dom has more conscience than Felipe?? Since when does a protestant player have more conscience than a Catholis player? And what does that have to do with shooting? I suggest you check Felipe's scoring record back in the day.
Dom has the moves now....they are called dunks and layups. He has a lot of work to do developing a consistent shooting form. That will come in practices. He will get a lot of that next season and seasons going forward because that is where most of his minutes will be spent if they land the 6'8 or 6'9 players that will replace him.
He was meant to be a defensive stopper off the bench and that is what he hopefully will become in big games such as Syracuse.....unfortunately he could not stop anyone in that game and did not get his complimentary dunk or layup off the Syracuse zone.

IMO, you guys are nuts; Pointer is a winning player and will see significant minutes regardless of who we recruit. You don't need all scorers to win, you need a team.
