Syracuse Game Thread

Dom and Amir have a long way to go offensively. They both threw up some bad looking garbage today. Just ugly stuff. They need to get back to basics.

Those two will always be energy guys who brings it every night on both ends. The thing is we might not be able to count on them to be offensive threats until their junior years. Otherwise, expect junk buckets and an occasional made jumper from the outside. I can see them forcing turnovers once we're able to truly play our game with more sufficient bodies.

I agree, that's what concerns about next year. I don't think you can count on either to be a reliable 3rd option. We need more scoring on the nights Mo and D'Angelo don't have it. I like the signs I'm seeing from Greene. He's shooting it with more confidence and is being more aggressive. Need some more punch next year in addition to the obvious bigs.

I'm sure Dom will improve. He's just got to put the work in. Amir I'm less optim istic about seeing improvement. Lets face it, the only way you really improve is by putting in the work in the summer and getting repitition. Amir isn't even gooing to be around this summer because of baseball, so when exactly is he going to work on his game? He'll come back to campus next fall and probably have the same flaws. Can never ever question his hustle and grit though.

I also like how Greene is coming around. I think he can be counted on as a viable option after Moe and Harrison. We probably can count on Branch, as well. We may be able to count on a couple of kids from the class of 2012 (depending on who we bring in).

If we have 3 or 4 guys we can count on to score then I don't mind Amir being that 5th option on the floor. His weaknesses are more visible now due to our current situation. He's probably also logging more minutes then he would generally see.

It'd be nice for either one of them to work on their jumpshot BIG TIME this offseason though.

I mentioned this awhile ago, Pointer reminds me so much of Willie Glass. Freshman year glass couldn't hit anything except dunks. I remember him practicing shooting with a bottle cap on his hand. By his senior year he was one of the better 3 pt shooters on the team. Pointer will improve with off season practice. Just give him time to develope his jumper.

With what Greene has done and Branch coming in, Garrett will almost always be the fifth option next year no matter the rotation on the court.

It really shows how thin they are right now but also how talented they are and how bright the future can be.

Not much to cheer about today but the thaught of the future. In all probability everyone returns and we add some missing pieces. D LO looked great again and Phil is improving. We are to small and thin to compete w Syracuse.

i hate syracuse as much as the next guy but lets be fair...they no longer employ the guy who was ALLEDGED to be a molester by questionable sources, and the lauri fine stuff is a 15 year old rumor brought out by gloria allred.....makes us sound pretty pathetic as fans if that is all we can muster....and as for their city?....much of the state probably thinks the armpit is down here...im sure ill get killed for this post but it just seems classless to play that card

Get lost...go back to your own board..this is a St. John's board..nobody cares what you think

If you think boeheim didn't know, then your clueless

Pretty ironic you hate syracuse, but your first post is after Syracuse beats St. John's...who you think you are fooling here..your as annoying as the former Syracuse grad that annouced the game today.

And once again take a hike

I still enjoy watching this team, never giving up regardless of the blowout. Can't beat the great experience these kids are getting. Don't like our 1 for 2 foul shots lately.
According to the announcers, Cuse has been shooting three's in the 20's percentile. I have to figure these figures were against man to man defense. Obviously, they had wide open shots against our zone. Got to believe these guys should end up in the final four. Like I said yesterday they will be our toughest team we will face this year.

This was damned close to an unwinnable game for us. Teams with a much bigger athletic front line are going to give us fits, and SU also has terrific guards. I also like the way tey play defense. This is a very very good SU team, even by their standards.

Couldn't we at least knock one Cuse player on his ass? C'mon.

Agree completely, there was one point in the game where their guys were dunking on us left and right and flailing their arms in jubilation where I turned to my friend and said, I hope that someone has the balls to lay someone out down there.

Another 0 rebound game for Pointer to go along with his 0 points. Garrett has just blown by him on the depth chart.

Unwatchable. Like children playing against men. Jv squad vs varisty squad. Man, Lavin has his work cut out for him. I am telling you Keady is asking Lavin - you really wanted this? They like to drink together and I can see Keady saying to Steve " you are a crazy sob". These games remind me how far and for how long this program has fallen..

Another SJU alumni who reports to me is a SU fan.. U believe .. Ain't a great career move him... ;-)

Hopefully we be competitive again soon!

If we had two solid big guys, this game is a different story. We're missing 5 or 6 scholarship players, particularly big guys. The big difference today was size. We're not as far off as you think.

You've been praying for change and it is coming.
I appreciate your analogies above but why didn't you just say "like freshmen playing the varsity"???
There are 3 Syracuse players that are projected in the 2 rounds of the NBA draft. Out of a half dozen mock drafts, Moe appears in one of them....in the 2nd round.
I am going out on a limb here and will say that whatever team DU has next year St. John's will beat them.....at the Dome.

I have to say I'm disappointed there was no IllWill posts on the last 6 pages of this thread. lol

What is there to say? The team, the fans, St. John's as a whole was a complete embarassment today.

Watching Pointer and Garrett on the court today almost made me puke. These kids have no offensive game.

William, being the marketing guru, what would you do to improve our image against the #2 team in America playing on their second home court?

Reverse the records for these teams Mr. L and if SJ was 20-1, ranked # 2 in the country, the SJ faithful would have been the majority at MSG. The Orange would have still had had 5,000 fans there if they were 10-12 and unranked but the two teams circumstances are complete opposite right now.

That the Cuse had 12,000 fans there should surprise no one. When we were ahead in the game in the first 5 minutes the Orange crowd was not very boisterous even in their large numbers. Had we been ahead in the last minute and won the crowd would have sounded much more in favor of SJ. When a team is down 25 points, even if Cuse had only 5,000 fans there it would have sounded like they had 15,000.

Winning solves all the problems at MSG. We need to add three starters to this team. Then we will be able to beat any team in America IMO.

Amir wasn't always starting at Findley. He's a defensive glue guy with good athleticism and a limited offensive game. Don't see that changing with baseball getting in the way.

2 starters. We already have Branch for the1. If we can get a 4star 4+5, we could move Mo to the 3 and will be rocking. Although none are a true 5. 2 out of Gathers,Sampson and Obekpa ought to do the job.

Sat in the student section for this game. A few non-game related things:

1) WHY does St. John's allow MSG to sell SYRACUSE gear inside the team stores??? If I'm correct, doesn't St. John's rent out MSG for these games?? Shouldn't they have a say as to what gear is/isnt sold in the store?? COMPLETELY boggles the mind.

2) The ushers at MSG really are as bad as the students have said. They took away signs making fun of Syracuse going to the ACC, saying it was too profane/controversial when it was neither. A complete disgrace. Later that night I went to the Iona vs. Manhattan game at Manhattan. Students there chanted "F*&^ Iona" all game. A number of them in the first row also had foam fingers and made masturbating hand gestures with them. Society didn't crumble and the school didn't fall in the US News college rankings. MSG and St. John's needs to loosen up.
